Cemetery Saturday! My local chapter of the Association of Gravestone Studies had its meeting at the Shrewsbury Historical Society building this morning. Afterwards we wandered around Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, MA. Located just behind the Congregational Church, the first know burials took place there soon after Shrewsbury was founded in 1727. It has seen continuous use since then and is still owned and maintained by the town. There are gravestones by many carvers there, and it makes for a lovely stroll! The most famous grave there is that of General Artemis Ward, the leader of the Massachusetts militia companies during the first few weeks of the Revolutionary War. The Great War. The person buried here died shortly before their 22nd birthday. Most of their tomb slab wasn't very legible anymore, but the fact that this grave still exists probably means they have living relatives who to some extent care. War - every war, everywhere - causes so much trauma. Personal trauma, firstly, but also intergenerational trauma. PTSD can literally change parts of the DNA (epigenetic changes) and be passed on through the generations. On my final day in Arlington, I went to the National Cemetery, especially to visit Alexander Augusta, the first licensed Black medical doctor practising in Canada. After being refused entry to segregated American schools, Augusta was accepted to Toronto's Trinity College for medical school. He returned to the US as a Union Army surgeon in 1863. I first learned about him from @dr.mcknight.fashion, who was researching women's labour and had discovered his wife Mary, who was one of only a very few Black women business owners in Toronto in the 1850s. “Mary Fitz Randolph ‘Randy’ Hobler died May 26, 2017, at the age of 94. She was a resident of Princeton, NJ, from 1945 until she moved to Stonebridge in Skillman, NJ, in 2004. She was co-author with Jeanne Silvester of “Princeton Trivia,” “On the Streets Where We Live,” and “The Present Day Club 100th Anniversary History.” She also wrote “On the Streets Where We Live Revisited” in 2003, a history of the Professional Roster, and many other historical articles. Mrs. Hobler, born in 1922, was raised in Bronxville, NY, the daughter of Howard and Mollie Fitz Randolph. She also lived in La Jolla, CA, for 10 years. Randy married Herbert W. Hobler (also raised in Bronxville) in 1944, when he was serving in the Army Air Corps. After the war, they settled in Princeton and raised four children. While her children were in elementary school, Randy volunteered at the YMCA, and when her husband founded the Princeton radio station Nassau Broadcasting Company (WHWH), she joined him there for 10 years as assistant treasurer of the board. In the 1970’s, she pursued a master’s degree in counseling at Rider University, graduating in 1975. i’ve meditated often on why i love old graveyards so much. it’s not because i’m overly dark, or fascinated by the morbid and macabre. those aspects are cool, but my reasons are more about peace and humanity. there’s a certain calm about confronting mortality. it tends to shatter any pretensions you might hold about who you are and what really matters in your life. when you face mortality that’s hundreds of years old, when you read the names of people who lived full lives and died without ever making headlines, it throws the bigger picture of existence on this planet and in our society into sharp focus. it’s also kind of bittersweet to honor the lives of those long gone by memorializing them either photographically or just in your mind’s eye. encountering a long forgotten stone in an overgrown plot and still being able to read the name carved there brings that person to the fore once again, and in a small way confers on them the immortality that eluded them in the material world.
