Eightball & MJG’s third album is my favorite project from the Memphis duo. On Top Of The World was released in 1995 on Suave House Records. The production (by T-Mix) is more polished and you have features from outside the Suave House camp like E-40, Big Mike and Mac Mall. On this album, it’s more than just gangsta rap. Eightball & MJG discussed about more serious subjects like cocaine abuse on Funk Mission, bad relations with cops on In The Line Of Duty and trying to be legit instead of doing illegal things on What Can I Do. They also keep their signature pimp rap on their legendary cut Space Age Pimpin’ which is a laid back and smooth as silk track. Early Suave House Records projects released in the 90’s were some gems. Piece Of Mind, the first album from Tela released in 1996 makes no exception. You have that classic early Suave House sound with Slicse Tee and T. Mix as producers. You also have Jazze Pha who produced Sho Nuff and Tired Of Ballin. A bit different from most Memphis rappers, Tela stay away from the crunk sound and elbow throwin’ music. From the neighborhood candy lady, that one person everyone knows that makes a living from doing yard work and similar jobs, and even the young kids in the hood coming up with business plans about how they can to make a dollar. Tony Draper was the epitome of that. Launching Suave House Records at just 16 years old. Coming up with Big Mike and once working together at Olive Garden, it was always his plan to run his own business. It was when he was in the car with Big Mike after recieving his demo that Tony suggested getting in the studio to record more songs. Passing the demo to John Bido, who was a producer for RapALot, it would spark the relationship between the two labels. Being from Memphis, raised in Houston, he understood how to market his product. And with that mindset he would take the label to bigger levels than just locally. Before instagram and social media you had to actually be out in the streets pushing your product, building relationships and finding the right hands to place your music in. This is how Chicago became Suave’s House biggest market to date, because Tony would travel there and get his music in the hands of Rapmaster Pinkhouse, who had a voice in the music scene in the city. After taking a liking into Tony Draper, this would lead to 8ball and MJG’s first albums being exposed to a wider audience than just the comfortable southern regions and the rest is history. #TonyDraper #SuaveHouse

Toni Hickman, Tela & Tony Draper (Behind, Center) alongside with others at her birthday celebration in 1997. New Orleans, Louisiana. As Tony Draper was making his way in the industry with Suave House Records with 8ball and MJG being the center piece leading the charge of the label the supporting cast of Suave House Records helped contribute to the success and reputation of the label. One of the signees would be the female duo named NOLA which featured Toni Hickman. Before being signed, the duo was in NY working out a deal with Jive Records which didn’t come through because they decided to sign the duo the Ghetto Twiinz who were also from New Orleans & who Jive Records said was seen as more marketable. Being in talks with Suave House Records before for a deal to do their demo tracks, it sparked a call from Tony Draper once he learned the deal with Jive didn’t fall through. He then told the duo to rap over the phone on three way. Impressed with what he heard he flew them out to officially be apart of the label. Getting familiar with the Suave House roster, some of the first people Toni got acquainted with was Sugar from the female duo Nuckle Headz, 8Ball & MJG, T Mix and was welcomed by the rest of the roster. She immediately got to work and was first featured on the hook of Tela’s song “Welcome To The Suave House” which was followed by the duo being on the Suave House compilation with their biggest song “Trapped” and a feature on Crime Boss “Life Is Crying” song. Only being signed to Suave House for about two years and the towards the end of the label’s hot streak, the duo never dropped their own project but still managed to make a impact on the label with their features.
