Outkast was a two man Hip Hop group consisting of members André 3000 and Big Boi, predating the spelling of the word BOI to replace boy. The duo was formed in 1992 and broke up in 2007, and reformed again only for 2014, and so far the group doesn’t seem to want to come back and André 3000’s newest album isn’t even a Rap album. This is the debut from this group which shows the two coming from humble beginnings, and also shows how they would become popular with later albums like ATLiens (1996), Aquemini (1998), and Stankonia (2000). This album takes a huge influence from Funk and Soul while it talks about the coming of age about young African Americans growing up in the south, and it really incorporates southern slang on here which made me want to research the slang the south uses to understand this album. #OnThisDay The legendary Outkast dropped their debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik in 1994. 🎤 Andre 3000 and Big Boi met at age 16 and they attended the same high school where they would take part in rap battles. They eventually teamed up and would also form the Dungeon Family supergroup along with Organized Noize and Goodie Mob. 🎤 Outkast's debut was entirely produced by Organized Noize and there were two features from Goodie Mob. 🎤 Singles include the title track as well as Player's Ball which was their first signature song. It's also somewhat of a Christmas anthem. 🎤 Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik landed at No.20 on the Billboard Charts and was eventually certified platinum. It was also released to critical acclaim earning 4 1/2 mics from The Source and considered by some to be a classic. It's also viewed as a pivotal moment for Southern hip hop. 🎤 The success of their debut saw Outkast win Best New Artist at The Source Awards during the infamous 'East Coast-West Coast rivalry'. In the early 1990s, the West Coast began their rise in challenging the East Coast’s dominance in the rap game. The South was not really respected in Hip Hop at the time. After befriending each other in 1992, rappers @andre3000 and @bigboi pursued recording music as a duo calling themselves @outkast. They began working with production team @organizednoize leading to their signing with LaFace Records. They began recording their debut album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” in a studio called “The Dungeon.” Entirely produced by Organized Noize, it features live instrumentation in its production and includes musical elements of Hip Hop, Funk and Soul. The album viewed them showing a focus on delivering a high level of lyricism Atlanta wasn’t known for. The themes Outkast speak on addresses urban life as an African American in the South and coming of age topics. Southern slang and repetitive hooks were featured and incorporated in the album. 30 years ago today on April 26, 1994, It was released via LaFace Records. It peaked in the top 20 of the @billboardcharts eventually certified platinum. It featured three hit singles: “Player’s Ball”, “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik”, and “Git Up, Git Out” with @goodiemob. “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” received positive reviews from critics helping distinguish The South as a credible Hip Hop scene and opened the door for the South to gain mainstream attention. OutKast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994). 30th Anniversary. Atlanta, Georgia was always best described as some sort of mecca for Black people down South as there was always something special in the atmosphere when it came to the lifestyle, the hospitality, and the culture of it all. While the West coast were too busy occupying the rap game in the mid-90's, the South was often looked at as just an afterthought when it came to rap music. Don't get me wrong, we've had several of artists such as 2 Live Crew, Arrested Development, and Geto Boys to have some success in rap coming out of the South, but it still felt like the South had more to offer and hip hop weren't really giving them a fair chance during this time. Andre 3000 and Big Boi both went to the same high school in Atlanta and soon discovered each other's love and passion for hip hop to the point that they would often have rap battles in their school cafeteria. The Atlanta natives later formed their own rap group called "OutKast" and then recorded some demo tapes with the help of their friends and production team Organized Noize in hopes to score a record deal. In 1993, after shopping around their music to local record label, Atlanta-based record label "LaFace Records" picked them up as their first rap act on their roster mostly made up of R&B singers. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" was like a safari ride through the streets of Atlanta which consisted of drugs, violence, pimps, and players, all while spittin' that Southern slang throughout the entire listening. The success of "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" went on to define the sound of the South as it opened many doors and spotted opportunities for future Southern acts to soon have their chance in rap music. As we all know, OutKast has went on to become one of the greatest rap groups of all time and have made a major impact on the music world to this day, so let's us not forget the classic album that kick things off and set the foundation of what Southern hip hop is today. Most of my favorite rappers are from there and although there are some ignorant lyrics – which you can easily find among New York rappers as well – this is where storytelling was always an important part of the lyrics. #30years! Today in #HipHopHistory: #Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is the #1994 debut album of #southernhiphop duo #Outkast. After befriending each other in 1992, rappers #Andre3000 and #BigBoi pursued recording music as a duo and worked with production team #OrganizedNoize, which led to their signing to #LaFaceRecords. The album was produced by the team and recorded at the Dungeon, D.A.R.P. Studios, #PurpleDragon, #Bosstown, and #DopplerStudios in Atlanta. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik features live instrumentation in its #hiphop production and musical elements from funk and soul genres. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in the South, Outkast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age topics with the album's songs. They also incorporated repetitive hooks and #southernslang in their lyrics. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik peaked at number 20 on the #Billboard200, eventually being certified #platinum in the United States. The record received positive reviews from critics and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene, amid East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. The album has since been viewed by music journalists as an important release in both hip hop and Atlanta's music scene. The album's lead single, " #PlayersBall", was released on November 19, 1993. Originally intended as a Christmas release, it featured the sound of sleigh bells in its original mix, but it was removed once the single began receiving more airplay. The single received its highest exposure in February 1994 with heavy airplay and promotion, including a music video directed by #SeanCombs. #PuffDaddy had received a copy of the single from LaFace founder #LAReid and invited Outkast to New York to perform as an opening act for Notorious BIG. 30 years ago Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik dropped. And with that OutKast alongside Organized Noize ushered in a new sound to HipHop straight from the dungeon. Big Boi & Andre 3000 were lyrically untouchable while Organized Noize brought us some funky laid back trippy beats. This was my introduction to the dirty south & how classic music was made out there. And it is hands down a classic from track 1 to 17. The fact that their first single was technically a Christmas song but could still be played in all seasons was genius. Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik was the follow up single and had some incredible remixes on it. Their last single Git Up Git Out was not only the best song on the album(in my humble opinion) but it also helped introduce the world to Goodie Mob. Through out the years OutKast would continue to evolve in sound, lyrics & style all the while staying true to themselves and their crew, and their introduction to the world could not have been better. Without this HipHop is vastly different and who knows what impact the south particularly Atlanta would have had. To this day a lot of superstars from those parts watched, learned and got their start in the dungeon. The reach is far & wide and today this debut gets mad spins as it most definitely deserves. Not only were they from the South but they were on some player shit and they were lyrical. Many highlights on this album and insane features, gives a good perspective that yes, people know who Killer Mike is. This album definitely deserved a Grammy win and should definitely be talked about more. Very huge for a veteran rapper to win something in recent times like this. Only thing is I do wish the pressing was different since it doesn’t match the vibe of the album, but since it’s only limited to 500, I appreciate it more since it’s a bit rare to get. But nonetheless, I still had to get it on vinyl.
