Happy New Year! It's been a while, a year in fact, since I have added any new objects to my website. I started off with good intentions last year to add objects to my site every month, but I started a challenging new day job in February and had a lot going on in my life which put a hold on that. The group of objects I have added to my website this month is a diverse group of mainly smaller objects. A couple of my favorites are a wonderful Bono/Brong akua'ba figure and a fantastic Lobi couple. The Lobi couple had been together for many years but were unfortunately separated in 2021, and after a little bit of work I was excited to be able to unite them again. I have always admired Bembe figures and I'm excited to offer a nice strong small one from a private collection that originally comes from the collection of Frans Olbrechts (1899-1958), Belgium, who was the former director of the Congo Museum at Tervuren, Belgium in 1947 (now the Royal Museum for Central Africa) before it eventually made its way into the collection of New York collectors Jean and Noble Endicott. I also am offering 3 Lulua/Luluwa figures that are of the type that were made by skilled artists specifically for sale to colonial officers and missionary workers in the early part of the 20th century. They are authentic, non-traditional art forms that to me document an interesting period in the earlier history of African art. I did a small write-up on my thoughts on them which is included on the page for them on my website.
