Turtles are on the roads and getting injured! Our slow moving friends need our help to keep our eyes peeled and to slow down when you see them. If it’s safe you can even help them across the road! If you see an injured turtle you can help it by bringing it to one of the participating vets and we will transport it to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre for rehabilitation. https://www.turtleskingston.com/turtle-trauma-response-program 📸 photo : thanks to Sshuanna B for sharing this and other photos with us. #turtlewarrior #injuredturtle #ibrakeforturtles #slowdownforturtles

- Honor Bound: Tales of the Samurai Turtles - In the In an ancient Japanese city, a group of samurai turtles roamed the streets, vigilant protectors of the city. Without a master to guide them, they trusted in their unspoken bond and years of training together. Their shells were a formidable barrier, and their katanas flashed like silver lightning in the night. United in purpose, they stood guard over their beloved home, a silent force that kept the city safe from any who would dare bring harm. . . . When it is safe for you to do so help a turtle cross the road by moving it in the direction it was heading. Some road safety considerations Road safety is key: 1️⃣ pull completely off the road in a safe location without any turtles 2️⃣ put on your 4-way flashers 3️⃣ wear a high reflective safety vest wear eye protection, close toed shoes, and a hard hat if you have access to them 4️⃣ place a safety cone at the rear of your vehicle; and 5️⃣ always wear gloves when handling turtles as they carry a variety of bacteria – if you do not have gloves be sure to wash your hands before eating or touching your face. #ibrakeforturtles #turtlewarrior

Look at that tail! If you are ever wondering what species of turtle you have found look at the tail. A sure sign you’ve found a snapping turtle is the long long tail with ‘spikes’ on it. Northern Map turtles and even Eastern Musk turtles have been misidentified as snapping turtles but they don’t have this tail!!!! 📸 photo: thanks to Monique for sharing this and other turtle photos with us. #snappingturtle #turtlelover #turtlewarrior

Don’t miss out on your chance to experience this awesome Turtle Trails activity! This will be the last year we are facilitating this activity for Turtles Kingston as we’ve got our own NEW turtle activity in the works for 2025. This new upcoming activity will still support Turtles Kingston with a donation from every booking, but will be different than their Turtle Trails program that takes you on an adventure through a turtle's life cycle and all the trials they face! Don’t fret too much, Turtles Kingston will continue to offer the Turtle Trails at a reduced capacity (less offerings and to a smaller geographical region) in 2025. If this program is something you’re interested it’s best to book this year! #turtles #turtleskingston #turtlelover #turtlewarrior

As early as next month (May) turtles may start nesting. What should you do if you find a nesting turtle? 🐢 1️⃣ Keep your distance (at least 5 m, ideally 10 m) and allow the turtle to finish nesting. If you do approach the turtle be sure to stay behind it and do not linger. 2️⃣ Once the turtle has finished nesting see if the mother needs help crossing any roads. Be aware that she may travel in an arch to get to water on the same side of the road as her. This arch may make it look like she wants to cross the road so be patient to wait and see if that is truly what she wants. 3️⃣ If possible, place a nest protector box over the nest to protect from predation. If you cannot place a nest protector box then leave the nest as is. You can learn more about placing nest protectors on our website. https://www.turtleskingston.com/nest-protection-program #nowwhat ‼️ NEVER alter a turtle nest as this is illegal and you can actually harm and even kill the eggs if you disturb it! 📸 photo: thank you to Monique for sharing this and other photos with us. #turtles #turtlewarrior #turtefacts

Why did the turtle cross the road? To get to the other side of course! In the process of crossing roads turtles have realized that gravel shoulders are the perfect nesting spots. They are sand and gravel (a favourite material), in direct sunlight (a requirement for incubation), and void of vegetation (a bonus for hatchling development). Unfortunately, our road maintenance practices directly conflict with turtles using these areas for nesting. In the spring, to repair roads after winter, municipalities grade road shoulders which involves digging up the shoulder to level it. Imagine any nest in that gravel shoulder … it would get demolished! There is an easy solution, move road maintenance to before the turtle nesting season that starts in May. Of course this won’t save all nests as some painted and map turtle hatchlings spend all winter in the nest, emerging in the spring between March and June, but it will help. The City of Kingston - Municipal Government set an example in 2019 by doing just this. In April if 2019 the Kingston Public Works Department adjusted their road grading schedule so it occurred earlier in the season - to avoid any conflict with nesting turtles! Other municipalities can do it too! Reach out to your municipality to let them know how they can make this easy change to help turtle populations! #roadmaintenance #turtlelove #turtlewarrior #conservatio

With spring around the corner and March here turtles are imminent. You may see turtles as early as this month - especially with the warmer weird winter we’ve had. Keep your eyes out on roads for emerging hatchlings that overwintered in the nest. They will be coming out between March and June to make their way to water. Show your support for turtles with our car magnets. Available from our online order form “turtle store” or Potter's Nurseries. We will be restocking FREE bumper stickers around town soon. https://www.turtleskingston.com/turtle-store #turtles #turtlewarrior #ibrakeforturtles #springiscoming

If you’ve been following us for any period of time you’ve likely seen us mention how all Ontario’s turtles are species at risk. But what does that truly mean. Species at risk are species whose populations are declining and making their way down the path to possibly becoming extinct. From special concern to extirpated we have Ontario turtles in each category. #speciesatrisk #turtles #turtlelover #turtlewarrior

There are so many things you can do to help turtles and at Turtles Kingston we try to do a little bit of everything. Our 5 ‘modules’ address action now, working towards further action, speak for turtles where they need to be heard, spread education and awareness and work together with individuals and organizations. As turtle warriors you can help us with all modules. Mitigation - we are collecting information about turtles on roads to help provide knowledge and proof for the need for mitigation in certain spots. https://www.turtleskingston.com/submit-observations Education and Awareness - learn from our social media and help us spread the word. You can even book us for an informational presentation or our turtle trials. https://www.turtleskingston.com/turtle-programs Collaboration and partnering - have a business or know of one that would like to support turtles? They could help distribute our car magnets and bumper stickers. Own property where turtles nest then use our knowledge to help protect your turtles. Advocacy - speak up for turtles when you see the opportunity. Let us know about issues around Kingston, lend your support on issues we ask for help. Immediate action - use our programs such as our nest protection, turtle trauma, and nest rescue programs to help turtles. Plus, help them cross roads when you can (and it is safe). #turtlelove #turtleconservation #kingstonontario #turtlewarrior

Continuing to number crunch… Our turtle monitoring program, lead by our science coordinator Lesley, had a very successful season with 76 turtle nests protected in our study site in downtown kingston (the exact location is kept private to protect these species at risk). Our group of volunteers were dedicated and spend lots of time monitoring, protecting and photographing turtles. We know for sure that there were 72 individual turtles seen as they had scientific markings. It is very likely that many more individual turtles were seen, but as they were unmarked we cannot confirm how many there actually were. Regardless, even 72 unique turtles nesting in our small study area is crazy to think about! #successstories #turtlelove #turtleconservation #turtlewarrior #science

There are so many people out in our community doing wonderful things to help protect turtle populations! We thank each and everyone of you for what you do! Today we wanted to specifically thank Irene. Irene lives in a place that is lucky enough to be frequented by turtles. This year alone Irene has helped more than 52 turtles back to a near by lake, knows of 5 turtle nests on their property, and has documented more than 60 snapping turtle hatchlings that have emerged. Even Irene's dog Gracie helps protect turtles by finding the hatchlings stuck between rocks. Thank you Irene for being a turtle warrior! The turtles around your home are in great hands! #turtlewarrior

If you’ve protected a turtle nest on public property now is the time to remove your nest protectors. Most hatchlings will have made their way out of the nest. That is with the exception of northern map turtles and midland painted turtles that may overwinter in the nest. These hatchlings would have hatched but they will emerge from their nests in spring 2024. You can keep nest protectors on until June 2024 if they are on your private property but for safety during winter please remove public property nest protectors. #turtles #brunation #nestprotection #turtlenests #turtlewarrior

Helping a common snapping turtle cross a road or trail may be intimidating but there are ways to stay safe and not get snapped. Our science coordinator Lesley shows one carry method here - one we consider a little advanced. 🍕We commonly suggest the pizza carry method: 1️⃣ With your non dominant hand, firmly grasp the back of the shell between the tail and hind leg. Be sure to NEVER hold a turtle by their tail!!! 2️⃣ Slide your dominant hand under the turtle, so that your palm is against the underside of the turtle. 3️⃣ Anchor your elbows to your waist and gently lift the turtle. 4️⃣ Be prepared for a snap from the turtle. When comfortable and secure walk the turtle in the direction that it was headed 🚫 a myth we like to bust - the common snapping turtle cannot bite off your finger. They have the bite capacity of a human. Many of the scary videos and facts out there are for a different snapping turtle species than the common snapping turtle we have in Ontario. #snappingturtle #turtlewarrior #mythsandfacts #mythbusters

Each month Turtles Kingston puts out a blog post. We've written blogs about protecting turtle nests, what turtles do over winter, turtles as pets, road mitigation, and more. This month enjoy a blog about the unfortunate reality of poaching. It happens here in Ontario, and even in Kingston! https://www.turtleskingston.com/blog We know it happens in Kingston as in 2020 a bunch of nest protectors Turtles Kingston had been protecting were poached and more than 300 eggs were taken, devastating our coordinators and the turtle populations. There is a common dilemma. We want to protect turtle nests with nest protectors but then the nest protectors can attract the attention of poachers. So what should be done? There is no right answer to this, but we suggest that nest protection efforts avoid congregating multiple nest protectors in one location. Also, always remember to keep turtle and turtle nest locations private! #poaching #nestprotection #turtlewarrior #turtles #blog

We would like to introduce Pamela who will be joining the Turtles Kingston Team as the Education Coordinator. We are very excited to have Pamela join our team! What does the Education Coordinator do? The Education Coordinator leads Turtles Kingston education efforts, which includes creating social media content, responding to comments, helping to coordinator booths at public events, and helping with presentations. Who is Pamela? Often on the water before sunrise, Pamela can be found paddling silently around the lake in her kayak in search of nature's hidden wonders. She is far more of a spot-finder than a hiker, exploring new trails, and parks as much as possible. With a Bachelor of Fine Art from OCAD University, Pamela's creativity is expressed in many forms - from macro photography to painting the flowers in her garden. It was in the garden that her fascination with turtles began, discovering a tiny snapper hatchling wandering in search of water. A week later witnessing 8 hatchlings crawl from their nest in her yard, she knew it was a sign that she wanted to volunteer to raise awareness and help the local turtle population. #welcometotheteam #turtlewarrior #turtleskingston #volunteer #marketing
