The path to the beach from Beach Camp is lined with Deer Moss. Native to parts of Florida, this lichen is very slow growing, has no root system (gets its moisture from the air) and is often used to create miniature trees and shrubs by architects and model rain enthusiasts. Day 67/100: Water within the trees - Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs lay their eggs in moist foliage on the ground. Once the eggs hatch, the mother frog carries her tadpoles, one or two at a time, on her back up a tree and deposits each one in a small pool of water, usually inside the cup of a bromeliad plant (also known as air plants). Like other species of poison dart frogs, these frogs derive the toxins they exude from the bugs that they eat. (Dart frogs in captivity have a different diet and are therefore not actually poisonous.) The tadpoles of the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog start accumulating these toxins from their diet. The mother goes around to the private pools each of her babies and lays an unfertilized egg for them to eat until they are fully grown and able to venture off on their own. Frogs are pretty awesome and I should draw more of them. Unique: My wife and I were visiting Galveston, Texas, USA recently. It was just a quick stop on a whirlwind trip but we were close enough to the gulf and my wife hadn't visited it before so we at least made it to stick our toes in the water. The gulf is know for being fairly warm water which is a pleasant change from the coasts of the Pacific NW, USA where we live. We also noted how the gulls are different with their black heads. Ours are all white. It's interesting the little differences between places. So much the same around the world and yet so much variety. And the variety is why we like to travel. I mean, we like things being at least somewhat familiar - it makes a trip a little less nerve racking. I know some like traveling to extremely new places. It makes for much of an adventure and it's part of what keeps some people from traveling at all. I like an adventure sometimes but not all the time. Some times I want to relax more.
