@sfciviccenter is in red/pink – in recognition of the SF Cherry Blossom Festival and Parade @cherryblossomfest 🌸 There are two Koi Ground Mural painted by local artist @jeremynovy . You can find street artist Jeremy Novy’s signature koi fish stencil across the City of San Francisco. He recently finished these two giant Koi’s mural by Fulton Plaza. The mural consists of 2 giant koi (Double Happiness), each ranging from ~65-70ft in length, circling the Pioneer Monument. In Japanese Culture, the koi is a symbol of luck, prosperity, and good fortune. While Cherry Blossoms (The sakura flowers ) are symbolic for the people of Japan, representing hope and new life. 118 years later, San Francisco remembers the earthquake and fire of 1906. Today, residents and city leaders gathered at Lotta’s Fountain to mark the occasion. The earthquake and fire, marked a period of change for Potrero Hill. The neighborhood gained much publicity after the earthquake. Several newspapers stated that it was one of the safest places to be in case of another earthquake. Here’s a toast to 35 years to Farley’s Coffee on Potrero Hill. Farley’s is a community coffee institution, serving up java, community, and connection since 1989. Roger Hillyard first opened Farley’s in March 1989. He named the place after his grandfather – Jack Farley – who disappeared in the early 1920s, leaving behind only one picture, represented in the café’s logo. Once the Panama Pacific International Exhibition was closed to the public, the Exposition Company had the enormous task of cleaning out the entire site. Hoping to recoup some additional revenue, the company sold every fixture, piece of equipment, plant and building off to the highest bidder. A few agencies and municipalities purchased the smaller buildings that could be transported by boat to new locations. San Mateo County purchased the Ohio Building (the photo shows the Ohio building being towed to Belmont); Marin County purchased the Wisconsin and Virginia Buildings; the army maintained the Oregon Building on its Presidio location as a military clubhouse. Some of the larger buildings that were too big to move, like the Tower of Jewels, were disassembled and sold to scavengers. “Take a book, share a book.” A new addition to our neighborhood with a Little Free Library at 18th and Missouri. The first Little Free Library was built in 2009 by the late Todd Bol in Hudson, Wisconsin. Bol mounted a wooden container, designed to look like a one-room schoolhouse, on a post on his lawn and filled it with books as a tribute to his late mother, a book lover and school teacher who had recently died. Little Free Library officially incorporated as a nonprofit organization on May 16, 2012. More than 150,000 public book exchanges are registered with the organization and branded as Little Free Libraries. Through Little Free Libraries, present in 115 countries, millions of books are exchanged each year, with the aim of increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. I spent a month an a jury last fall. (Call me crazy but this line must be read with the same accent and cadence Meryl Streep used as Karen Blixen at the beginning of Out of Africa when she says, “I had a farm in Africa.” It will set the scene nicely. - So it was a murder case. And I had not really completely shaken off the Nevada desert dust (mud really)so it was a shock to the system on a number of different levels. - I also had a looming deadline — I’m a volunteer photographer on the Burning Man Documentation Team, and photos were due at the end of the month. So I spent most breaks from the courtroom face-first in my laptop, trying not to think about the case, yet nonetheless living in the past, editing pictures of another world. - Coinciding with all of this was the opening of the De Young Open, and I was equally honored and humbled to have a picture included in the exhibition. - The artists’ preview started the exact moment I was chosen as juror #4. A scene whose retelling will surely delight anyone lucky enough to direct my biopic. - Anyway, where was I. Hall of Justice. 7th & Bryant. A lot. I started walking home every evening — to near Mount Sutro — to clear my mind. I took a lot of pictures. Mostly with my phone but also with my little x100v. - This also coincided with Dianne Feinstein’s death and her returning to San Francisco to lie in state at City Hall. Complete with the Blue Angels paying tribute every afternoon with not just flyovers but entire airshows (it was Fleet Week 🙄). - It was a time tailormade for walking and reflecting. Tho I don’t think I realized at the time how few people were evidently around. - Here are some of the pictures from those weeks. And at the end, my picture from the De Young Open.
