One significance of working to find our place of positive and constructive integration is to help us differentiate between real-hope, and imagined-hope. Real hope is when we can see a positive and constructive pathway forward, and how we might take steps along this path. Even though we cannot know the what the final destination might be like, we can see how our efforts are improving a situation or circumstance in healthy and meaningful ways. Imagined-hope is when we can see a desired pathway, but implementing the steps seem impossible to incorporate into our reality. This doesn’t make an idealized-hope less important, it means we can consider interpreting this hope as an ideal, and not accessible at this moment in time. And, we might need to adjust what we are hoping for, at least for now. When we are able to learn and adapt in positive and constructive ways, even though these might not be ideal, we are finding our best possible pathways to discover how our real-hope can sustain and support us, through both the pleasant and unpleasant episodes in our life journey. Als ich diesen Satz zum ersten Mal hörte, konnte ich mich so sehr mit ihm identifizieren, dass es weh tat - nicht weil ich so fühle, sondern weil er genau den Punkt trifft, den ich übersehen habe. Meine Entwicklung, vor allem persönliche Weiterentwicklung, war mir immer das Wichtigste. Wenn ich mich selbst liebe, dann bin ich glücklich. Wenn ich mich sicher binden kann, dann bin ich glücklich. Wenn ich mehr im Gleichgewicht bin, dann bin ich glücklich. Ich habe mich verloren - in der Weiterentwicklung: Workshops, Kurse, Jobs, Coaching - alles, um am Ende doch einfach glücklich zu sein. „Jetzt nehme ich nicht nur meine Entwicklung ernst, sondern auch mich selbst als Person.“ Dieser Satz hat mich aufgeweckt. Ich muss nicht aufhören, mich weiterzuentwickeln, aber zumindest dafür sorgen, mich nicht dadurch zu definieren, sondern stattdessen zu leben - jetzt, in diesem Moment. Das ist alles, was ich habe. „Mich als Person ernst zu nehmen“ - als die Marla, die ich jetzt bin, mit den Aufs und Abs des Lebens, sie, mich zu fühlen, das Leben zu fühlen. Vielleicht bin ich noch immer nicht ganz da, aber vielleicht geht es genau darum: zu akzeptieren, dass ich mich vielleicht noch nicht zu jedem Moment ernst nehme. I am so BLESSED! I am so grateful. It’s my birthday! 🎉 I am 49 but I look and feel not a day over 32 😂 This is special for me as I got a diagnosis of breast cancer in January. Before I could wrap my mind around what they told me, I had a surgery date to remove it. It all reminded me that your life can change in a moment’s time. Thankfully it was caught very early. On Wednesday evening I was invited to take part in an online #careers event with the @gdstgirls As an ex-student of @suttonhighschool I was delighted to be able to get involved as I really value the education and experiences I gained whilst learning there. I was also lucky enough to teach there too before I moved to Cornwall. The focus of my 10-minute talk was primarily how I have utilised my psychology degree to develop @wildwonderandwisdom and shared the transitional, untaught skills that I have discovered and nurtured along the way. The main take away was that my career has been very diverse and has developed organically. I feel proud that I have managed to found a #socialenterprise that encapsulates everything that I believe is important and often missing from our education offer in recent years. I feel content that I have been able to use my privilege to be able to create something positive that gives back to my community. Although the precise date in 2024 {as measured in degrees along the ecliptic} falls on the 5th May. Samhain is also known as the Witches New Year, as this time marked the final harvest & therefore the death of the old & the beginning of a new cycle. These are the true witching hours where nature provides the prevailing darkness & the icy fingertips of Winter begin to take hold. That which is usually out of sight & imperceptible has the potential to easily grace our subtle vision. Our ancestors are beckoning & those of the spiritual world are eagerly awaiting this portal of the natural world to open. This magical moment of the wheel of the year has the power to forge our connection with dearly missed ancestors and loved ones who have passed over. All that usually presides on the other side of the veil will come closer, making soft whispers to ensure their presence is felt. All we have to do is lean in. Rituals, divination & spell work done at this time will have enhanced enigmatic energy. Samhain comes forth from ancient lineages & is a heartfelt offering to sink our very beings into liminal spaces & places. Of crossing invisible thresholds. A sense of the highest magic is invoked when we intertwine with those that came before us. They are in fact, the very reason we are here at all. I’ve seen that creating art is a transformative and healing experience. Like a fresh gust of wind, learning to paint has blown away dusty cobwebs of old notions, pretences and excuses for not living a life in alignment with my purpose. I’m so grateful to have rediscovered a freedom in thought and being that I’ve not known since early childhood. This is a lifelong journey where everything has meaning. Every painting, every moment of elation or uncertainty, mistake or moment of breakthrough are equally important parts of it. It really IS true what is said of journeys; the destination is not what really counts. It is the everyday yesses that are paving the way: an heartfelt yes to why I’m learning to create beauty through my paintings, a bold yes to myself as a painter and an integral yes to following my heart’s dream with all I have, armed with passion and a paintbrush in the hand. A particularly beautiful aspect of this journey is that I’m not travelling alone. There’s an ever expanding community of artists and coaches, each pursuing their own dream but supporting each other and lifting up others on the way. For that I’m forever grateful. 🔴Reflecting Along the Journey by Davis & Elkins College President Chris A. Wood⚫️ Higher education adheres to shared governance. There are three groups that work together to operate a college; namely, the administration headed by the president, the faculty, and the board of trustees. Well-functioning institution, like Davis & Elkins College, have all three of these working collaboratively. The D&E Board of Trustees is a group of 25 volunteers plus the president who have fiduciary responsibility for the college. The Board is led by an elected chair who for the past 3+ years has been Mark Barber, D&E class of 1975. As Mark prepares to step down from his role at the end of June, I have been reflecting on his service.
