This is a lovely and most unusual late 19th century Japanese red lacquer chest of drawers with a beautiful deep colour and attractive patination. The chest has all its original hand forged ironwork handles and strapwork and has swing over lifting handles that were used with a beam slid through for two people to transport the chest around. Direct-L Button-driven adding machine with printing unit Approx. 1950 The machine was developed by Hans Huber and Carl Moersch around 1920 (Martin [1936]) and manufactured by Theo Muggli, Zurich. The mode of operation when multiplying (leever left to “x”) is the same with the Comptometer machines. However, the switching element is not the usual swing lever with the planetary gear of the Comptometer, but a much simpler constructed lever and gear movement (Anthes [1984]). The base machine is Model II. Addition and subtraction (minus button) take place as usual. For multiplication, the keyboard erasure must be switched off (lever left on X). Division is possible, for example, by multiplying by the reciprocal of the divisor (corresponding reverse tables are to be used here). The model L also has a printing unit, whereby the values are printed by means of a hand lever on the front right.
