‘Grotto’ is hand sculpted of sterling silver, fine silver, and a hemimorphite druzy. In times past, grottoes were often used as places to commune with divinities. Symbolic of journeys, the ability to pass from one world to the next, even from life to death and back again. Something about a watery cave appeals to the human sense of mystery and asks us to seek reasons for both darkness and light. There is also a certain romance associated with grottoes – an idea that anything might be possible. It makes sense that people would decorate them, leave offerings, turn them into fanciful shrines. I have dedicated my little grotto to spring, land of flowers and blistering blue skies. As such, I sculpted this piece with flower petals to hold the sky in place and with eclectic, fanciful elements scattered throughout. If you look closely, you will also find contrasts between dark and light, hidden and visible. Nothing is truly hidden within this design, but to view all within you must of course seek what is hidden. 'Frenzy' is hand sculpted of sterling silver and a fordite cabochon. Run here, run there…do this, do that….calmness is a lovely bit of nostalgia in today’s world. Everything requires movement, even scrolling through your phone. New hobbies that should be pursued immediately, knowledge that should have been learned yesterday, finding a use for that bread machine that’s been gathering dust since you realized bread was not your forte. In today’s world, we must not only be Renaissance women (and men) knowing how to do a bit of absolutely everything whilst dabbling in the rest, but we must appear beautiful and interesting while doing so. It’s an impossible task. I only get out of sweats when leaving the house, and that’s because my vanity wins over my desire for comfort. I’d like to think many others feel the same. I have no desire to learn how to knit cat fur into a sweater or to figure out which seeds will produce the most pollinators and thus save the world, one bloom at a time. I like the flower, I plant the flower, I hope for the best. It’s a rough world out there, folks. I recommend stepping away from the frenzy and deciding what you like, if anything. And if there’s nothing to like, so be it….no one’s forcing you to like a thing. ‘Frenzy’ is an invitation to step off the hamster wheel and see if hamsters are really your sort of speed. I’ve always admired snails, personally. They get where they’re going eventually, they’re interesting to look at, and they have a place to disappear in when the world becomes absurd. Whatever your preference, have at it. Written in the stars…fate…destiny…meant to be…however you put it, some things must surely be kismet. Years ago, I stood at the French doors of my grandparent’s home looking at a kitten playing with its mother and siblings on their porch. I took one look at the silvery gray kitten and knew that one day that kitten was going to be mine. A couple months later, the mother abandoned that particular kitten, and I brought him home. At this very moment, Kitten George is sitting beside me assisting me in writing my stories for this new collection. He is the only cat I’ve ever had who likes to supervise me in my studio. Every time I look at him, I think of the little sparks of kismet in this life. Destiny doesn’t have to be big, grand things that shift the direction of the world. Sometimes kismet is just a baby kitten stumbling into your life, bringing a bit of joy to each day (though…truth be told…he was a nightmare of a kitten…I didn’t realize kittens could actually climb walls until I spent one sleepless night watching him do just that…fate can’t be all sunshine and rainbows ;) ). ‘Kismet’ is a whimsical ring dedicated to the bits of whimsy in life.
