This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar. I took a trip to Chisinau back in March. Here’s the State Circus - abandoned since 2004. There is still an active small circus for kids in a part of the building around the back, but you can’t see inside the main building from there (I checked with some locals who also said the supposed restoration has been going on years with hardly any signs of progress). Charlotte Mew, Selected Poetry and Prose (ed. Julia Copus). : "...the world must die with me." —Impossibility, Mew Spring is incomplete without reading some Charlotte Mew. This is the only poet I consider to be the last great transitional bridge between the Victorian and Modernist periods. The deep influence of British Romanticism, Pre-Raphaelites, and obviously Hardy is unmistakable. There are some hints of Graveyard Poets and their style of writing. Her two volumes of poems that we treasure are: The Farmer's Bride (1916/1921) and The Rambling Sailor (1929). Writing during WWI and constantly suffering economically do introduce a sense of urgency to her poems. The Hardys were her patron! Anyway, sharing some passages on Spring here. If you are reading Mew for the first time then definitely read: 'The Saturday Market' (an abortion poem, which she used to read out loud to the Hardys), 'In Nunhead Cemetery,' 'The Farmer's Bride,' 'The Quiet House,' 'Ken,' 'The Forest Road,' 'Madeleine in Church,' 'The Rambling Sailor' (referencing Colerdige's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner), 'Fin de Fête,' and 'The Trees are Down.' The countryside, outcasts, trees, greenery, birds, and windows are recurring themes in most of these poems. Reading 'The Saturday Market,' which for me is Mew's greatest poem (and opinions may vary on this) on a Saturday morning in Spring is quite an out of body experience! Here we see a photo of the little known about #sculpture that is titled "Athena Tritogeneia", that is located at Belimarković Castle in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia. This sculpture was created by famous Belgrade #architect and artist Bogdan Bogdanović in 1981 as part of the 3rd annual Vrnjačka Banja sculpture symposium, which he participated in while working on his nearby massive monument project at Popina Spomen Park. This modest stone sculpture depicts the goddess Athena, who is often represented in antiquity as a wise owl figure, which explains the shape of the work. As far as "Tritogeneia", that was another name often used to refer to Athena.
