The water is coming; the park will flood. Design Studio 4 (LAN2014) asks how constructable, natural infrastructure strategies can mitigate the effects of urban flooding and create resilient spaces within constrained site conditions. Second-year MLA students studied Toronto’s Smythe Park and the neglected reach of Black Creek that runs through it. In their final review, they presented design proposals for a new, floodable park. Land(scape) and Memory (LAN1012), the second design studio in the Master of Landscape Architecture sequence, introduces concepts, terminology and design research tools for academic and professional work concerning cultural and political history, community engagement and multicultural collaborations, as well as the creation of spaces for ongoing public participation, dialogue, stewardship, shared governance and civic expression. In the final phase of the studio, MLA students focused on “Memory, Land Relations and Indigenous Futurisms: Imagining the University of Toronto as an Indigenous Space.” Working in pairs, they developed a design proposal that imagines First Peoples histories, languages, communities, cultural protocols and sovereignty as driving factors of the development and redevelopment of the public realm of the U of T St. George campus. 4/13/2024, 6:55:19 PM

ARC201 is an undergraduate studio-based introduction to design with an emphasis on the production of form and space. This course serves as a hands-on exploration of the relationships between material, tectonic, and programmatic organizations, with roots in the nine-square problem. The studio is structured around a series of cumulative exercises that support the development of a rigorous design methodology, through a constraint- and verb-driven process. These exercises culminate in the design of a student commons on the University of Toronto's St George campus. Original built in the 1870s, the building currently used by the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at 1 Spadina Crescent has seen many developments, including being the second location for Knox College. During World War I, it was turned into military barracks and a hospital. Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, worked as a nurse here during that time. #UniversityofToronto #UofT #UofTLore #UofTDaniels

Earlier this semester Master of Urban Design students Melisa Villegas, Duru Kaman, Mahima Patel, and Erendira Tranquilino spoke with us about their thesis’. Join us during final reviews to learn more about this work, as well as other amazing student work at Daniels. Stay tuned for our full review schedule! - 1. Melisa Villegas (@melvillegas) Bringing down the fence consists on the development of a proper instrument to support the planning and design of industrial communities and workplaces, which for decades have been segregated from the city, with limited services, transportation and accessibility. Advisor: Mason White 2. Duru Kaman (@durukaman) This study critiques Turkish cities’ earthquake responsiveness while reimagining earthquake-resistant urban landscapes through urban networks. Advisor: Maya Desai 3. Mahima Patel (@pmahima999) The thesis is a design and research exploration on the ongoing flooding crisis in coastal cities, due to climate change. It explores a multi-faceted idea of “resiliency” that expands beyond flood control to influence social, economic and environmental change for the city and its residents. Advisor: Mason White 4. Erendira Tranquilino (@erendira_tranquilino) Title: Water Crisis in Mexico City The project is a documentation and advocacy for making visible the current state, the effects, and possible solutions to the water crisis in Mexico City. Student Work Highlight! – Master of Architecture (MARC) student Liane Werdina’s project titled “An Archive of Memories, Washed Away,” seeks to subvert the Turkish state’s colonial displays of progress, through world expositions and acts of preservation, to protest on behalf of the Kurds of Hasankeyf. The 2024 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators has been awarded to Dallas Fellini, Master of Visual Studies student in the Curatorial Studies program. Established in 2012, the prize is awarded annually to a Canadian curator or curatorial team under the age of 30 with the goal of supporting an inclusive national arts sector while recognizing the vital role of exhibitions in expanding awareness and art histories. Fellini's curatorial work is situated at the intersection of trans studies and archival studies, interrogating the compromised conditions under which trans histories have been recorded and considering representational and archival alternatives to trans hypervisibility. Their winning submission for the Middlebrook Prize, a proposed exhibition called Some kind of we, features works that approach or incorporate t4t sensibilities. Some kind of we will be on view at the Art Gallery of Guelph later this year, from September through December. Today we observe Trans Day of Visibility, a day to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of trans people and raise awareness on persistent anti-trans discrimination and violence. In observing TDOV, we are critical of the ways that visibility is often conflated with empowerment. Visibility promises to remedy social crises, but in actuality often translates to endangering exposure for trans people or to the extractive treatment of transness and trans culture for public consumption. In the spirit of continued consideration of trans visibility’s double bind, we are pleased to announce 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙨, 𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙫𝙚𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨. May 1–July 27, 2024 Art Museum at the University of Toronto Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (in Hart House) 7 Hart House Circle This exhibition explores the invisible, the illegible, and the opaque as productive alternatives to contemporary trans hypervisibility, a circumstance wherein the realm of the representational risks becoming all that is offered to trans people, rather than material support or true sovereignty. Rather than approaching visibility as an issue to be resolved, the artists in this exhibition consider the potentials of retreating from view, reveling in the ineffable and unindexable qualities of transness. Curated by Dallas Fellini (@dallasknives), 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴, 𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 features work by Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley (@ladydangfua), Lucas LaRochelle (@lucaslarochelle), Joshua Schwebel (@joshua.then.and.now), Chelsea Thompto (@cthompto), and Lan “Florence” Yee (@lan.florence.yee). — This exhibition is produced as part of the requirements for the MVS degree in Curatorial Studies at the John H. . I want to be this figure. Bathing in light. Sitting on a ledge. Thinking about the simple things that make the world go round. Who is this figure? Did they get lost in space? Do they care to be found? Maybe it’s okay to misplace yourself From time to time. We’re all just figures. Figuring out how to move. Numbers that breathe.
