Maison Rouge is a family vacation home intended as an oasis, to withdraw to their roots in the countryside, the house is built on the family’s ancestral land in the heart of the Konkan belt. The Albert Krog House is a Missouri German style house that was built circa 1850 in Washington, Missouri. Albert Krog was born in Germany in 1827 and moved to Washington around 1848. He bought property outside of Washington where he soon began construction on a new house. The original portion of the house, which was finished around 1850, is on the left hand side. This meant that the house was originally a three-bay, side-entry house. It was built in a very restrained manner with the only exterior ornamentation being the dentiled cornice. The house was built of brick on a limestone foundation. Two years after this house was built Albert was married to Marie Schrader. They had a number of children together and did well for themselves. Marie was a school teacher in Washington and Albert was primarily a baker. He also grew grapes for wine and other crops on his land. He was making several hundred gallons of wine a year according to census records. Around 1868 he had an addition built for his house, seen on the left. It was finished in the same style as the original section. This made the house a center passage style one. Below the newer addition is a barrel-vaulted wine cellar. Albert owned the house until 1890 when it was advertised for sale by his son. Two year later Marie died and eventually Albert would in 1904. His son Albert Jr. later moved to Versailles, Missouri. It is believed that a F. L. Ehlenbeck bought the house from Albert Krog Sr. Ehlenbeck lived there until the 1920s and the house has since passed through a number of owners over the years. In 2000, like a number of other buildings in town, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently it is still standing looking much like it did in the 1870s.
Final church we visited was in Las Trampas, a lovely adobe building from the 1700's. You can't take photos in any if these churches so you have to use your imagination. A magical covered alleyway in Tellaro, near Casa Guelfi. The fishermen store their boats upside-down, held up against the beamed ceiling with cross-bars. A wonderful detail and one of many you'll find while exploring the area around the Cinque Terre, Montemarcello and Ameglia. Bruccianis, Readicut-style rug, wool and fleece, 2011. If this repeat pattern had been extended it would have produced wide diagonal bands of green, not sure how attractive. It was the ambience of Bruccianis cafe in Preston, probably not changed since the 1940s.The wiggly white lines are electric flex twining round poles ending in lampshades. This was incomprehensible to all but one person who said, "Is it a ceiling?" Other interpretations were various. The Henry F. Beinke House is a Missouri German style house that was built circa 1878 in Washington, Missouri. Henry Beinke was a German immigrant to Washington and was involved in his new town in a number of ways. Henry served as a city council member, and a part of the Washington Fire Brigade. He and his brother Hermann were involved in a company called Beinke Bros. which was a construction firm. While Henry left the partnership after a year and a half, Hermann was the more interested in construction reportedly having built a number of houses in the city. In 1878, while still in partnership with his brother Henry Beinke, a house was built for him. The house that was constructed was of modest size yet built much in line with the predominant Missouri German style in Washington. Unusual for this sized house is the ornate features found on this house. The most unusual are the wood cornice and recessed entryway. Above the cornice is a built in gutter along the front of the building The pedimented dormer is another stand out feature of the house which displays the house's excellent millwork. At the rear of the house is a porch that has an early addition from 1900, otherwise the house is much unchanged from when Henry had it built. Henry owned the house until the 1890s after he had already moved to St. Louis in 1885. He sold it to W. H. Wollbrink whose wife sold it to Julius Horn by the 1920s. The house has always been a single family home and has remained largely the same throughout its history. After historic surveys of Washington in the 1990s the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 along with a number of other historic buildings in town. It stands today still largely unchanged and looking much as it did back in 1878 when it was constructed.

I would like to encourage people to #dtiys would love to see what you come up with. I also share a wee reel showing you around the painting, and some close ups. What do you think, do you keep going back and tinkering, when do you know you are finished? Personally I think that shadow has added to the form of the painting. I tried to catch the light of this time of year, the cold shadows of late afternoon and the warmth of the horizontal sun, with spring around the corner. A complex piece of townscape which is so typical of Fife’s East Neuk with textures, colour, materials and built form to grab your attention. I created this in a Moleskine A4 watercolour sketchbook from their Art Collection, it’s all drawn in ballpoint and the watercolour is @artfulbox professional from @supportingallartists I also added my trademark mix of dilute acrylic ink for the shadows. I sketch whatever appeals to me and we had gone over to Fife with the dog for a walk around St Monans and I took hundreds of photographs to draw and paint from as the dogs patience only stretches to a photograph as opposed to a sketch or painting. If I haven’t drawn or painted something you would like I do commissions. Should I sell prints of the Black and White and Colour versions? Have you visited St Monans or live there?
