Want to learn about the printed history of SVA? Join an Archival Research Share with Logen Zimmerman on Monday, Nov 20, 1-2 pm in VARRL. SVA Operations Manager and unofficial historian, Logen Zimmerman @logenzrun, will provide background and context related to the November exhibition, Printed/Matters@SVA, that he has curated for the VARRL vitrine, “Blanche.” He will describe his process of selecting the objects from the School archive, as well as creatively interpreting them for the viewing public. The exhibition focuses on utilitarian graphic design, the printed picture, and text that unites visual form. These materials are displayed to reveal hidden histories of the School, and relate to both individual and collective memory. The exhibition is accompanied by recommended readings drawn from the VARRL collection. There will be snacks! "Blanche" is named in honor of Blanche E. Have you met “Blanche”? The Visual Arts Research and Resource Library (VARRL) now has a vitrine for mini-exhibitions, named in honor of Blanche E. Colman, the first director of an art program at Boston University (through the School of Education beginning in 1919). Each month “Blanche” will be curated by faculty, staff, and outside guests. October’s curator, Toni Pepe, @toni.pepe, Assistant Professor of Art and Chair, Department of Photography, organized an exhibition of items from her studio showcasing elements of her practice and highlighting themes and objects related to motherhood, caretaking, and time and space (as in outer space and photography’s ability to capture/compress a moment.) The objects in the vitrine included archival found photos, a boycott Nestlé pin, cyanotypes with breastmilk, 19th-century hand-blown glass nipple shields, Oreo Union cases with tintypes, child development brochures, and books including “Apollo’s Muse: The Moon in the Age of Photography,” flipped open to the page showing: Apollo 16 astronaut Charles Duke left a framed family photo on the Moon’s surface. David’s sculpture, video, installation, and image-based work engages the unstable and mutable potential of objects, language, imagery, physical space, and social relationships. Mark your calendar for Monday, Oct 16 from noon-1pm in VARRL for a Research & Resource Share: Arts Lab and Medical Illustration Internship Arts Lab is a partnership between CFA and BU's Medical Campus, looking at intersections between art and health and care. Join Arts Lab’s director Moisès Fernández Via to learn more about upcoming projects and how to get involved. It will also be an opportunity to learn about our Medical Illustration Internship, which is a partnership between SVA and the Center for Skull Base and Pituitary Surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Illustrated Verdict (a medical illustration firm in Boston). Medical illustration helps share complex ideas, clarifying disease. It’s a great way to explore the power of illustration, graphic arts, and design in enlivening medical narratives and information. Julia McGehean @julia.mcgehean 2nd year MFA Painting student spent the summer working with SVA staff on the great library reorganization project of Summer 2023. She reflects on the project and the time spent flipping through every single book in the Visual Arts Research & Resource Library (VARRL). “Stepping into VARRL on the first day of the project filled an absence in my practice that I had not yet acknowledged was there. I began working in art school and public libraries in 2014 as a sustainable way to support myself, while maintaining a consistent relationship with making in the studio. It was intimidating at first, but understanding the system for locating books truly changed my life. Flipping through the entire collection during the VARRL refresh reminded me of how important it is to browse through the stacks on a regular basis. It is such an immediate way for me to build out the historic and conceptual framework of my practice, while adding a dimensional set of reference points that I would never come across on my phone. Today is the official release of “Stamped From the Beginning,” graphic history of American racism created by Joel Christian Gill (@joelchristiangill), associate professor of art and chair of SVA’s new MFA in Visual Narrative (@buvisualnarrative), and Doctor Ibram Kendi (@ibramxk), founding director of BU’s Center for Antiracist Research (@antiracismctr). SVA’s Visual Arts Resource and Research Library (VARRL) was fortunate enough to have an advance copy that our summer work-study students have already read through. By adapting Dr. Kendi’s original 500-page narrative book into a graphic version, it makes this history of anti-Black, racist ideas accessible to broader audience. Come by the VARRL and check it out!
