Member: Mummy (aka Liam) WHAT DOES BEING A MEMBER OF VBCUK MEAN TO YOU? Why did I join? Well let me tell you! The club has supported me through difficult times when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. VBCUK has helped me grow into a better person, friend, and brother, and has enabled me to accomplish great things as part of the club. I’ve forged bonds that go beyond friendship to find a family of brothers who share my passion for the Viking way of life. With this group, I have found a true sense of belonging. They are my family, my brothers, they are my go-to place when life hits hard. They are also the pain in my arse sometimes but then again that’s family for you! _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 VBCUK - English Clan @VikingBeardClubEngland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 VBCUK - Alba Clan @VikingBeardClubscotland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybearded #Instabeard #Diversity #Inclusion

From their first recorded attack on Lindisfarne in 793, the Vikings have occupied an important place in European and Eurasian history. The images of horned helmets, dragon-headed boats, and filthy men (resembling Alexander Skarsgård) are burned into our collective perception of the early Scandivanians. How much of this is real, though, and how much is pop culture obfuscating history? Christian Raffensperger is the Kenneth E. Wray Chair in the Humanities at Wittenberg University. In this fascinating four-session course, Raffensperger will explore the initial outburst of Viking expansion beginning in the late eighth century, focusing on the ways in which Vikings lived at home and abroad, and examining the effects Vikings had on the various places where they ventured. How did they live? What did they do? And how did they get along with their neighbors? 🔗 in bio to register #vikings #vikingshistory #thor #history

Viking society was heavily armed and honor-based. Adult Viking men always kept weapons close at hand, even hanging them by their beds at night, ready to defend their reputations at any moment. The sword was the most expensive Viking weapon, requiring the most iron to forge. Only wealthy men could afford swords, the most prestigious arms. With double-edged blades around 35 inches long, most swords featured pattern welding - strips of wrought iron and steel twisted and hammered together to form a durable, hardened edge. Swords often bore elaborate decorations and fearsome names like Blood-hungry or Leg-biter. Sheathed in scabbards worn over the shoulder, Viking swords were always within easy reach of the right hand. The main weapons carried by Viking men were axes and spears. Battle axes featured long handles for extended reach in combat. The handles provided good balance, and the axe heads came in an array of shapes with razor-sharp 3 to 6 inch cutting edges. Later axe heads grew much larger, ranging from 9 to 18 inches long. Spears were likely the most prevalent Viking weapon since they required the least iron to produce. Spears could be thrown at enemies or used to thrust in close combat. Spearheads came in diverse forms, from slender and pointed to winged shapes near the shaft, and many boasted ornate iron decorations. Bows and arrows were also common Viking battle weapons. _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 VBCUK - English Clan @VikingBeardClubEngland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 VBCUK - Alba Clan @VikingBeardClubscotland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybearded #Instabeard #Diversity #Inclusion

Hail Thor (Old Norse: Þórr) the Norse god of thunder, the sky, and agriculture. He is the son of Odin, chief of the gods. Thor is the defender of Asgard, realm of the gods, and Midgard, the human realm, and is primarily associated with protection through great feats of arms in slaying giants. The majority of the tales featuring Thor, in fact, put him in conflict with a giant or with his nemesis the Midgard Serpent, Jörmungandr, a monstrous snake who coils and twists itself around the world. Like almost all of the Norse gods, Thor is doomed to die at Ragnarök, the end of the world and twilight of the gods, but falls only after killing the great serpent with his powerful hammer Mjölnir, dying to its poison; his sons Magni and Modi survive Ragnarök along with a small number of other gods and inherit his hammer which they use to restore order. “I am the Thunderer! Here in my Northland, My fastness and fortress, Reign I forever! Here amid icebergs Rule I the nations; This is my hammer, Miölnir the mighty; Giants and sorcerers Cannot withstand it!” - Saga of King Olaf, Longfellow #Þórsdagr #torsdag #Thursday _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 VBCUK - English Clan 🚩 @VikingBeardClubEngland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybearded #Instabeard #Diversity #Inclusion

The Vikings were a seafaring people who originated in Scandinavia between the late eighth and early eleventh centuries. Sailing from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden in their iconic longships, the Vikings embarked on extensive voyages and raids that reached as far as North America, Africa, and Asia. While the Vikings are often remembered for the brutal raids on European towns, monasteries, and cities that earned them a fearsome reputation as ruthless warriors, they were also shrewd traders and settlers who had a lasting cultural impact. The Vikings' superior naval technology, especially their shallow-drafted longships, allowed them to navigate difficult waters and launch surprise attacks. Their raids moved with devastating speed, making defense difficult for their victims. After swiftly looting, plundering, and burning settlements, the Vikings would take captives and disappear. In addition to raiding, the Vikings established extensive trade networks and settlements across Europe and beyond. Their interactions and settlements influenced the cultures of medieval Britain, Ireland, France, Russia and Iceland. Although their fierce raids left a violent legacy, the Vikings were also skillful navigators, traders, explorers, and settlers who played a significant role in shaping medieval European societies and culture. _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󐁧󐁢󐁥󐁮󐁧󐁿 VBCUK - English Clan @VikingBeardClubEngland 🏴󐁧󐁢󐁳󐁣󐁴󐁿 VBCUK - Alba Clan @VikingBeardClubscotland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ  @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybearded #Instabeard #Diversity #Inclusion

The word for “Friday” in Germanic languages (including English) is named after Frija, the Proto-Germanic goddess who is the foremother of Freya and Frigg. None of the other Germanic peoples seem to have spoken of Frija as if she were two goddesses; this approach is unique to the Norse sources. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that in the Norse sources we find a confusion as to which goddess this day should have as its namesake. Both Freyjudagr (from Freyja) and Frjádagr (from Frigg) are used. The names of the two goddesses are also particularly interesting in this regard. Freyja, “Lady,” is a title rather than a true name. It’s a cognate of the modern German word Frau, which is used in much the same way as the English title “Mrs.” In the Viking Age, Scandinavian and Icelandic aristocratic women were sometimes called freyjur, the plural of freyja.“Frigg,” meanwhile, comes from an ancient root that means “beloved.” Frigg’s name therefore links her to love and desire, precisely the areas of life over which Freya presides. Here again we can discern the ultimate reducibility of both goddesses to one another: one’s name is identical to the other’s attributes, and the other name is a generic title rather than a unique name. Clearly, then, the two are ultimately the same goddess. Why, then, are they presented as nominally distinct in the late Old Norse sources? Unfortunately, no one really knows. #Freya #Frjádagr #Freyja #Friggsday _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 VBCUK - English Clan @VikingBeardClubEngland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 VBCUK - Alba Clan @vikingbeardclubscotland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybearded #Instabeard #Diversity #Inclusion

In Stanza 16, Oðinn warns us that a man who avoids conflict will not find happiness or peace in later life; even if he escapes violence and/or injury. This is because he will always be tormented by his own lack of honour. On the other hand, a man who who faces danger and challenges will live a more fulfilling and meaningful life, even if he dies young or suffers wounds. In a more modern context, Stanza 16 can perhaps be interpreted as a metaphor for the pursuit of personal growth, adventure, or creativity. It may suggest that we have to be willing to go beyond our comfort zone, take risks, and not be afraid of failure and/or criticism. Because none of us will outrun old age. There will come a time when our minds are willing, but our bodies are unable. It is at this point when a peaceful life may begin to feel like an unfulfilled life. ________________________ "𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝!" 📖 #odinsday #óðinsdagr #wōdnesdæg #wednesdaywisday _________________________________ The Norse God Oðinn was known as Wōden in Old English. Vikings calling📣🛡 . Send any inspirational Viking style content to share as we are using that theme to bring awareness to a very important cause. My fiancé passed away this month last year from complications of ALS caused by a spine injury from vehicle accident. #pALS desperately need change in the medical industry to help them get the treatments and support they need, especially access to spine surgeries for proven damage on mri like my late fiancé had. It was so tragic to witness how he was DENIED surgical intervention that could have saved his life because of the associated diagnosis the insurance companies rate “untreatable” due to fatal prognosis. It’s a crime which is why I am an activist for medical reform with my #alsanswers org. I chose Vikings as the theme because in addition to our Nordic background, the history showed how Vikings often lived into their 80s if they survived battle. They knew how to set bones and use organic salves to heal injuries. Incidentally, the tea-tree sanitizer on our family line with @sisubeauty actually pulled my fiancé out of pneumonia on hospice 3x over 5 months. Hospice staff was shocked that using organics in the tracheostomy was vitally helpful. Earlier suction support and surgical intervention were the biggest needs that weren’t met, however. Since I am now aware of other surgical cases that reversed ALS, I am continuing on this battle to help others get the careplan they need.🛟 . #poweredbysisu #als #alsawareness #vikingsforacause #vikingsforlife #vikingpower #vikings #vikingsofinstagram #vikingsvalhalla #vikingshistory #vikingstrong #vikingmusic #eivør #eivor #eivormusic 🎶 @eivormusic

The Vikings' long, narrow longships, called langskip, contrasted with their shorter, wider merchant ships, called knarr or kaupskip. While the warships maintained a length-to-width ratio of 7:1, the merchant ships had deeper, heavier hulls to increase cargo capacity. The merchant ships relied more on their sails than oars for propulsion and had fixed masts. The largest longships were known as drekar or drakkar, indicating they belonged to nobles or kings. Their elaborate dragon-headed bows and sculpted sterns displayed status. Other common Viking ship motifs included snakes, eagles, rams, and hawks. More than axes or swords, the Vikings' flexible, durable drakkars were their key weapons. The ships enabled both trading voyages and raids, conferring great economic and social value. Through trade travels in the 7th-8th centuries, the Scandinavians familiarized themselves with future adversaries. Leveraging naval skills, they charted coasts, currents, and winds while locating prime ports and inland trade routes. These contacts provided intelligence on political, military, and economic strengths. In the past, most sails were red, which was thought to inspire awe and intimidate enemies. Poems from that era praise bright colors on sails, like blue covering the entire surface or in stripes. For example, the poem by Sigvat Skald describes King Knut sailing a ship with a blue sail. Ropes on ships were also made from diverse materials like plant fibers, seahorse skin, whale or seal skin, and horsehair. _______________________ 🇬🇧 Viking Beard Club UK™🪓 🌍 @vikingbeardclubuk 🔘 Yғɪʀᴍᴀðʀ @scots_viking_opie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 VBCUK - English Clan @VikingBeardClubEngland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 VBCUK - Alba Clan @VikingBeardClubscotland 🔘 Fóʟᴋʜᴀɢɪ @kingcolly8566 🔘 Eʀғɪɴɢɪ @alex_alansson 🔘 Hɪʀðɪʀ @chopperferg 🔘 Fæɢɪʀ @bearded.biking.viking 🔘 Vɪᴅʀᴍᴀðʀ @red_viking_crafts #VikingBeardClubUK #VikingBeardClub #VBCUK #TheBritishBeardClub #TBBC #Vikingfamily #Vikingshistory #BeardClub #BeardedBrotherhood #Brotherhood #VikingsofInstagram #NorseMythology #NorseLifestyle #VikingSoul #BeardLife #BeardsOfInstagram #BeardGang #BeardStyle #UKBeard #UKBeardScene #UKBeardCommunity #Staybear
