Today started off with some really good news (spoilers) which will become apparent soon To celebrate @plaguemantle and I learned Imhotep duel, a fun, quick little game about unloading boats and not noughts & crosses, surprisingly very strategic in how you play and counterplay. Then I went to Dice and Dumplings in Southampton to take part in their vintage cube for mtg, getting passed all the workings of a kiki-jiki combo deck and having a whale of a time with it And to top it all off, I found my rhinos magic deck that's been missing for 7-8, wins all round today. I guess we’ll see! Today we have Grave Titan in the Kaldheim Showcase frame from a Secret Lair. My biggest frustration is that Sun Titan is the ONLY Titan that doesn’t have a version in this frame. Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #51: Timeless Lotus! Timeless Lotus is a card that I added to facilitate a five-color theme in my Cube. It replaced other, previous five-mana mana rocks, such as Gilded Lotus, that would occasionally see play. It lets you cast some cool bangers like Two-Headed Hellkite, Jared Carthalion, and Niv-Mizzet Reborn. While it does come into play tapped, if it didn’t, it would basically be better than free, I just wish it came in an alternate frame... Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #50: Currency Converter! Despite not being a Commander player, one of my favorite things to do is look though each new set’s Commander cards to see which ones might be good for the Cube. Unfortunately, once a card says the word “commander” or “goad” I have to skip past it. Fortunately, Currency Converter says neither and is a fantastic addition. It’s a colorless looter and discard outlet, it actually puts the cards you loot away to good use, and you can fetch it with both Trinket Mage and Urza’s Saga. It hits so many great notes that I added it almost immediately after playing with it on Magic Online. Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #49: Vorinclex! I think most these new Praetors are pretty good. Vorinclex is a fantastic five-drop that draws you two Forests (ANY Forest) when he comes into play, and is also just a 6/6 with trample and reach. If you can flip him - which I have before, and it was backbreaking - the effects are pretty bonkers: put two creatures into play, add SEVEN +1/+1 counters, then fight the entire board! And then Vorinclex just comes back and gets you two more lands! These Praetors just have so much value packed into them. Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #48: Ascend from Avernus! One of white’s main strengths in the Cube is returning permanents from the graveyard to play. Cards like Sun Titan, Sevinne’s Reclamation, and Serra Paragon have all been staples at some point. I swapped one of those out for the rarely seen Ascend from Avernus. While it ends up being more expensive than something like Sevinne’s Reclamation, it also ends up being more of an end game haymaker. For white decks, X being four seems like the sweet spot, getting back nearly all of the good white planeswalkers and creatures, but casting this with X as two or three can be really effective as well! Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #47: Delighted Halfling! Green has access to a ton of one-mana ramp creatures. One thing I try to do is reduce redundancy in my Cube, which means I do have Llanowar Elves, but no Fyndhorn Elves or Elvish Mystic. Along with some of the other versatile one-drops, like Noble Hierarch or Ignoble Hierarch, Delighted Halfling fits right in. While it doesn’t make colored mana by default, making all of your planeswalkers or your legendary creatures uncounterable can be pretty clutch. Vintage Cube Card-a-Day #46: Reckless Stormseeker! Took about a week off, but now it’s time for more Vintage Cube cards! Reckless Stormseeker is a relatively new addition. Cards that give all your creatures haste are usually very strong, but you don’t want to play something like an enchantment that ONLY does that. Stormseeker does a great impression of a card like Fervor. Assuming you’re only playing one creature a turn, your creatures will always have haste, along with a spicy +1/+0, when they enter the battlefield. If Stormseeker is flipped, they’re getting an additional +1/+0 and trample. This is a really good deal for what is essentially a three-mana 3/3.
