Thank you to @makethislook and @iliveinmylab for #vintageyearinreview2023 I am late to the last post but- Goals for 2024 are- to dance more and spend time with wonderful people like these two. I was recommended to go to see the Art Deco Orchestra and it was fabulous! I'm also blessed to now be friends with these two- I remember seeing them from afar when I was early to the vintage scene. I thought they were the MOST beautiful people- and they are- inside and out. You never know where life will take you but honesty, kindness and openness- helps so much! To more dancing and fabulous people! šš #vintageclothing #1940s #1940sfashion #friends #dancing #vintageclothes #vintagehair #vintagelife
Happy 2024! Seeing so many posts for #vintageyearinreview and #sewingyearinreview, I could only wish to emulate themāas you can see, my year could easily be reviewed by a summary glance at my feed, so it was pointless. Yet I did more sewing and posting this year than Iād been able to in previous years, so hereās a brief gesture to the challenge: 1. Intro/2023 Overview: I came back, I sewed, I posted. 2. Best Acquisition: A photographer in one of my friends! You might think that I acquired the Rembrandty hat this year, but I actually got it a couple years ago. Iāve only managed to wear it recently because the elastic had snapped soon after I got it and I was skeptical and lazy about replacing it until last month. 3. New Appreciation: For the value of captions. 4. Lessons Learned: Do not use a rotary cutter on slippery silk (thanks to one of the ladies @lacismuseum ). Do not starch silk charmeuse. Do not wait 2 years to replace a hat elastic. 5. Achievements: Actually finishing a few garments. 6. Favourite Look of the Year: The suspender skirt/jumper. 7. Goals for 2024: #magam at a minimum #vintageyearinreview2023 #vintageyearinreview #vintagefashion #vintagestyle #historicalfashion #historybounding #vintagesewing #vintagehat #schoolgirl #flapper #1920s #1920sfashion #1990s #retrofashion #ladylike #artsy #beret #ruffles #pleats #suspenderskirt #1940shat #Rembrandt #frenchstyle #europeanstyle #portrait #portraitphotography #MarthaGene #welovecoco @welovecoco
#vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023: āGoals for 2024ā: One could judge me and deem I need more #MondayMotivation- #EyeoftheTiger- #CrossFitBootCamp- #TypeA for #NewYearNewMe!!! But I be like, Mehā¦Not dead-Not in jail-Not homeless-Dogs/Hubs fed-Found good vintageāCool, Iām golden lolšš½š¤š¾ It has been a tough year for many vintage sellers due to the damn algorithm and Etsyās downturn. I am SO grateful for my repeat customers, and every Like/Share/Comment that you have given to me and any other fellow sellers that you followš I was asked to try to muster up the courage to do live sales. But I hate being on camera; this vtg snailās still an old-skooler with my static postsšāLive sales tap into shoppersā impulses and sense of urgency; such a stark contradiction to my personal slow-fashion philosophy with selling vintage, although I can see why theyāve taken over... Regrettably I will likely have to be listing less, due to time constraints, since I need to spend more time on other interests and responsibilities. Vintage selling is not rocket science, but it is extremely time-consuming, especially on top of full-time day job. Thereās an over-saturation of sellers and staggering market/platforms, and itās getting harder (at least for me) to source vintage affordably to resell. But do not fret: I definitely still have tons more good stuff from da hoard to share with you!!!!! (just DM me!) And I will be doing local popups, and liquidating LOTS of 5-15 pieces on my neglected eBay account, seller ID ib_surfing. (or just DM me!) On a grander scale, what is most troubling to me is theocratic fascism in our country. Many things are currently unsatisfactory and uncertain, I know. But we MUST come together and vote those blatantly-eternally destructive f*ckers out in 2024. š¤
#vintageyearinreview2023 Favourite look of the year has to be this from @greyhoundvintage.. I wore it to Riviera Swing and I love it. Super comfortable, easy to dance in and fab detail. I love the detailing on the back too.. plus a fab lil cape from @scarletragevintage, @misslfire shoes plus other accessories thrifted from charity shops. Fabulous and here's to more outfits like this in 2024! #1940s #1940sfashion #dancing #vintagelife
Happy new year! My goals for this year are to continue sewing, knitting and generally making things as much as my health allows. I'm currently working on a pink dress that Joan wears on Mad Men for Valentine's day. I'm going to embellish a plain pink dress with lace roses and sequins, rather than use printed fabric like in the photo (pic 6). It would also be awesome to make some The Nanny looks, a Barbie look, I want to make a suit from the movie Carol, maybe some more Mrs Maisel and The Love Witch, and I might try making this dress Peggy wears for Easter. What do you think? Which ideas do you like the best? Photos are all from pinterest. #vintageyearinreview2023 part two. My favorite hawaiian dress make for Viva. Plus, it's red, my favorite color. I have a serious love for border print fabric and kitchy rockabilly print fabric.. my stash is getting out of hand š¤£
#vintageyearinreview2023 part one. I definitely sewed a lot this year. I tend to sew a lot when I'm stressed out. And boy, this year has been a year.. My favorite sew of the year would have to be the society dress. Made in a mustard stretch velvet sequin. It's one of the hardest dresses I have ever sewn. I did 4 mock-ups of it and still wasn't happy with the fit. My second favorite would have to be the 40s velvet gown I made. I still need to redo it and fix some fit issues, but I still love it. I always try to sew more basic things so I can actually wear it daily, but I always end up just wanting to make gowns š and my third favorite make of this year would have to be my leopard Rita dress. Definitely the most easiest thing I've ever made, but it's right up there with the society dress. Because it's leopard? LOL, plus very comfortable.
#vintageyearinreview2023 but is not very Vintage.. Achievements! I have done well blending vintage life with agility shows with my dogs. They have done well too! Chutney won classes and surprised me, Pavlova got some clears- her first summer out! Always with a hair flower in my hair! #chinesecrested #agility #winning #vintagelife #chinesecrestedpowderpuff
#vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 āAchievementsā: Hmm, disclaimer: I did mention in my intro that Iām a vtg snail šLol a.k.a., not really a high achiever. Well. Earlier this year, just for #slacktivism shits ān giggles, I got 800 āTrĆ»mp is Toastā stickers made (Thanks to my friends @classicsandiego and @bigtoeart referring me to UPrinting for great rates, if you ever want to do something similar). I gave most of them away, stuck them on public bathrooms and trash cans whenever I was able to remember, and listed them on my Etsy purely for the purposes of wider geographic distribution. And they ended up coast-to-coast: from the Deep South on up as far as Toronto. I got some laughs, had some nice like-minded conversations, and no Mš¼Gš¼ dÄath threatsā¦So that Iāll consider an achievement. In recent months I finally hit the ground running on repairing, revamping, and creating jewelry from much of my long-hoarded broken and random pieces; executing my longtime project ideas/plans/desires, mostly inspired by Wartime era styles. Itās a compromise, as I lack the free time to do both clothes listing and making stuffānot to mention staying on top of adulting responsibilitiesā¦ I spent 2023 paying off my medical bill from getting my uterus cut open just over a year ago, so gotta say thatās my greatest achievement of the year. Anyone who has purchased anything from me has helped with this feat, so I want to express to you my utmost gratitude. ā¤ļø
My favourite look for the year was my Joan Christmas dress. I know I've only just posted it, but I love it so much! I'm so happy at how much it looks like the one she wears on Mad Men! I hope to create more of Joan's looks next year! #vintageyearinreview2023 is kindly hosted by @iliveinmylab and @makethislook #vintageyearinreview #madmen #joanholloway #madmenstyle #joanhollowaystyle #madmenfashion
Lessons learned: All good things come to those who wait. While selling off vintage that doesnāt flatter, I was able to score this 1930ās mohair sweater! Just the right amount of warmth in the pink to make me glow š Deco earrings from @luxulite #truevintageootd #mohairsweater #1930sfashion #vintagelife #1930smohair #vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 #pinup #pincurls #vintagestyle #lessonslearned @iliveinmylab @makethislook @holliepoint
The biggest lesson I learned in 2023 is letting go. 1- Letting go of so much vintage that was taking up space in my home, unloved. 2- Letting go of perfectionism and starting to post my genuine daily outfits, instead of waiting for special occasions (and therefore never posting). 3- Letting go of the need for safety and routine in favour of adventure and opportunity. 4- Letting go of people who mean a lot to me because our paths were no longer intertwined. 5- Letting go of fear and having faith that everything will work out exactly as it should. The fourth prompt for #vintageyearinreview is ālessons learnedā š Thank you to @iliveinmylab and @makethislook for hosting this challenge š #styleevolution #personalgrowth #vintageyearinreview2023 #vintagecommunity #casualvintage
Today's #vintageyearinreview2023 is Lessons learned. The biggest thing I have learnt is that my gut instinct is rarely wrong and I need to listen to it! Also- that I have the most awesome friends. They are all different, often wonderfully weird but perfect for me. This year has taught me who my friends are- this is both surprising and lovely. Here's to spending more time with glorious people in 2024! This photo was taken at @twinwoodfestival where we just had a hilarious time! Being silly with friends is the best! ā¤ļø #friends #1940s #twinwoods #1940sfashion #fun #beingsilly
#vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 āLessons Learnedā: Oof, this oneās heavy, yāall. I may or may not be a dumbass, because it seems I have to learn the same lessons time and time again throughout my life; and the older I get, the more disturbing re-learning becomes, because I expect better from people now that weāre all grownups. But the normalization and coddling of narcissism in our society, combined with economic resentment/the āhave vs. have-notsā struggling state of our country*āis leading to more hostility from those who refuse to see broader perspectives beyond their own vainglory and/or deep-seated insecurities. So my lesson learned: Avoid being baited into conflict with people who respond to truth with toxicity, rather than with thoughtful dialogue and humility. āš¾ *Google the short articles, āThe Danger of Resentment and Social Exclusionā and āWhich Comes First, Resentment or Narcissism? Sometimes the Egg Eats the Chickenā
One achievement this year was learning how to make hats. I buy pdf patterns on etsy and mostly use stuff I have on hand to make them. Here are all the ones I sewed this year! To improve on them I think I should make/buy some pressing tools so that the edges are crisper. This year I have had new appreciation for dancing and the importance of appropriate vintage for it! Loving starting ballroom with @supastudios_ before taking it to events. Then Balboa is always a fast track to happiness! 2024 will certainly include much more dancing! I'm only in my early dancing career but let's go! š„³š„³ #vintageyearinreview2023 #vintage #balboa #dancing #ballroom #1940s #1940sfashion
#vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 āNew Appreciationā: Noisy jewelry!š Of course Iāve always loved the look of #banglestacks, but coming across any for my small wrists was discouraging. For that reason, Iāve only ever had the same five boring bakelite maidens, and only wore them once in a blue moon. And whenever Iāve picked up bangles throughout my life thrifting, I never considered collecting, and usually gave them away or sold them at pop-ups. But this year, I went to a yard sale of a serious bangle collector, and got some awesome pieces that I really wanted to wear, but they all slid right off my hand. So I then bit the bullet and purchased a good collection-building quantity from @saucerbanglesāthe one and only maker Iāve been able to come across that has everything I was after: the classic bakelite-era aesthetics; high artisan quality; very reasonable price point; AND maiden size offeringsš„° (Not to mention how much I admire this 2-woman show) These beauties have made it really easy to get over my long weird hang-up of wearing noisy jewelry: Itās nice finally not limiting myself to just metal cuffs, and enjoying my own personal wrist renaissance! š° Sadly these looks are only for the weekendsāI cannot conduct my day job properly in stacks, nor can I get away with being that clinkety-clankety bitch in the office where you can hear a pin dropš Please feel free to tag me on any vtg/ #bakelitebangles for sale with 2.25ā to 2-3/8ā diameter openings! šš½
The third prompt for the #VintageYearInReview is about ānew appreciationā and in my case, itās about appreciating what I already have. I have been on a pretty serious campaign to only knit with yarn in my stash, rather than buying more stuff. Thankfully, there are plenty of WWII era knitting patterns that were designed for exactly this mindset. A famous phrase of that time was āUse It Up, Wear It Out, Make it Do, or Do Withoutā and thatās what Iām striving to do. š§¶š§¶š§¶ #vintageyearinreview2023 #vintageknitting
This year my new appreciation is for fashion, sewing and knitting challenges on instagram. I've participated in a lot since I started posting regularly since April this year. I'm late to the game for #vintageyearinreview so I'll be combining a few things in this post. Firstly, an introduction. I'm Emily, the owner of @atthesignofthegoldenscissors and the line of Larkin and Smith 18th Century sewing patterns. I am also the human behind Emily's VintageVisions and @shopemilysvintagevisions . There is a challenge that goes along with research and learning of skills to create historical clothing and accessories that I really enjoy and I love sharing what I find with others. Along with 18th century sewing I enjoy creating pieces based on or inspired by the 1930s and 1940s. I'm also passionate about women's military history so you can often find me at WWII events representing the women who served as WAVES or USMCWR. Educational displays are one of my favorite things to put together for living history events. If I'm not doing something related to history you will either find me working in the garden or snuggling with one of my cats drinking tea and watching Stargate SG1, Firefly or some old Hollywood classic like The Philadelphia Story. Best Acquisition for 2023. It's hard to pick one thing but I would have to say this 18th century gown bodice is pretty high on the list. It's been reworked and has seen better days but it still has so much to offer! I look forward to having students see it up close during my 2024 round of gown workshops. New Appreciation for 2023. I have to admit, offering a workshop and teaching in a more formal setting was a big step for me this year and not just for the business. I have a much greater appreciation for what it takes not only to organize a workshop but also for what it takes to be the one running the show. It's rewarding work even though it has its stressful moments. š #costumingyearinreview2023 #vintageyearinreview2023 #atthesignofthegoldenscissors #emilysvintagevisions #shopemilysvintagevisions #historicalsewing #livinghistory #educationaldisplays #womeninlivinghistory
This year I gained a new appreciation āmy girliesā. I started again drawing loose fashion sketches of the glam looks I saw at vintage events. I do these partly for appreciation during the events, and after for recovering from the glamour hangover. Perhaps it was Covid, perhaps it was fear of not being perfect, or just the toll of the grind. I stopped drawing āmy girliesā as my sister calls them. And I missed them. This year I started back up again. I tried it with markers, a medium I was never comfortable in before. Sometimes the proportions are off, sometimes the heads/hands/feet are drawn terribly, sometimes they turn out utterly fantastic. Plus a big thank you to these fantastic ladies who helped boost my confidence with inspiration and support. In 2024 I want to embrace this side of me even more. If you find me squinting at you, I dig your style. #vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 @iliveinmylab #vintagestyle #vintagestylenotvintagevalues #vintageshowgirl #fashionsketch

Hello Dahlings š¤š Iāve got a penchant for dark dramatic vintage fashion thatās dripping in statement costume jewelry. Iām Marisa, a sailing, vintage fashionista, and artist. My name is Cat and I love vintage and crafting, especially sewing and knitting. I'm housebound and an ambulatory wheelchair user and have a gorgeous cat named Cassius. I started posting in Instagram this year because I was sick of coming to the end of the year and not remembering anything I had done! I wanted a way to easily document my makes. Hi, Iām Raquel and Iām joining in #vintageyearinreview #vintageyearinreview2023 This is my second year with this challenge. Iām loving vintage patterns more and more. From modern recreations to original vintage patterns. I love this #rockwelldress @julie_eilber for @cashmerette and Iāve made it a few times. They are a bit over the top in the fabric choice, rainbow check and gold lame, but they fit my retirement wardrobe.
