This is the second skirt I made from my new block pattern. I pegged the hem very slightly for this skirt, added a kick pleat and slanted, double welt pockets. The skirt is a vintage woolen that I had one yard of, and I had to work around several moth holes, but I managed to avoid all but one that wound up near the back side seam/hem. I pulled threads from a scrap and repaired that while doing all the other hand finishing. The pockets are lined in some vintage Pierre Cardin lining that you’ll see again soon, as I’ve used it in the two projects I cut with this one as well - every time I look at it I hear “This is one of my Pierre Cardin socks!”, which I don’t foresee ever stopping. Points to anyone who gets THAT reference. Yesterday I painted another of my mini vintage sewing notions canvases - 4” x 4”. As before, the items ( except the envelope!) were a recent purchase from @vintagemarystroud - the shiny little thimble, the wooden cotton reels and the piece of linen fabric. I have a weakness for all these little items - I think it’s partly nostalgia but also social history. I’m sure not many people do enough stitching nowadays to use a thimble, and I know many people will replace rather than repair their belongings. One of my favorite events to attend (when my work schedule allows it) are Beatles tribute concerts, and this past Friday I had the most amazing experience seeing the @fabfourband for the first time in many years. Of course I also had to do the insane thing and attempt a quick vintage style dress using some Beatles-themed cotton I had in my stash. In case you were wondering, yes, I was sewing right up to the last minute when I had to leave the house, while dealing with all sorts of obstacles that included (but not limited to) a finicky sewing machine and my poor dress form that is on its last legs. 😂 I used Vogue pattern 2960 for my dress because I loved the full skirt and the open back design of the dress. What I did not really love were the vague instructions for some of the construction parts, but I was able to improvise in the end. This is the second Vogue pattern I have used, and out of all of the patterns I have tried so far, Vogue seems to have the bodice that fits me the best. The dress ended up being really comfortable to wear too, which made commuting on the train a breeze as I made my way to the concert! I also included some photos I took of the band, and I also cannot help but admire their Sgt. Pepper’s costumes, which if I remember correctly, are custom made. Since the theme for this year’s sewing adventures involve passion projects, in addition to the “Breathe” dress from Ever After, I will also finally take the time to sew my own Sgt. Pepper’s costume. Also if you’re a Beatles fan and the Fab Four are in your area, I highly recommend going to see them. Here is my version of the Melilot shirt/blouse by Deer & Doe and my second entry for the #sewaprilblouse24 Melilot is such a great pattern. It has lovely elements like the curved hem, dropped shoulder short sleeves, and adorable rounded collar. Due to the small floral pattern on this fabric, some of the features, like the pockets are not as visible, or perhaps the photos don't do them justice. Despite being a casual shirt, it is slightly tailored at the waist and with its deep curved hemline it creates a beautiful shape when worn untucked. The hem turned out to be quite lengthy though, so I might shorten the lenght a little bit next time. Otherwise, I think this is one of my favorite patterns. This A-like skirt is made with a pattern from 1970 (see last slide). I have used a 100%cotton bed linen I bought at the thrift store. I have dyed it black. Interestingly, one half of the linen came out a little lighter than the other. It is not overly obvious but in certain lights, it is. I actually really like it! I was also very happy that, using bed linen, I could utilise some of the previous sewing, for example in the front. As belt, I have attached a vintage piece of embroidery I found on Etsy from Germany (see 2nd picture). The skirt has a zipper in the back, which is a dead stock from the 1970s. This zipper is from the same batch as the ones I used in my shiny pants. For summer, this skirt is fantastic. However, if i want to wear tights underneath, I need to also wear an underskirt for the fabric to not cling to my legs uncomfortably. In this picture, I have styled the skirt with the sweater I made in the post before. Together, they create a distinctly 60s silhouette. This machine is also from 1934 - Cait's grandma picked him up with the table at a thrift store in 1957, refurbished it, and quilted on it right up until she passed in 1998 and it was found a new home with Cait. Long time no see. Chronic migraine has made this month really aweful, so far 6 days without any and then it's life lifeing with mow energy levels. Just like @miss_m_vintage, I had an event yesterday which I made a new dress for, finishing it 2 hours before leaving out the door. The 110th birthday party (50 & 60 respectively) was a nice way to take the dress out for it's first spin. I spent last Sunday drafting the pattern for the dress that I originally wanted to make and realised on Monday that the piece of fabric I had wasn't enough to fit all the pattern pieces. I then opted to make this dress pattern instead, McCall number 7128. I have been sewing on it during the week inbetween migraines to get it done in time. No pattern matching, as I didn't have enough fabric and also had to puzzled together tulip sleeves out of the remnants. A statement Clara dress 💙 I bought and toiled the Clara dress by @silversagapatterns last fall after the pattern was released, but when temperatures dropped, I switched to wearing trousers, and the actual dress never got made until now. I've been on a mission to sew pre-planned summer dresses early this summer, which I have been quite prolific at. 😎 However, the weather has not cooperated, with Finland experiencing a very unusual resurgence of winter in late April. So, photographing them (and wearing them) has been a challenge, but it's finally looking a bit like spring! Anyways, I did some hacks for this dress: - I separated the bodice and skirt into different pieces. - I flared the skirt as far as my fabric width allowed. - I used the bodice piece with the lower neckline for the front and back. - I added two rows of shirring in between the elastic channels at the bodice. I love how this dress turned out! The fabric is a lightweight mystery cotton from the bargain bin. I feel like it was meant for this dress. It is very comfortable on, and the hacks make it perfect to me.
