🇬🇧 (🇨🇿👇) 🇲🇰 Ohrid = The Pearl of the Balkans 🤩 The Lake Ohrid amazed me just from pictures. But the reality even exceeded my expectations. It´s definitely one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. 😍 I felt 💯 safe even I travelled solo. We’ve been to visit our friends @monasterywinery again and we are beyond excited about what this season has in stall for our businesses! We are working on a project that will make our guests stay even better and can’t wait to share the news with you. But in addition to our little plans we were also introduced to what Stefan the wine maker and his team have been up to since our last visit. As this is a boutique Winery we see that their flexibility and playfullnes is so very present in everything they do. In fact Stefan met some people coming down from the mountains in Galicica with these big bags and he asked them what they were carrying. It turned out that some of the major global gin companies are buying wild juniper hand picked in Galicica national park as a-posed to farm grown juniper from India. So he started to investigate and knowing he could use his rakija distillation machine he got to it! Macedonias love their Sideritis better known as mountain tea with all its health benefits so he added that and another two wild local plants often used for tea. He went to his backyard and found lavender, thyme, coriander seeds and as many local ingredients that he could think to improve flavor and got to it. He distilled the gin four times to strengthen and purifiy the spirit. To produce a distilled gin this base spirit must be redistilled with the chosen botanicals to extract their essential oils and to flavour the base spirit. And now Monastery Winery have produced their own gin and it couldn’t be more local and organic and nothing makes out hearts happier! On your next visit to Monastery Winery please make sure that they serve you some of their local gin, it was absolutely delicious! The other night we were lucky enough to be invited to our friends at Villa Norvegia for a wonderful home cooked meal We’ve been blessed to stay at Villa Norvegia on several occasions and we can not speak highly enough of the lovely hosts and the beautiful property! This property is unique in so many aspects. To our knowledge it’s amongst the largest you can find in Ohrid old town, in fact it has 8 generous bedrooms all with balconies sleeping 16+ guests comfortably, it has 5 bathrooms, a wonderful open dining/kitchen/living room area designed for entertaining. The house even has a separate kitchen, and a wonderful garden which is quite a rarity in Ohrid old town. Everything about this place exceeds quiet luxury! Like the wonderful handmade furniture, floors brought in from Switzerland, amazing antique pieces brought in from Norway and it doesn’t take long to realize that the hosts are big art collectors whom even run an art gallery in Scandinavia. The property is 500 m2 but it still has a warm and cosy feel to it due to the owners extended use of beautiful brick walls, art work, handmade rugs, bookshelves etc And we totally forgot to mention the view! Every bedroom overlooks the Ohrid lake and it truly is breathtaking. We had the opportunity to visit Saint Naum Monastery during our visit to Lake Ohrid, so we jumped at the chance to see more of Macedonia. The drive from Ohrid took around 40 minutes, and was winding and narrow but the views are incredible! As soon as we arrived we were blown away by how spectacular the area is. The monastery was smaller than we expected and only took 30 minutes to see everything, but still very beautiful. Though, this was not the star attraction of the area for us. We were told that there was a crystal clear river here and we found a hiking trail that lead you to a scenic point at the top of the springs via 3 churches. The trail followed the river and took around 45 minutes from the monastery to last church, but also passed a cool abandoned caravan park which we loved exploring! You can get a boat ride up to the springs but you don’t get the same views of the mountains, plus you don’t get to see or go into the churches. You also get to see more of the Macedonia rural life. The beach of Saint Naum was also stunning and the water so clear. It felt like we were on the coast and not on a lake! Only a short drive from Ohrid you find Struga So near yet so different. We highly recommend a day there. Struga means river bed and is parted into the western and eastern part by the river Drin.
