The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Friday condemned reports from Iran of increasingly strict enforcement of the state's mandatory hijab laws for women and girls, and a report of a new draft bill that would impose severe punishments on those found guilty of violating the law. Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia, in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack, two U.S. military officials told The Associated Press. The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv arguing that the tanks, which cost about $10 million apiece, were vital to its ability to breach Russian lines. But the battlefield has changed substantially since then, notably by the ubiquitous use of Russian surveillance drones and hunter-killer drones. Those weapons have made it more difficult for Ukraine to protect the tanks when they are quickly detected and hunted by Russian drones or rounds. Burkina Faso has temporarily suspended the programs of Voice of America and BBC/Africa following the broadcast of news stories about a Human Rights Watch report accusing the Burkinabè army of abuses against civilian populations. The Superior Council of Communication Thursday ordered the immediate halt of the rebroadcasts and suspension of the programs of both international radio stations for two weeks. The April 25, 2024 order which will span two weeks, seeks to reduce access to VOA’s website and digital platforms, and censor VOA coverage related to allegations of human rights abuses by the Burkinabè army against civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Friday that Russia's capture of a major nuclear power plant threatened a radiation catastrophe, as the country marked the anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) in southern Ukraine in the first days of its 2022 invasion. Both sides regularly accuse each other of endangering safety at the site, Europe's largest nuclear facility. "For 785 days now, Russian terrorists have held the Zaporizhzhia NPP hostage," Zelenskyy said on social media. Friday at the thrift!!! I found so much art that I needed for certain spaces of my home. Some of it is especially gorgeous—the quiet mountain scene and the Buddha watercolor sketch are my favorite. I also found some great linens; like silverware, our dish clothes always go missing, so I grabbed the two striped that looked brand new, plus an embroidered hankie and a nice cotton blanket. Because summer is upon us I have been more into the clothing sections recently, so I grabbed some beautiful summer dressed and shorts. Lastly, I found a lot of miscellany, including a pretty corningware casserole dish (my kids do not eat my cooking, or anyone’s actually, so it’s the perfect size for two), a rough looking Pyrex mixing bowl which I love anyway, some egg cups (!!!) and even some books. Cette décision, prise le 25 avril 2024, fait suite à la diffusion par ces médias d'un article accusant sans fondement l'armée #burkinabè d'exactions sur les populations civiles. Le CSC a dénoncé dans un communiqué "des déclarations péremptoires et tendancieuses contre les Forces de défense et de sécurité (FDS) du Burkina sans fondement". Ces accusations graves, relayées par des médias internationaux de grande envergure, portent atteinte à l'image de l'armée burkinabè et mettent en danger la sécurité nationale. Face à la gravité de ces accusations et à leur diffusion irresponsable, le CSC a décidé de prendre des sanctions fermes. La suspension des programmes de la BBC et de la VOA vise à dissuader la diffusion de telles informations mensongères et à protéger la cohésion nationale. En plus de la suspension des programmes radio, le CSC a également ordonné le blocage des sites internet de la BBC, de la VOA et de l'ONG Human Rights Watch (HRW) sur le territoire national. Le message du CSC est clair : la liberté d'expression ne saurait s'affranchir de la responsabilité et du respect de la vérité. Burkina Faso Military Regime Suspends BBC, Voice Of America Over Report Of Massacre Of Children, Others The military government of Burkina Faso has recently taken the decision to suspend the operations of two prominent global media organizations, BBC and Voice of America. This action follows their reporting on the shocking massacre of 223 civilians, including at least 56 children. According to Human Rights Watch, the massacre, which occurred in February 2024, is considered one of the most severe army abuses in Burkina Faso since 2015. It is believed to be part of a larger military campaign targeting civilians accused of collaborating with Islamist armed groups. SaharaReporters has stated that Human Rights Watch has described these killings as potentially constituting crimes against humanity.
