Managed and assessed on a fine spacial scale ✔️ The survey method used in our fishery involves laying transect lines in random locations within commercial geoduck beds. The article highlights the uncertainty that our fishery, and all commercial fisheries in BC, are facing as a result of marine protected areas. “At this point, the UHA has “no confidence” that the MPAs will be implemented with any considerations for the fisheries”. The financial impact of the marine protected area in the Northern Shelf Bio-Region could result in the loss of more than CAD 130 million on fisheries in BC. “One of the parts of the ordeal that stings is the fishery’s low impact on the surrounding environment and high amounts of data available on its sustainability, geoducks are harvested individually by divers that swim to the bottom and grab members of the species by hand. An awesome few days at the Seafood Expo North America in Boston co-exhibiting with our friends @bcspotprawns! A huge thank you to @robert_clark_64 and @chefjulianbond for all of your hard work preparing our geoduck and spot prawn samples. And for always being fantastic advocates for our sustainable fisheries. On top of growing the awareness for geoduck and spot prawns and collecting leads with buyers around the world, we had the chance to network with various government officials. During our time at the show, we met with the Minister of Rural Economic Development, Gudie Hutchings, to discuss our growing concerns over the closures in the Northern Shelf Bio-Region. We also sat down with the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence Macaulay, to thank him for all of our marketing government funding. And finally, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier, she got the chance to sample geoduck and learn all about our stock assessment and the sustainability behind our fishery. 🏈 🏈 Step up your game day event party with a feast of irresistible seafood delights! Try skewering and BBQ'ing shrimp or go fancier with our Crispy Coconut Shrimp, both featuring the Tropical Blue Shrimp. 🦐 Coconut Shrimp Ingredients: Vegetable oil, for frying 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup corn starch Pinch cayenne Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 cups of shredded sweetened coconut 1 lb Tropical Blue Shrimp, peeled and tails removed Sweet chili sauce, for dipping Instructions: Heat about two inches of oil in a heavy bottom pot over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350 F. Meanwhile, put the eggs in one shallow dish. Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, cayenne, 2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Transfer half the flour mixture to a third bowl and stir in the coconut. Working in batches, dredge the shrimp in the flour mixture, shake off any excess, dip in the eggs and then roll in the coconut mixture, pressing to coat thoroughly. Fry until golden, 2 to 3 minutes adjusting the heat as needed to maintain the oil temperature. Transfer the shrimp to paper towels to drain. Serve with sweet chilli sauce on the side for dipping or mix mayonnaise and hot sauce. 🦐 Barbecued Tropical Blue Shrimp Tails Thaw and peel the shrimp leaving tails on, put them on skewers either soaked bamboo or metal, be sure to use gloves or tongs when using metal skewers, as they get hot. Grill the shrimp over direct, medium heat for 5-7 minutes, turning the shrimp halfway through the process. The outside of the shrimp should turn a nice pink colour when it is cooked while the meat inside should be white and opaque. Remove from the skewers and serve with either the dipping sauces from the Coconut Shrimp recipe or Seafood Cocktail sauce.
