Secretive and expert at hiding, spotted salamanders are active only at night. During the day, they hide under rocks, leaf debris and logs. Most spotted salamanders do not survive to adulthood, but those who do live for about 20 years, with some living as long as 30 years! These kids rock! Members of the Granby Land Trust Youth Conservation Corps, along with a good showing of GLT members, came out in force on Sunday afternoon to help maintain the trails 🥾⛏️ at the Dismal Brook Wildlife Preserve in North Granby. The day was cold and the work was dirty, but that didn’t slow this crew down 🔥! They worked on improving the trails, building stone walkways over wet areas, installing and cleaning out water gutters to redirect seasonal waterflow, and did general maintenance to improve the trail experience. We are so grateful 🙏 for our volunteers — especially these kids — for their willingness to spend 2+ hours of their weekend giving back to the community. GOT TRUCK? We are looking for a used truck to love. Our old pickup has died, leaving us with no way to safely move our crew around the farm, or to transport the harvest up to the CSA Barn. This is not great news on the heels of 2023, when soaking rains caused crop damage and forced us to dip into reserves we were building for just such a purchase. Did you ever wonder how the tiny black-capped chickadee can survive on extremely cold nights like tonight? Amazingly, they are able to lower their body temperature as much as 12-15 degrees from their normal 108 degrees Fahrenheit – a feat that is quite unusual in birds.
