Today was a big day There are several days in the year that are big for the farm. Spring splitting of the beehives is one of them. It is part of the care of the bees for a couple reasons: 1. It manages numbers in the hive to prevent swarming (half the hive and the queen leaving) and gives them enough room to sustainably grow the hive. 2. By preventing the bees taking off to the wild we can ensure their survival and health (remember honey bees are agricultural animals, not native wild bees) Bonus to us is the ability to multiply hives. While I didn’t add more hives myself this year, the nucs (small hives) will go to good homes to continue growing into healthy hives. This was all new to me several years ago, which is why I like to share so you can be learning too! We live in a place where our boat is a tractor. This boat transports calves, horses, hay, side-by-sides, and so much more. It allows us to have free range cattle on a nearby island that provides self sustaining beef. Our main season lambing wrapped up yesterday with an 8# black ram lamb from yearling Clara, sired by Etienne. The lamb was born posterior, with his back feet coming out first. This presentation can be tricky; the anatomical angles of the lamb and the ewe don’t always line up, and when pulled, the lamb's ribs can sometimes be crushed against the ewe's pelvis (I have since learned that large backwards lambs should be rotated a quarter turn to prevent this from happening). Soon after I pulled the lamb out, I noticed that his ribcage folded in half each time he inhaled. I hadn’t rotated him, and now is ribs were broken. I did everything I could think of that might help, but he only ever lay limp in the hay. Hours went by. I was starting to consider what the humane option was when he finally staggered up. As the evening went on, he gained strength, and by nightfall he was bouncing around the lambing jug as if nothing was wrong. In all ways, this lambing season was the best and worst one yet. The flock suffered some devastating losses early in the season, only to be followed by what felt like effortless births from almost everyone else. There are 23 healthy lambs in the barn and they all look excellent, with strong legs, broad chests, long torsos and bright, alert eyes. All of the first time moms have been perfect; attentive and patient and milky. As devastating as it is to loose a ewe or lamb during lambing season, I believe that, in a way, it also serves the flock. When loss occurs, I first ask myself what I could have done differently, but then I consider what factors contributed to the situation in the first place. All of the sheep have access to the same baseline of hay, minerals, and supplements. From there, this lambing season saw most of the sheep thrive and a few falter. It’s heartbreaking, and mistakes happen. But lambing losses can serve to expose genetic traits that ultimately aren't the right fit for our operation. Clara’s ram demonstrates the best of this idea: through no fault of his own (in fact, through one of mine), the scene was set for this lamb to die. And yet here he is, perservering. These are the kinds of sheep we want to keep around.

Happy chickens and happy horses today. Every morning we move the chickens in their mobile pens (known as chicken tractors) onto fresh ground and they love it. They rush to the front of the pen as we move it and eagerly eat the fresh grass and search for bugs. This is also a time of preening and lots of chatter. Our chickens live by the natural rhythms of daylight, they have constant access to sunshine (if it's there) while also being sheltered and safe from predators and rough weather. They love it when the sun shines, they stretch out and literally sunbathe. They live in small groups, and have constant access to organic feed and water. Their healthy lives are reflected in their appearance, lots of feathers, bright red combs, and bright yellow legs with no sores which can often occur with chickens raised in more intense systems. The high welfare of our birds means they provide us with delicious looking and tasting meat. It was also trimming day for the horses, they were all (mostly) well behaved and now have nice neat feet again. The sight of all the horses in the yard with the goats in the barn because we've had and are due lots of rain, is my dream come true. Plus the swallows have been checking out the barn today, really hope they make it their home. I dreamt of having my animals and my home in one place as a child and every step of my life from the age of about 16 has lead me to this point and my inner child goes yippee with moments like today. With the three ewes that are still to lamb looking like they were caught on a second cycle (not bad when you consider we asked each tup to cover 14 or 15 in a 3 day window), the cattle have taken over. Swinden, the second calf born here on the farm when we first started with cattle, has had her own first calf this week. No issues at all - we simply found them together at the evening check. Named Widdop Raven, she's a black heifer and is very lively, preferring to follow the herd around rather than just hiding in the rushes all day.
