Hi, my name is Nick Vorstermans, (fun fact, in middle Dutch this translates to Forest man!) I do really come from a family of woods people. My great great grandfather was in the forestry industry in the Netherlands, my Grandfather worked for a door manufacturer which is why he immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands and my Dad trained to be a furniture maker (but never pursued it as a career) So I guess I can say woodworking is in my blood 🪚🪵🩸 I've been working wood since 2008 when I began my woody education in British Columbia at BCIT and took a fine furniture/cabinet making course. I quickly realized which side of the industry I fit into (hint, it wasn't the mass manufactured side) and luckily got a job with a furniture maker. From there I worked with many makers, building kitchens, furniture and other bits. All the while taking on commissions in my spare time. This led to me starting my own business, which is what I always wanted to do. Fast forward to 2017 and I attended @msoa_craft and studied and got my MA (something I never thought I'd do) Currently I'm based in Manchester and collect the majority of my materials from storm fallen trees or when someone cuts a tree down for safety reasons. Often collected by bicycle and trailer 🪵🚲. I've made many things from wood, including: bowls, spoons, kitchens, shelves, tables, chairs, bar stools, bars, cladding and a bunch more things. Really I just love wood as a material, learning new techniques and use this as my creative outlet. There's more to my story of course, but that's enough for one post 😂. It’s @find.amaker week. This is a little hello to all my new followers and to those who have been following me for some time. Thank you for showing such support in my work. I am Tammy, I design & make freestanding and fitted furniture, along with homewares and other bespoke projects. I have run my own furniture making business since 2018. I have recently made a big move out of Bristol and relocated to Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor, Devon. My partner Pi over at @clandestine.cc makes custom steel bicycles. We were very fortunate to find two great workshops right next to each other in the heart of the craft town Bovey Tracey. Home of the Craft Festival. Whilst running our own companies we are also doing up our grade 2 listed house at the top of the town, have a ginger cat called Houmous and are really enjoying being closer to the woods, hills, rivers and sea. My craft approach blends traditional techniques with modern designs and tools. My background in spatial design has led me to focus on ergonomics, alongside that strong visual style. I believe in making sustainable & durable pieces with a high level of attention to detail and finish. I strongly believe in supporting local resources, the quality and labour of love in handmade items. I feel that items should be long term investments, crafted and cared for with the intent to become antiques.

Uh, hello there! I’ve been busy, but lagging on posting photos of my finished work. I recently swapped back to Sony Alpha series from the Fuji setup. I missed the low light performance and all the glass potential. So I should be more consistent! But on to this project! I wanted to challenge myself to go from unmilled wood to finished product in a single day. Which meant keeping the design simple and not scope creeping in new ideas. The plan was a storage shelf to hold our N+1 collection of mugs. I used spalted black maple and curly maple. The measurements were based on the widest and tallest mugs we had. One shelf for the tall mugs and the rest able to accommodate our larger mugs. Overall the project went smoothly! @aa_ron_lopez gave me some tips on how to measure out the shelf spacing while accounting for the kerf and board thickness. I leave for Japan on Thursday. My current commission is a dining table with English elm top and walnut base. After joining and planing the elm boards for the top I need to change the HSS “quick change “ Esta knives. The elm will dull HSS to barely usable in a matter of a few passes. The issue here is the Esta knife inserts as well as the Felder inserts are not being made to spec anymore. I have spoke to both companies and they have no explanation. I know it’s not wear on the knife holders because I keep old knives around and they are tight to the location stubs on the holders. These new knives, I have sets from both companies, are a bit sloppy and move around quite a bit, but only on either end of the holders not in the center. Anyway these are no longer “quick change”. Every time I change the knives now I have reset the heights. In order to consistently locate top dead center I made a quick jig with magnets and a piece of wood that slide between them that stops the blade at the appropriate spot for top dead center. This least speeds up the process a little while I adjust the heights. Anyone else have this issue with the #Felder knife system or #Esta knives? I imagine they are made in the same factory. Here is the restored chest of drawers, now looking lovely again with a natural satin finish. After stripping and gentle sanding, this was given a couple of coats of shellac polish. The final step was to cut back the polish with some fine wire wool and apply @fiddes_woodfinishes Supreme Wax Polish.
