It was just a week ago that history was made at the 2020 Golden Globes. Awkwafina joined a small group of women that are of Asian decent who have been awarded for their role as lead actress. Imagine the first time you were learning how to drive a car. You are behind the steering wheel, start the engine, check the mirrors are placed right, and you are shifting gear from park to drive... your arms and legs clam up as you take the first steps.. despite the initial fear, you take a risk and go. We inherently have this fear of the unknown, or going out of our comfort zone. Some of us are stuck at the phase where we are constantly checking the mirrors, engine breaks, tire pressure and no matter how well you prepare there is still that hurdle of fear that is in between you and moving forward. Next time while you are driving, remember that liberating feeling where you overcame the fear of driving and are now able to explore and drive to new places... you can be discovering something new and adventurous that’s on the other side of fear :) Hope you have a fearless hump day!
Becoming a C.E.O. (We call it W.E.O.) was never part of my plan. In fact, growing up, I was told you got to make straight A’s, get into a good school, become a doctor, lawyer or educator and marry the successful “Prince Charming”. I followed that path and I was living it up to the point where I was a manager at a notable hospital, living in a gorgeous high rise, 🛍 bags from Cartier and Chanel, on a starvation diet and was engaged to a rich tall and handsome guy... but I was miserable. Today I went to sculpt hot yoga with my gf Maeve and it has been quite some time since I was able to workout again. It was an incredibly intense workout but I made it through! I completed the #weochallenge where I learned to practice adapting #weoisthenewceo This concept of redefining female leadership is so important to me. While working in healthcare, there were 6 men in leadership and just 1 woman. The woman made it her mission to keep me from getting promoted. In fact, she tried to get rid of me with every cell in her body. Why? Because she fought 20 years in the company to gain her position of leadership and I was the young, more educated, new girl that could replace her. If there were more opportunities, I wouldn’t have been a threat to her. The concept of WEO is important to me because women leadership is not supported in many industries. Especially in our culture, where the head of state can get away with putting women down, masculine and dominating qualities of leadership still persist. Even in business, the C-Level boards are made of mostly men and throwing in one women where her voice is constantly dismissed is not solving the underlying issue of inequality. Forcing women into a masculine form of leadership, that’s also outdated, doesn’t work. It’s incredible to know even in our language we don’t support women leadership. Photo taken by Adrianna Garcia
