Test fitted the new wing for the first time. Frankly, it’s awesome. Looks appropriate and period correct for the early 2000’s GD builds that we all miss. Looking at getting a quote from a paint shop sometime this week. I’m contemplating painting it myself but I’m not sure if I want to make a mess of it.

I truly feel like the car has reached its peak. I still have a few odds and ends to tie up but this is the most enjoyment I’ve ever gotten out of it. Looking back on it, had I known how much the 6-speed would truly transform the car I would have done it earlier. Either way, it is an absolute joy to drive every day and I am thrilled to be able to daily it again. Drive on.

I kinda laugh at times how much I’ve put on the back of this car to make it look more aggressive and interesting, and all the front needed was a $60 plastic lip off of eBay. Subaru definitely got the front end right on the hawkeye GD.

I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited to be able to drive this thing than I am right now. I still have a lot of little things I want to do but the main priority is to just drive it and keep it mechanically sound. Feels like it’s taken far more energy than it should have to get it to this point, which it has, but it certainly was worth it overall. Time to drive.

On tap today is our biyearly coil over maintenance. Cleaning and oiling the threads to make sure I get as many years out of them as I can. I’m also taking this time to switch spring rates from 12k front and 10k rear to 10k front and 12k rear to encourage more oversteer. Best part about all of this was my 7-year old son helping me along the way. Teach ‘em young. Anyone else doing some spring/summer prep?
This thing must not like me anymore. Fuel gauge isn’t working as well as it should be. I tried to start it last week and it wouldn’t. I thought the pump was shorting out or a fuse had blown. Pull the fuel pump to find the tank is bone dry. I’m assuming the fuel level sensor and float are just too old. At least that’s a little thing and won’t take a lot of effort to fix. Either way, feels good to have it back on the road.

And just like that, she’s back on the road. Finally got it all back together after needing a new center differential. I took her around town and she felt solid. No clunking or any noise or lack of engagement or drive. I got to admit, I was pretty paranoid taking her for a drive again, after having had so many bad experiences lately. I am certainly at the point where I’ve had enough wrenching and simply want to drive. Cheers to four wheels being on the ground!

Update: after getting the transfer case off I confirmed that the center diff is done for. Looked like it was barely hanging on then the couple of drives around town sent it packing. Time to order a new one from RalliSpec. After pulling the engine, I checked the flywheel bolts and they were all still torqued to spec, clutch was all fine, and the input shaft spun freely. So I put the engine back in, started it up, put the trans in first gear and still had the same intermittent engagement issue. Checked the axles and one was not clipped in, so I swapped it with one of the female axles that came with the swap hoping for a quick fix and still had the same engagement issues. I’m now thinking the center diff or output shaft is to blame. No idea why either of those would go bad after two days of driving. I confirmed ratios for the front and rear diffs, guessing maybe the guy who sold me the trans pulled a fast one on me and sold me a bad trans. Thinking back to the few days I drove it around town, the trans was clunking a lot. I wasn’t sure if that was normal for this trans, guess it wasn’t. Taking a lunch break then I’ll drop the transfer case and see what the damage is.
