April 1984, legt Porsche-Werkspilot Stefan Bellof (26) den Grundstein zum Gewinn des ersten Fahrer-Weltmeistertitels eines Deutschen auf der Rundstrecke. Gemeinsam mit dem Engländer Derek Bell entscheidet der Giessener das 1.000-Kilometer-Rennen von Monza für sich. Das Einsatzfahrzeug im Königlichen Park: der Porsche 956 mit der Chassis-Endnummer 009. Kurze Zeit später, am 4. Juni 1984, kommt es auf dem Nürburgring zu ersten Testfahrten auf dem soeben erst eröffneten Grand-Prix-Kurs. Die Porsche-Werksmannschaft probt für den späteren Triumph an gleicher Stelle – ein Stück Zeitgeschehen, dokumentiert von einem damals 17 Jahren alten Fan mit eigenem, bunt beklebtem Fotokoffer – und fadenscheiniger Entschuldigung für die Ausfallzeit an einem Moerser Gymnasium. Samstag, 12. Mai 1984: Von den Zuschauerrängen gellt ein Pfeifkonzert, als Bundesverkehrsminister Werner Dollinger (CSU) den neuen Nürburgring offiziell eröffnet. Yesterday we finally made it and went to @kringloopvintagemore in Leiden. @dannypostgowiththevlo had promoted the racing fotos and books for the last few days and so it was now-or-never. And of course, the shop was great! Great items to see and buy. We ent home with a bit of everything for a very nice price. Danny himself enjoyed his Sunday dumpster diving in Schiedam. Here is a selection of pictures that I DIDN'T buy. I liked them a lot, but I thought that someone else might appreciate them more. I'm not a formula 1 fan, anyways. Give me touring cars please! 1984, vor 40 Jahren, lief die letzte Saison der historischen Formel 2 Letzte Folge: 1972 bis 1984 Ab 1972 galt in der Formel 2 - wie in den ersten sechs Jahren dieser Kategorie - ein Hubraumlimit zwei Liter. Nach rund 20 Jahren lagen die Motorleistungen jetzt eineinhalb mal so hoch wie 1953, bei 270, 280 PS. Gegenüber den ersten F2-Jahren war nun die Zylinderzahl auf sechs begrenzt. In dieser Zweiliter-Formel 2 kam auch BMW zu grossen Erfolgen, sechsmal fuhren die F2-Europameister einen BMW-Motor, wie 1978 auch Bruno Giacomelli im March 782 (Bild links unten bzw. Bild 2). Nach Hubert Hahne 1969 wurden auch die Deutschen Jochen Mass 1973 im Surtees TS 15-Cosworth und Hans-Joachim Stuck 1974 im March 742-BMW jeweils F2-Vize-Europameister. Beide wurden gefördert von Jochen Neerpasch, zunächst Ford-Rennleiter, dann Chef der BMW Motorsport GmbH. Wie diese wurden auch die Neerpasch-Schützlinge und F2-Piloten Manfred Winkelhock und Christian Danner später F1-Piloten. Sensationell in die Formel 2 startete der Giessener Stefan Bellof 1982 im Maurer MM 82-BMW Heidegger, der gleich seine ersten beiden F2-Rennen, in Silverstone und Hockenheim, gewann (Bild rechts unten bzw. Bild 3). Je umfangreicher die F1-Saison-Kalender wurden, umso seltener starteten F1-Piloten in der Formel 2, wie Emerson Fittipaldi 1972 noch im Lotus 69-Cosworth (Bild oben bzw. Bild 1). In der zweiten Hälfte der 70er und ersten der 80er Jahre fuhren die F2-Europameister zweimal einen Renault V6 und dreimal einen Honda V6, gegen Ende der historischen Formel 2 mit Leistungen von 300 PS und mehr. Stefan Bellof (20 November 1957 – 1 September 1985) was a German racing driver. Bellof was the winner of the Drivers' Championship in the 1984 FIA World Endurance Championship, driving for the factory Rothmans Porsche team. His lap record on the Nordschleife configuration at the Nürburgring, set while qualifying for the 1000 km race in 1983, stood for 35 years, when it was beaten by Timo Bernhard in 2018. He also competed with the Tyrrell Formula One team during 1984 and 1985. Bellof was killed in an accident during the 1985 1000 km of Spa, a round of the World Endurance Championship. In 1984 Bellof failed to finish in his first two races in Brazil and South Africa, before scoring his first two championship points in successive races at Zolder and Imola. A retirement followed at Dijon, before Bellof achieved a podium finish in the rain-shortened Monaco Grand Prix. Despite starting down in 20th and last place, Bellof remained away from the barriers that caught out many of his rivals, and was catching the race-leading pairing of Alain Prost and Senna when the race was curtailed after 31 laps due to inclement weather conditions. At the end of the race, Bellof had been 21 seconds in arrears of Prost and 13.7 behind Senna. September 1985 hielt die Welt für einen kurzen Augenblick den Atem an. Um 17.38 Uhr jenes Sonntags bestätigten die Ärzte des Rehabilitationszentrums von Blanchimont den Tod von Stefan Bellof. Der 27-Jährige hatte sich beim 1000-Kilometer-Rennen von Spa-Francorchamps in Belgien zu einem waghalsigen Überholmanöver verleiten lassen. Im Streckenabschnitt “Eau Rouge” kam es zur fatalen Berührung mit Jacky Ickx, dem Einheimischen und ehemaligen Werksfahrer-Kollegen im Gruppe-C-Porsche. Es war eine jahrelange, verhängnisvolle Serie. Am 24. April 1983 fiel ihr einer der vielseitigsten Berufspiloten zum Opfer. Der 39-jährige Rolf Stommelen hatte bei seinem Fahrerkollegen John Fitzpatrick eine Vereinbarung für sechs Einsätze in den Vereinigten Staaten unterzeichnet. In Riverside/USA löste sich der hochgesetzte Heckflügel seines Porsche 935 turbo “Moby Dick” bei 320 km/h. Rolf Stommelen raste in eine Betonwand. Teile des Gitterrohrrahmen-Boliden flogen 250 Meter weit. Der Kölner war ohne Chance. Wenige Wochen später – am 11. Juli 1983 – wäre er 40 geworden. Dann hätte er seinen Helm für immer beiseite legen wollen. Wegbegleiter Manfred Winkelhock ereilte das Schicksal mit nur 32 Jahren. Am 11. August 1985 starb der Schwabe am Steuer eines Kremer-Porsche 962C im kanadischen Mosport. Der Werks-Porsche 962C verfügte über mehr Hubraum – drei Liter – und mehr Motorleistung als die Kundenteams.
