“When I arrived at WPI in 1979 the Life Sciences Department, I was the last postdoc of our first department head, James Danielli, and worked on algae. As the department morphed into its current focus on Biology and Biotechnology, I entered a tenure track position, began working on an aeroponic (mist) bioreactor for plant and animal tissues and was granted the department’s first patent. With funding from NSF and multiple MA corporations, I led the development of the BBT’s 3 course bioprocess curriculum and taught the Downstream Processing course. Along with a team of BBT and CHE faculty we oversaw installation of the SL Bioprocess lab now located in Gateway Park, then led and further developed by my first PhD student, the late Alex DiIorio, into the current BETC also at Gateway Park. After teaching Microbiology for 2 yrs, I shifted into teaching Plant Biology, now BB 2030 Plant Diversity and periodically taught other plant related courses. My research on Artemisia and artemisinin began in the early 1990s to attract students into my lab. Along with continued work on the mist reactor, occasionally on algae (for biofuels), and the development of plant tissues as mammalian cell scaffolds, the main thrust of my research has focused on scientific validation of Artemisia annua and A. afra as botanical drugs to treat many different diseases including covid-19, malaria, TB, and fibrosis. Over my career I have published >140 peer-reviewed papers; about a third focus on bioreactors and more than half on artemisinin or A. annua, and more recently, A. afra. I also have 3 patents (3 more pending). I was elected a Fellow of AAAS and SIVB. My Google H-index is 50, with an i10 of 106, with > 7,800 citations. I supervised >20 MS and 16 PhD students and more than 80 undergraduate project teams with about half of all theses and projects related to artemisinin/Artemisia. Spotlighting some of the research done by WPI Biology & Biotech Undergraduate students! 🎉 BBT undergrad Liv Santurri just returned from her IQP Project in San Jose, Costa Rica, where she worked with an NGO called FUNDECOR @fundecorcr, on the project named FUNDECOR: Visualizing Reforestation. 🌳 "I absolutely loved the IQP experience. FUNDECOR was such a great organization to work with and everyone was very passionate and knowledgeable about reforestation efforts, which helped to make our project a success. We were tasked with creating profiles for 5 small landowners and their properties with the hopes of attracting funding to start a new financial aid program for these small landowners. Spotlighting some of the research done by WPI Biology & Biotech Undergraduate students! 🎉 BBT undergrad Gavin Burkhart is completing his IQP project in Cadiz, Spain, where he is working with a team on research titled "Enhancing Wastewater Treatment with Photocatalytic Degradation of Microplastics in Cádiz and Algeciras, Spain" 💧 "My team is looking at a way to effectively degrade (eliminate) microplastics before they enter the environment, where they can have severe impacts on environmental and human health. We're hoping to do this via photocatalysis - UV-based degradation catalyzed by a semiconductor such as titanium dioxide.
