How does a storm chaser know they are too close to a storm? It's a trick question. They don't. More times than not, all the caution that is talked about between storms flies out the window once you are on location and shooting the storm. And that is just fine with me. This extraordinary, errant strike was about four miles away from where we were standing. All the rest of the lightning we captured was a safe 15 to 20 miles away. But lightning doesn't respect borders. While in the midst of a southern Arizona high desert severe thunderstorm that had strikes surrounding and over our head, there was no real safe purchase. I am OK with that. I don't know when he will call my appointment due, but I know I am ready. And if it means bringing the wonder of creation to others to see through my lens, I am happy. Last night's severe thunderstorm grounded all flights at Sierra Vista Airport. But that didn't stop us from seeking higher ground witness the unrestrained 360° light show blanketing the county. We stood transfixed as above us cloud to cloud lightning spanning distances of 60 miles and more turned the overcast skies into a neon sign proclaiming his power. In wonder, we watched as the setting sun transformed the typically ash grey hued mountains in the surrounding valleys into golden orange testaments to the wealth of his glory. And then, in the midst of it all, in the time it takes to blink an eye, he gave us a demonstration of the magnitude of his power as a tremendous thunderbolt stormed down from the shaded purple sky. In the three short years of chasing storms around the southern Arizona high desert, it was one of the most powerful moments I have witnessed. Sharing it with you is my humble honor. I have so many images from last night's southern Arizona high desert storm. My goal was to edit them all today. But then a new book suggestion came into my Kindle. If you follow me, you know my passion for photography and cooking. But you might not know that I have just as much love for reading. I am awed by a good author's ability to weave images from their imagination through words. It is a sacred gift. While many, more than I can ignore, have asked me to write a book when I see the talent of the authors I read, I doubt my ability to compete. Perhaps if I read a bit more, I can learn from these accomplished artists. This shot competed closely with the first image I posted today for my best shot selection. It has everything I love about the southern Arizona high desert. There are majestic mountains and rolling hills separated by a lush monsoon fed plain. There is a golden-hued sunset separating the horizon from the agitated clouds that blanketed the range. And there is a magnificent lightning bolt which seems unique to this region. It is an image I can get lost in and a testament to the creator. The book is The Secrets of Lost Stones, and I have only just started it so I cannot give a full review. So far, it is very engaging. In the backlog of images from the past few days (I ran out of hard disk space ...again!), I found this capture. As darkness tried to impose a stifling cloak over the azure southern Arizona high desert sky, the sun muscled through, illuminating a roiling cloud just as it spit its electrified charge to the waiting ground below. Mighty San Jose mountain was shrouded in shadows while distant mountains basked in the glistening daylight. The contrasts seemed to be a lesson in life. Have you ever noticed the peaceful tranquility that follows a storm? So often amid the turmoil, you cannot see the bright future ahead. Then there are times when the clear skies and perfect clouds are visible like a foreshadow of a better future. I wonder if this is why I enjoy chasing storms so much. During the violence of a storm, as the chaos I cannot control reigns down around me, I can have faith that the future will shine brightly once again. The storm will pass, the rain will clear, and the detritus will have been removed. In faith and knowledge of the truth, all winds can be withstood. I remain his scribe. It was with great relief that I stood in the field where the sunset and the passing monsoon storms finally quelled the stifling southern Arizona high desert August heat. As a storm raced across the valley plain, and the sun settled lower into the distant horizon, the landscape was transformed by the magic that can only happen here in this land of mystic beauty. Then, as if to ensure all eyes focused on the transcendent beauty of our creator's creation, an electric exclamation point descended from the turbulent sky. When the grass turns green during monsoon, the orange hues of sunset and the purple shades of twilight become more vibrant. This waterfall is accessed by crouching into a cave and walking through. People take turns to view it because the area of rock you stand on is very small. The flow of this waterfall was very heavy, and in an enclosed part of the canyon, so there was a cloud of mist immediately covering me and all my equipment. I really tested out the “weather-sealed” claim on my camera and lens. Also my ND filter claimed to have a hydrophobic coating that repels water droplets. It held up to its claim as well. I had to run into the cave with my hand over the lens, quickly set up the tripod, snap a 5 second exposure, and run back out. That 5 seconds was enough time for my entire setup to get soaked. I’ve seen some smart photographers take the shower cap from their hotel and cover their equipment until the second they shoot. I guess next time I’ll make sure I have one of those, but glad this shot worked out! This is one I’m definitely planning to print - the detail on the rocks and moss is super sharp! And my camera lives to see another day!

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is located south of St. Augustine in the city of Palm Coast. The property was once owned by a distant relative of George Washington. The gardens, located between the coast and the Mantanzas River, were established by Louise and Owen Young. The rock outcropping is coguina rock. Coquina rock is a composed of shells and sand bonded together with calcite. The rock has been used in construction for centuries where it is plentiful. War Hill Park is a large park on the north end of Lake Lanier in Dawsonville, Georgia. It has campsites, beaches, grills, etc. for overnight and day visitors. From a photographic standpoint it has a few very interesting features and can be effectively shot at either sunrise and sunset for great reflections.
Lake Sidney Lanier was created in 1956 and is formed primarily by the waters of the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. The lake covers 38.000 acres and has over 690 miles of shoreline. The lake is named after the poet Sidney Lanier.
