I had a great time moderating at @breedmediacreative’s inaugural Superyacht Marketing Roadshow yesterday. If you couldn’t make it, here are some paraphrased takeaways that I learnt during the event: • “We’re not good at communicating what a yacht does. A lot of marketing campaigns are ‘yacht first’ and not ‘experience first’ and that can alienate potential consumers” - Tim Davis @burgessyachts • “Boat shows are a critical part of the marketing agenda, but intimate events are where transactions start and finish” - Camilla Calza, @azimut_yachts + @benettiyachts • “We need to be creative about how we present superyachts to the mainstream. The economics of yachting, people profiles, interior focuses and sharing UHNW patterns and trends tend to be interesting to all different types of consumers. We need to understand that negative press about superyachts does exist, we cannot ignore the criticisms and instead we need to address the issues and showcase all the positive aspects of the industry” - Sophia Wilson @sekoyacomms • “We’ve always wanted to be a brand with different characters and different personalities; not a cookie-cutter, faceless brand” - Jamie Edmiston, @edmistonyachts • “Younger people are constantly on their phones, and the way they consume media is world’s away from the older generation. As the new guard comes up through the ranks, it will be interesting to see marketing campaigns getting bolder and more outside-the-box. Nautor Swan is best known for building luxurious sailing yachts, but it just proved it can design a beautiful motor yacht, too. Crafted from carbon composite and GPR, the newcomer showcases the same sleek and sporty lines as the Swan racing yachts but runs purely on engines rather than harnessing the wind. In fact, it is equipped with three inboard Volvo Penta engines that will allow it to reach an impressive 40 knots at full tilt. That top speed is bettered only by the yard’s 43-foot Swan Shadow powerboat, which can hit a bonkers 55 knots all out. Up top, the cockpit is equipped with a sunroof and sliding doors that can create a breezy, alfresco feeling when open or a cozy, protected vibe when closed. Below deck, the living quarters have a “home-like feeling” and can accommodate up to six guests via a full-beam owner’s suite, a VIP cabin, and a twin.
