Today, 300k Chinook salmon smolts from the Nitinat River hatchery were transferred over to a net pen at the Sooke Harbour Marina - soon to be released into the Juan de Fuca Strait after they grow. Another 300k are on there way to go through the same process in a couple of weeks! These fish will get acclimatized to the area, learn the scent of the Sooke River and after swimming up towards Alaska they will make their way back! This Sunday, Brookes Westshore Dorms participated in the 35th Annual Times Colonist 10 km run, better known as the TC10K! For the past three months, dorm students have been running, jogging, and walking on Sunday mornings as part of their “Marathon Club”; supported by our dorm parents and lead by dorm parent, Billie Cheung. Some students have even taken to running early in the morning before the dining hall has opened! All their efforts came together on Sunday morning as they left dorms at 6:45 am and headed downtown to the race. With a lot of excitement (and some trepidation) the students made their way to the starting line and began their race. What a day!
