The evolution of Tueq through the years. Tueq was a special project by the Latsis owned management company Sete, today known as PrivatSea, for a Saudi royal. She was delivered as a 72,6m in June 2002, just 24 months after signing the contract and 21 months after cutting the first steel. The remarkable short building time was achieved by building the yacht in sections of about 15 meters each and bringing them together. She was built at a commercial yard in Rotterdam, Van der Giessen - de Noord, to a design by Michael Leach who was also responsible for her interior. Unusual, as she’s no Feadship, was the naval architecture by De Voogt. A first refit in Greece in the winter of 2004/2005 enclosed her sundeck (photo 3-4). In 2006 her owner wanted more changes and an additional 4 cabins! August 2003, the Oceanco Lady Christine arriving in Monaco. While 55m yachts have become commonplace today and most even semi-custom, in 2003 a 55m was a mighty impressive yacht and among the largest around. This 2001 Oceanco was designed by Richard Hein and his A Group. Gerard Villate did a major part of the interior with Die Oldenburger for the guest cabins. Like all Oceanco's from that period, the hull of the yacht was built at Dorbyl, South African Shipyards in Durban and transported to Alblasserdam for outfitting. Different from most Oceanco’s from that time, she was no spec yacht but a full design for her owner Lord Laidlaw to be used as a private yacht and a mothership for his sailing yachts. Specific for her design was the master stateroom aft of the upper deck and the Key West Lounge all the way on top. To return to Savarona: President Ataturk spent only a mere six weeks onboard before passing away in 1938. After his death, she lay idle for many years before being converted into a naval training ship. Following a fire onboard in 1979, she was abandoned at the Turkish naval academy for ten years. In 1989, Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadikoglu agreed to lease the yacht for 49 years. Sadikoglu restored the ship at Tuzla shipyards according to an interior design by Donald Starkey and his team. The work lasted three years and cost about $45 million. For several years, she was active as one of the largest charter yachts on the market. In 2010, she made headlines amidst scandal when it was revealed that Savarona had been used multiple times for prostitution purposes involving young girls from Russia and Ukraine. As a result, the Turkish government seized the yacht in 2013 and cancelled Sadikoglu’s lease. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism managed the yacht from 2013 to 2019 when the upkeep became too burdensome. Consequently, Savarona was transferred to the Turkish Navy and has since deteriorated further. There are plans to repurpose her as either a floating museum or a Navy parade ship.
