Throwback to 2 years ago when i purchased a regular 4 door tahoe from @davidfreiburger and roadtripped it to the ziptie drags from LA, then all the way back to nashville tn. While i was at ziptie i had all the motortrend guys sign the dash. When i got back the tahoe just sat and i got an offer to trade it straight up for this 79 T/A because it was signed. Another #ducttapedrags in the books. We cruised @the1welder_duster 's Duster over to @tucsondragway this year. Had a rough start 2am Friday but the 360/4speed Plymouth performed flawlessly on it's maiden long haul trip the rest of the 1400+ miles. Oh, other than the clock stopped working😆. We did the ol' "pull the seats out" trick to sleep on floorboard like we did in my #Belvedex a few years ago at #ziptiedrags. We cruised the #jankyd100 over last year as we try to mix it up a bit. So we tried to get to Tuscon AZ for the #ducttapedrags yet again this year. We also tried to take the same car again this year. After fixing what when wrong last year we got new issues this year but we were able to make it. Next few post were from the event but unfortunately I wasn't able to get many pictures this year. That's the third time had an #LSMotor back there lol. Today I drop it off at @cogswellmarinemotorsports for disassembly, autopsy, and parts scavenging. @davidfreiburger's recent #fanart posts reminded me that way back in 2017 I drew the #crusherimpala. There's kind of a cool story that goes with it. I drew this in a hotel room at the first night of the only-ever Ohio #ziptiedrags. Like 3 months after my seizure and emergency craniotomy I attended the first ZTD in Tucson and met the @roadkillshow crew. In an act of total awesomery (that should be a word) they decided to let me tag along on that second event in a big #bucketlistliving adventure. @wesleyallison got me out there, @challengeher (then editor of Roadkill Magazine) was my wing woman and bestie, I got a media pass &, a golf cart (my mobility scooter got roadkilled in the airport), access to the track, and the tower, and the dudes, it was awesome. I was pretty sick back then. I remember throwing up in the back of the rental suv in the rain and @finnegan999 pulled into a gas station and ran out with paper towels while Elana made sure I didn't feel bad about it. There's a lot of good stories from that trip that didn't involve puke, but the one that inspired this art was that for the first time the crusher #impala pulled a tire off the ground. Freiburger was so STOKED! I remember he burst into the tower a few minutes later & yelled across the room to @stevedulcich "DUDE! DID YOU SEE THAT?!" Dulcich, just excited, "Yeah man that was awesome! A paper slipper for sure." Seeing how excited they were - just two buddies playing cars, not personalities putting on a show but authentic friends made an impact on me. That night I wrote an unsolicited article about it for the magazine and drew this picture. Nothing ever came of the article. My fault. I thought I sent it but found out later it never made it, it's probably in my computer somewhere but that doesn't matter. The writing of it, the processing of the whole thing made an impact on me. I remember the opening: My favorite part of Roadkill isn't the cars. It's the friendships. As #hotrodding has become my life in the years since, I've stuck to that as the highest pursuit of the hobby. Making #friendsandmemories is what I want to do with my car. And my life. Spool me twice... Bummed I have oncology appointments Thursday and my MRI next week and this thing is still destroyed 😐. @imperialbeachhottie has noticed the challenge it's presenting for me to life through the hard days without it. She graciously told me I should take 3 weeks off the bus to focus on #punishstang. I wish it was that simple. I guess I could start hooking up all the wires we disconnected in the rewire - that's a giant job. The death spaghetti is gone but basically the brake, tail, headlights, and fuel pump are all that work now. I wasn't involved too much in that part of the project and I know things weren't cooperating at the end. I think the harness needs some repair after a flasher mod went sideways, so I'm unsure what works,, where to start, and how to do what. And was the starter going bad or was that a wiring issue? I suppose i could put the interior back in, that's still all out from the flood. I should try and figure out where my rear brakes went... And I guess I could pull the center section. It needs a new ring and pinion, so that's what I need to do there right? Our last minute driveshaft needs balancing too, that's feels. Intimidating but I think it's not too bad right? Honestly, this is even more overwhelming now that I listed it out... All that of course feels secondary to the engine. That's in good hands though. Mitchell at @cogswellmarinemotorsports will know what to do and how to build it right and @hawkspeedcustom is ready to swap it in, @sportabout_grubaugh and @meadwhippo are eager to bring it all out there. It's nice of her to say that, but the family is counting on me to build the bus and I don't want to get too far off track. It feels like the bigger priority. I don't know, I'm just really overwhelmed right now 😔

In the end, I'll be glad for the upgrade and the reminder of three lessons we all need to remember: Lesson 1) #begrateful for what we have and take nothing for granted. Be it our health, a beloved possession, or even a loved one #nothinglastsforever. I'm reminded of this a I prepare to attend a funeral today. And yesterday's oncology appointment was a reminder that even a functioning brain is a gift. Lesson 2) You can rebuild. You can heal. You can stay positive. You can #nevergiveup, #neversurrender and #staystoked no matter what. Lesson 3) There's #noreplacementfordisplacement.
Who's at #SEMA this week? Being featured at #semashow set a #bucketlistliving high score for me in 2019 and marked my first successful caretaker-free adventure. There were tears and brain-outs, I got lost, I couldn't find water one day and almost threw up, I forgot my phone another day and didn't know how to find help... it was really hard. But it was also really good because I had to adult myself out of those situations. And by God's grace I did it! That week truly marked an undeniable turning point in my recovery. I came home a different man. Able to do things I hadn't been able to do for 4 straight years. It truly was life-changing. I didn't pursue the show this year. It was the right thing to do. Focusing on family, rebuilding our life and building our bus for the next chapter of that life has been more important. I do miss it though, and all the friends that came with it. Have fun and take lot of pictures guys!
I'm bummed to have a cancer appointment Thursday and not have #punishstang fixed yet. It's hard to explain how big a coping life-tool this car is for me. Please pray I function well and don't get stressed out by it. On the good news front, I think I found a solution! @bk_auto_wrecking_ has a 6.0 core that he'll sell me! It's up in LA (Paramount) and I'll be up that way (West Covina) for a funeral on Friday so I could pick it up. My buddy @cogswellmarinemotorsports will help me go through it and make sure it's healthy. @imperialbeachhottie is willing to give me up for a 1-day #roadtrip and @sportabout_grubaugh and @meadwhippo are both down to load it up and tow it to Tucson where @hawkspeedcustom can put it in. That's a lot of moving pieces, but hey - #inoperablemeetsunstoppable right? The immediate challenge is scoring the dough to buy the engine block in 3 days. With the time we had we noticed that there was no way the #ratchero was going to make it anywhere close to Arizona. It was 7pm on friday and the carb, outta all the things the carb was flooding! With 6 hours till Phoenix we just knew we were out. We could not make it to Arizona within a reasonable amount of time. We found a motel and stayed the night. The next day we find out why the carb was flooding. The float somehow was retaining fuel sinking the float and flooding the carb, so no matter how much we smacked the carb the engine was still going to flood. Luckily we find a parts store and we were able to patch up the carb. Finally!! It runs!! We packed our things together and we left for the road trip. This was the first time in 20 years the car was on the road. Then we started to notice why it was parked for that long. First the car still leaked, and from everything. Secondly the engine only ever made about 15 psi of oil pressure all of our trip. Third the car wobbles the rear tires wobble with some given speed. We still dont know if it's from the axles or the tires. Even with all the issues we still trucked on. This thing miraculously made it to about Palm springs when the engine just dies. With only a month we made a list and got started on getting this thing back together. We bandaged most of the leaks from the engine and trans. Sealed up the power steering system and made sure this pile will stop. The disaster was the wiring. Since this thing was in a field for 20 years, rodents ate most of the wiring outta this thing. We had to rewire the engine, the lighting, and place some gauges to accurately see how screwed we were when the car breaks down. With time against us we were just able to get this thing together. I mean we were working on this pile at 3am the day of the event. Just the sun setting on my dreams 😥 Tonight I really needed a drive, an escape, a few minutes of freedom and fresh air - instead I'm sitting in the dark feeling sad and alone. Not devastated mind you - I have too much to be grateful for. It's just brain stuff. I'm not in a full irrational weepy brain out - but my brain had a big day and now everything feels too hard. I'm overwhelmed by so many thoughts. I wish I had my car. My life-tool and stoke machine. It’s so weird to not be driving #punishstang everyday. My buddy Owen in Tucson said he would swap the block out for me if I find one, and @sportabout_grubaugh offered to tow it there with me and bring me home. So of you're in Tucson or Phoenix and have a lead on a 6.0 or 5.3 shortblock, or even in San Diego or Yuma, pls let me know.
