Let's talk gear - recently we went hiking on a trail that got fairly steep with 2,300' elevation gain over just a few miles, and also happened to be mostly ice.
While it was definitely possible to make it up the trail in just boots, microspikes made it substantially easier. Slip a pair of these traction devices over your boots, and hiking becomes possible (even easy) in winter conditions.
