In the middle of a heavy few weeks, the need for a weekend nature reset remained strong. I couldn’t find sunny or even dry mountains anywhere near me, so I put my trust in technology and let the weather apps direct me to where I’d have the best chance of finding sunshine. The drizzle that followed me to Bellingham and through the Chuckanuts didn’t inspire confidence, but I kept driving. I’d been to this same area around the same time last year and I know the weather can change pretty quickly. The first patches of blue sky appeared as I crossed over onto Fidalgo Island. A lot of people park at the trailhead to take photos from the well-known bridge, but the as-long-as-possible route I took up to Goose Rock was quiet. “You hike ALONE? I could never!!” 🤷🏻♀️ I mean, you could. Just be smart about it. Here are some tips for any of you that want to but are nervous. (In no particular order) 1. Always let people know where you are. My husband, son and two best friends know where I’m going. 2. Otherwise KEEP IT QUIET. Do not “check in” where you are or post where you are. Follow this rule: post where you’ve been, not where you are or where you are going. 3. Carry protection. There are MANY forms of protection, carry one or all. Whatever you are comfortable with. If you are in state or national parks check the website to see what the rules are. @killer_bee_tactical has a great amazon store full of things he recommends. 4. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. I do not use headphones because I prefer to hear nature, but if you do, invest in the bone conduction ones that allow you to listen to your environment. 5. Often times when hiking cell service is limited. Give your loved ones times to expect to hear from you. Check in when you do have service. 6. Carry plenty of food, water and invest in a safety whistle. They are cheap and easy to carry. 7. Learn to read the park map and keep it with you. Even without service the map apps on your phone will change when you walk. It just won’t give directions. 8. Head out with a fully charged phone. Even without service you can use the map, sound and light. A back up battery/charger isn’t a bad idea either. 9. STAY ON THE TRAIL. It’s so easy to get lost if you aren’t use to land navigation. 10. Act confident even if you aren’t. Being big, confident and aware of your surroundings will often lessen your chances of being a victim. ✌🏼 I hope this helps some of you to find your way to the trails. Be aware and be safe. A LOT of groups of hikers will also often welcome you to join them. Just because you head out solo doesn’t mean you have to stay alone. I personally prefer to be alone with nature. Osceolas yesterday! Right away, I slipped on an icy rock on one of the first water crossings and splashed water all over myself. My goretex Merrells saved the day and kept my feet totally dry! Barebooted up to the junction and put on spikes shortly after. Pretty solid trail up until around the chimney. As the day wore on, the snow started to soften right up, making the steep section going back down East Osceola very sketchy. Lots of slippery snow and icy spots. I can’t believe how many times I have driven past the turn off for this National Park. This one has something for everyone. 📍Bungonia National Park ⛺️ Bungonia Campground was a great place to set up camp. This place had great facilities to reset for the next day, best part definitely was the hot showers. 🥾 so many Hikes to choose from and that cater for all different fitness levels. We covered quite a bit over the 2 days. Would highly recommend the Red/white track combined. All up this is a 10k circuit with steep descent and accent, the Gorge is beautiful and easy going with amazing views through the canyon. The boulder section is next level with the giant boulders making you feel so small, this section can be tricky to navigate with so many options to choose. We did find some caves on day 2 which are open for you to explore, Grill Cave is pretty impressive and extends down quite far, while Mass cave is not quite as big. Check out the tracks on the National Parks site. A month ago I was solo hiking between Prevally and Contos in Western Australia with too much weight on my back. Some of the day - like every day on the Cape to Cape - was spent hiking on the beach. But I ended it above the waves, watching sharks, dolphins and stingrays swim in the shallows (and accidentally tripping over a tree stump too close to the cliff). In the evening, after setting up camp, I ate my rehydrated dinner with three friends I’d made while hiking: Lucky, Joey and Kristine. We shared our food, stories and laughs late into the night. (Which for a hiker is about 8pm). My 20s weren’t the fun years I expected - I got stuck in a bad relationship that sucked all my personality out of me and I lost myself for a long time. 📍 Grand Canyon
Today we hit the jackpot with a Zbonds traverse. Parked on 302 in the lot, headed up Zealand rd which was bare. Put on exo spikes at the start of the trailhead, trail was frozen solid and perfect and kept them on until Lincoln woods. Only part of trail that was mushy was coming down from Bondcliff. 23 miles and 8:18 moving. Saw a handful of hikers out there. Amazing temps, clear sky’s and solid packed trail from last nights freezing temps. Well that was probably the hardest hike I have ever done! Koko Crater Railroad Trail is an abandoned WWII railroad track that was used to transport supplies to the top of the peak. Now, it’s a 1,048 step hiking trail straight up the cliff- fun?!😬😬 But we did it! 💪🏼💪🏼 #kokocraterstairs #girlswhohike

This is an extremely short but very beautiful trail, so save it for later when you are in the area, as this is a must-see! Also, if you are there, make sure to drive Independence Pass and enjoy all the breathtaking views. Aside from the incredible views, you can explore remnants of an old mining town that is located east of the Continental Divide. Výhľady, ktoré nikdy neomrzia. Tesne pred ochladením sme stihli krásny okruh z Vyšnej Revúcej. Najprv výstup na Ploskú posiatu krokusmi a odtiaľ ďalej na Chatu pod Borišovom. Na tejto chatke som bola viackrát, ale tentokrát je nový chatár a musím povedať, že jedlo aj atmosféra boli na jednotku s hviezdičkou ❤️ Ďakujem @chaticka_pod_borisovom . 🖤 Road to Recovery: Tread Walk 🖤 Half way through the series. Of course I did my walk during my lunch break because you know Friday nights are about CFA and relaxing. This walk was around some ancient ruins and we learned about the Maya history in the area. Movement for the body and knowledge for the mind. Perfect combo. It’s almost weekend time.
