📍 Mendota Trail, pt 3, Mendota to Leonard, VA ➡️ 24/52 🗓️ 4/22/24 🥾Difficulty rating: Easy 🚗 Parking: Large grass lot with portable facilities 🐾 Pets allowed but must be leashed 💰 Entrance fee: Free! 💚 I Finally managed to finish the last third of the Mendota Trail last Tuesday, and I’m honestly glad I left this bit for last. It was, without question, the prettiest portion of the trail. 💚 Like most of the sections, this one included multiple creek crossings and trestle bridges. At mile marker 11.5, the trail crosses the Holston River via the restored Sunny Side Trestle, which is paralleled by a 275-foot-long swinging bridge! And if you know me, you know, I love a good swinging bridge. This one did not disappoint. 💚 While I have seen wildlife on other legs of the Mendota Trail, the only ones I saw this time around were some friendly chickens, and a raging turtle party along the river. (Check out my story archives for video of that 🐢). 💚 While I chose to break up the portions this time around, I’d like to do this trail in its entirety sometime this fall, if any of my friends are down. I bet all of the stretches are beautiful when the leaves change. The trail is easy enough for beginners, with no technical climbing or even poles required. What’s got me through that is the community I built around me. Full of people who support me, encourage me and who understand what I’m going through. Community has been integral in getting to know myself outside of my home structure. It’s been a pivotal part of my own story when figuring out my identity, in particular my queerness. It’s the people I’ve met who gave me support and guidance, and who showed me love and care that gave me the confidence and nourishment I needed to live my life authentically and the way I wanted to. I started Touch Grass because I want to help other queer women and non-binary people of colour to be able to find community in the same way I’ve been able to. I’ve loved the outdoors since I was in school. I never got to go on holidays abroad, so camping trips with DofE and army cadets were my holidays and I always had so much fun. Was mir an Tag 9 unserer Trekking-Tour in Mustang passiert ist, könnt ihr im Blog nachlesen. Aber zuerst wieder ein paar kulturelle Infos: Auf einem Manistein sind heilige Texte oder Gebete eingemeiselt. Sie werden von Pilgern an heiligen Orten wie Passhöhen, Stupas und Klöstern abgelegt. Mit der Zeit entstehen so Manisteinhaufen oder -mauern. In Ghami steht die größte Mani-Wall in Mustang. Nach der Sage wurde dort ein Dämon getötet. Der Darm des Dämons war zu lang und passte nicht in die Stupa. Daher baute man die Mauer und begrub unter dieser den Darm des Dämons. Die Mauer ist in vier Farben gefärbt, wie auch viele Stupas und Häuser im Mustang Gebiet. Rot steht für Feuer, weiß für Frieden, schwarz für die Erde und gelb für das Leben auf der Erde, also die Menschen, Tiere und Pflanzen. . I was asked to write about the food I have been preparing for my up and coming hike. Previously I have prepared my own dinners and chosen freeze dried meals for lunch, but I have made my dinners with dried products that I could find in the grocery store. I have grown tired of the selection quickly, and when I saw @terriertokig drying her own ingredients I decided to that as well. She shared some recipes with me, and I found some in a book my brothers gifted me once. But I have made the choice to go with wheat berry instead of rice a lot of the times, and have decided to let it soak before cooking it just like I do with pasta. It reduces the cooking time and I don’t have to cook it only to dry it at home. Some of the foods I have prepared and dried are taco soya mince, cheese, lime zest, mushrooms, leek, lentils, rice seasoned with saffron and chili. On the trail I will be enjoying tacos, lentil stews, pasta with mushrooms, lime lentils with quinoa and saffron rice. I have once, a few years ago, prepared all my meals for a hike by myself and dried some ingredients, but despite following recipes for meals for hiking I found they didn’t give me enough energy. I felt drained. Combining freeze dried meals and home made meals is a combo though that has worked very well for me. Reposting cuz the videos in my last post ruined the pic quality :( A couple of miles down the Black Canyon, right before the Hoover Dam, you’ll come across swaying palms and a waterfall hot spring. The water is crystal clear with a paradise green tint to it. Honestly, it’s a surreal area. We called it the Lost World. La vida últimamente se trato de nadar con tortugas, caminar por la selva, jugar a encontrar las playitas más remotas y salvajes de la isla, una dieta de papaya, mango y cocada, y por qué no? perseguir atardeceres. Cambiar de ecosistema me hace salir totalmente de la zona de confort. Realmente al principio se sentía muy raro no estar en un clima hostil ni en aguas heladas 😂. Tampoco tenía idea de como preparar la mochila (!!!). Pero lo que más me gustó fue la oportunidad de seguir aprendiendo de otros lugares y entender un poco más del mundo en el que vivimos. 🐢🐒🦎 Si buscan inspiración para hacer senderitos en Brasil les dejo algunos acá para que planifiquen su aventura: - Ponta do Pai Vitorio (queda a 6 km de Buzios y tenes esta vista!). Es increíble lo que podes encontrar cuando te alejas un poco de los lugares turísticos. - Nadar con tortugas en Arrial do cabo pero Ojo! Siempre respetando el espacio de los animales. No alimentes a la fauna silvestre y hay que usar protector solar amigable con los arrecifes. - En Ilha Grande, hicimos un trekking de cinco horas en la selva para llegar a Parnaioca, dormimos en la casa de una familia que vive ahí y te ofrece comida y alojamiento (increible!). Una buena forma de viajar es eligiendo interactuar con los locales y dar soporte a la economía de la zona :) . - Subir al Pico do Papagaio. Es el punto más alto de la isla!. Este no lo hice por tiempos, pero lo dejo acá porque se veía muuuuy bueno!. My weekend at the @bostonoutdoorexpo was a success! This was my first time attending an expo, let alone an expo of this size (over 16,000 people got tickets!). I handed out hundreds of stickers and business cards from my booth and I got to chat and make connections with a lot of folks. In addition to having a booth I was also invited to be a speaker. I spoke on Saturday and Sunday with @arwengillett of @thicketadventure about how to be bearable to fat people in the outdoors. We talked about our stories and gave some good examples about how the language we use can sometimes cause harm, even without intending to. It was great to open up that dialogue and we had a good discussion and Q and A afterwards. I also got to be on a panel of outdoor women, discussing what we do and answering questions about things that affect us as women. Possibly my favorite part of the weekend was meeting one of my heroes, @themirnavator . I’ve been wanting to meet her for so long. What an incredible human. I’m still in shock. An amazing weekend. I will now be recovering from all the peopling and getting some good shut eye.
