The American Museum of Natural History was founded in 1869, but opened in its present location in 1877. While it may seem like one building, it now consists of eighteen interconnected units representing the work of over a dozen prominent architects.

The original building by Vaux & Mould is now hidden behind the long 77th Street pavilion, but the central section and later addition of the east and west wings that complete the 77th Street elevation were designed by Cady, Berg, & See in a Romanesque Revival style in 1891 and 1894-1900, respectively.

Even though it's not the main entrance anymore, this section has always been my favorite. The pink granite, red slate roofs, curved stairways over the old carriage entrance, and the seven-bay arcade all set it apart from most of the other major museums in the city.
