Today, April 24th 1913 the Woolworth Building officially opened. The Woolworth Building is a residential building and early skyscraper at 233 Broadway in the Tribeca neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City, United States. Designed by Cass Gilbert, it was the tallest building in the world from 1913 to 1930, with a height of 792 feet (241 m). More than a century after its construction, it remains one of the 100 tallest buildings in the U.S.. "On the evening of April 24th, 1913, American "five-and-dime" retailer Frank W. Woolworth hosted a gala banquet on the twenty-seventh floor of his eponymous building to celebrate the accomplishments of his architect Cass Gilbert."- Excerpt from An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City by Phillip James Dodd #PJD #PhillipJamesDodd #AmericanRenaissance #BeauxArts #BeauxArtsArchitecture #architecture #architecturelovers #gildedage #julianfellowes #gildedagearchitecture #gildedagemansions #gildedageNY #GildedAgeNewYork #thegildedage #author #speakingengagement #PJDBespokeDesigns #woolworthbuilding #frankwwoolworth

I've just returned from a delightful weekend in Palm Beach at The Colony Hotel, where the Florida Chapter of The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art hosted their annual Addison Mizner Awards. Thank you to everyone associated with the Chapter for making the weekend such a great success, and for making everyone feel so welcome. Also a big thank you to the judges - Mark Ferguson, Victoria Hagan, and Mitchell Owens - for selecting my design in the Estate Section of Palm Beach as one of the winners. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtably Mitch's poetic description of my design during the award ceremony - that I just have to share: "On a disquietingly long, narrow lot in the Estate Section, architect Phillip James Dodd conjured up the grandeur of old Palm Beach for a contemporary family, with a slender and inventive house that recalls the talents of the namesake of tonight’s awards. The jury was struck by its eccentric grace notes, among them the charmingly lowkey entrance pavilion that is crowned by a scrolling baroque pediment and a central tower that peeps above the tiled roofs like a friendly sentinel. The house, enriched with visual diversions and stylistic delights, makes the most of the lot’s proportional challenges. A cunning sequence of setbacks compress the lengthy building’s footprint while adding variety and interest as well as room for columned loggias that face the pool and primary garden. This year’s jury all thought that Mizner himself would have been proud." From one storyteller and wordsmith to another - thank you Mitch - and thank you to the Florida Chapter of the ICA&A. #PJD #PhillipJamesDodd #AmericanRenaissance #BeauxArts #BeauxArtsArchitecture #architecture #architecturelovers #gildedage #julianfellowes #gildedagearchitecture #gildedagemansions #gildedageNY #GildedAgeNewYork #thegildedage #author #speakingengagement #PJDBespokeDesigns #mizneraward

After learning of LYNNEWOOD HALL some twenty years ago…this week I was finally able to visit this legendary gilded age masterpiece. Sometimes referred to as the Titanic mansion…its owners son and his grandson went down with the ship… is located in the elegant northern Philadelphia suburb of Elkins Park. After years of neglect and passing through several owners…the Hall, nearing certain demolition, has finally been saved and is in the beginning stages of a complete restoration. The LYNNEWOOD HALL Preservation Foundation Inc., its new owner, was formed and is undertaking the gargantuan task of bringing the 110 room mansion back to its original glory! Following the Great Fire of 1871, Chicago’s moneyed class began migrating south from Michigan Avenue to Prairie Avenue. This resulted in the construction of dozens of stately yet ornate urban mansions, often built in “exotic” revival styles. These included the likes of Marshall Field, Philip Armor, and more of the city’s heaviest industrial and financial hitters. One such example, sitting at Prairie and 18th Street was commissioned by William Wallace Kimball of Kimball organs and pianos in 1890 and was completed two years later. Largely considered one of the finest examples of Châteauesque architecture in the country, the Kimball Mansion was loosely inspired by the Chateau de Josselin in Normandy, France. Designed by Pullman architect Solon Spencer Beman, the 3-story home was comprised of pale limestone and featured multiple turrets. Facing Prairie Avenue was an ornately-carved gable set above an eliptical bow window. On the roof, dramatic pinnacles and finials further emphasized the mansion’s French origins. Although unconfirmed, rumors persist that Kimball only built his mansion at 1801 Prairie Avenue at the behest of friend and neighbor George Pullman, who all but demanded that whatever be built at the site appease his personal tastes. Regardless, after the passing of Kimball’s widow in the 1920s, their former home served multiple purposes, including a boarding house. The property was eventually purchased in tandem with the neighboring Coleman-Ames house by the U.S. Soccer Federation, to whom it still belongs today. #chicagohistory #nearsouthside #southsidechicago #gildedagearchitecture #chateauesque #thenandnowchicago

Algonquin Club on Commonwealth Avenue was designed by McKim, Mead and White in 1887-88. This first photo is from around 1890. Second and third photos taken on Tuesday. You’ll notice a slight change on the ground floor. The plans in 1887 had the setback too close to the sidewalk and therefore in violation. Construction continued as the City of Boston initiated a suit to get the code enforced. The projecting windows were not the problem, it was the continuous wall. The City won the court case and the Algonquin Club had to remove the continuous wall. That’s how it is in the second and third photos. Algonquin Club remained a private club until 2018 when they decided to sell the building to Sandy and Paul Edgerley. The new ‘Quin has been open for 3 years and it remains a private club. The redecoration of the main rooms follows what was there with a new interpretation by designer Ken Fulk. At first I was not too crazy about the project, but it has grown on me. My main concern was what had happened to the old art collection. I’m sure some was sold, but other art works remain. Most of the AH Davenport furniture survives in new upholstery. The interior photos were taken by Jenna Peffley. In one of my pictures from Tuesday you’ll notice the townhouse to the left. It was built in 1883-84 with Cabot and Chandler as architects. It was lived in from the 1880s to the 1920s by Charles and Edith Perkins. He was president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy RR. Edith died in 1926 while at her vacation house in Santa Barbara when an earthquake caused damage to her house. Thanks to Back Bay Houses. Originally built on Beacon Street in the Back Bay in the 1860s, but totally remodeled in 1905 for Clarence and Jessie Barron. Architects for the remodel were Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. Clarence Barron was Publisher of the Wall Street Journal and owner of Dow, Jones. In 1921 he started Barron’s as well. He began in the 1880s as a financial journalist with the Boston Financial News Bureau and was known for being a thorn in the side of the robber barrons. He lived here for around 35 years and at his estate on Cohasset Harbor. The estate there was expanded by his daughter and son in law Jane and Hugh Bancroft. It was Bancroft heirs about 15 years ago who sold the business empire to Rupert Murdoch. #cramgoodhueandferguson #ralphsdamscram #backbayarchitecture #backbayboston #gildedagearchitecture #gildedagemansions #dowjones #wallstreetjournal #archi_ologie #townhouseliving #barrons #townhouse

Gould Memorial Library, Bronx NY, Stanford White/McKim, Mead and White. During 2015 Open House NY. “The Gould Memorial Library (GML; also nicknamed Gould) is a building on the campus of the Bronx Community College (BCC), an institution of the City University of New York (CUNY), in University Heights, Bronx, New York City, United States. The building was designed by Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White. Constructed between 1895 and 1900 as the central library of New York University (NYU)’s Bronx campus, it was part of the New York University Libraries system. The library is named after railroad magnate Jay Gould, whose daughter Helen Miller Shepard funded the project in his memory. Gould is no longer used as a library, instead serving primarily as an event space. Gould’s facade and interior are New York City designated landmarks, and it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New York University’s Bronx campus was developed in the 1890s. Construction on the library started in 1895 after Shepard anonymously donated $200,000. During the 20th century, NYU used the library for commencement ceremonies and other events. The university installed numerous busts of artists inside the library during the 1920s and 1930s. NYU built additional campus libraries in the 1950s due to a lack of space at Gould, and the auditorium was rebuilt after an arson attack in 1969. After NYU sold its Bronx campus to CUNY in 1973, the Gould Library was converted into an event space, and the library fell into disrepair. The auditorium was restored in 2000, and the library was further refurbished in the early 21st century.” @wikipedia for text #openhouseny #gouldmemoriallibrary #bronxcommunitycollege #bronxny #archilovers #archihunter #neoclassical #mckimmeadandwhite #stanfordwhite #nyu #nyubronx #oldnewyork #gildedagearchitecture #architecturephotography 📸 10pics

Set amid the magnificent achievements of an American Renaissance, this book recounts not only the fascinating stories of some of New York's most famous and significant Beaux-Arts landmarks, it also recalls the lives of those who commissioned, designed, and built them. These are some of the most acclaimed architects, artists, and artisans of the day―Daniel Chester French, Cass Gilbert, Charles McKim, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Stanford White―and some of the most prominent millionaires in American history―Henry Clay Frick, Jay Gould, Otto Kahn, J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and the ubiquitous Astor and Vanderbilt families. Names that―as Julian Fellowes (the acclaimed director of Downton Abbey) notes in the Foreword―“still reek of money.” Excerpt from the Introduction An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City -by Phillip James Dodd Hardcover edition is available on Amazon.com! #PJD #PhillipJamesDodd #AmericanRenaissance #BeauxArts #BeauxArtsArchitecture #architecture #architecturelovers #gildedage #julianfellowes #gildedagearchitecture #gildedagemansions #gildedageNY #GildedAgeNewYork #thegildedage #author #speakingengagement #PJDBespokeDesigns

The Hotel Ponce de Leon, also known as The Ponce, was a luxury hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, built by millionaire developer and Standard Oil co-founder Henry M. Flagler. Built between 1885-1887, the winter resort opened in January 1888. The hotel was designed in the Spanish Renaissance Revival style as the first major project of the New York architecture firm Carrère & Hastings, which gained world renown for more than 600 projects, including the House and Senate Office Buildings flanking the US Capitol. Their final project was the New York Public Library. The hotel is the first of its kind constructed entirely of poured concrete, using the local coquina stone as aggregate. The hotel is one of the first buildings in the country wired for electricity from the onset, with the power being supplied by DC generators installed by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. Since 1968, with the founding of Flagler College, the original building and grounds of the hotel serve as the centerpiece of the campus Flagler College. #henryflaglermorrisonmuseum #poncedeleonhotel #flaglercollege #spanishcolonialrevival #spanishcolonialarchitecture #archilovers #archihunter #archi_ologie #carrereandhastings #ca1888 #newyorkflorida #snowbirds #historyofflorida #architecturephotography #elevatedperspective #archidrone #jmhdroning #staugustine #staugustineflorida #gildedage #gildedagearchitecture #americanexpansionism 📸10pics @flaglercollege

The holiday season is known for being a time of spirits, so what better place to spend a crisp December evening ghost hunting than @belcourtofnewport? Although no specters manifested, the home's unusual architecture and rich history made the visit well worth it! Belcourt Castle in Newport, Rhode Island, stands as a remarkable testament to architectural fusion and historical intrigue. Built in 1894 by Richard Morris Hunt, the renowned architect, this enchanting estate was commissioned by Oliver Belmont. The castle's design is a mesmerizing amalgamation of various architectural styles, showcasing elements of French Renaissance and Gothic influences that create an otherworldly ambiance. Belcourt Castle's history intertwines with the vibrant life of Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, a leading figure of the Gilded Age and Oliver Belmont's second wife. Alva played a pivotal role in shaping the architectural landscape of Newport. The castle's narrative takes a mysterious turn during the tenure of the Tinney family, who resided within its walls after the Belmont era. Legends and tales emerged during this period, speaking of eerie occurrences and purported hauntings within Belcourt's chambers. The Tinney family reportedly experienced ghostly sightings, unexplained sounds, and mysterious happenings. Some believe spirits were attached to items brought in as part of the Tinney's large and eclectic antique collection. These tales of hauntings during the Tinney family's residency became part of the local folklore, intertwining with the rich history of Belcourt Castle. While the exact veracity of these stories remains elusive, they've contributed significantly to the castle's reputation as a haunted location, attracting enthusiasts of history, architecture, and the supernatural to explore its captivating mysteries. Today, Belcourt is owned and being lovingly restored by jewelry mogul and entrepreneur Carolyn Rafaelian, who continues to share its beauty and rich history with the public. #BelcourtCastle #GildedAgeArchitecture #AlvaBelmontLegacy #NewportHistory #ArchitecturalFusion #HauntedLegends #TinneyFamilyHauntings #HistoricalMysteries #GothicSplendor

Happy Birthday Horace Trumbauer! Buried at Laurel Hill West, Trumbauer is one of the most important architects of the Gilded Age, and we have him to thank for many of Philadelphia’s beautiful buildings and personal estates. His firm designed the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Jenkintown train station and the Jefferson Medical College main building among others. Trumbauer designed many of these famous buildings along with his chief designer and first Black student of the University of Pennsylvania’s architecture department, Julian Abele. Trumbauer designed the private estates of multiple other Laurel Hill residents, pictured here: 1. Lynnewood Hall, estate of Peter A.B. Widener @lynnewood_hall 2.
