Spring House Tour Benefit with @gvshp_nyc was fun today. I usually miss this kind of events but this year, I volunteered for it. Visited very nice brownstone houses ( no pic allowed) and the 19 MacDougal Alley. The structure was purchased by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the artist and one of the greatest patrons of the arts in the US. In 1931, the building was opened as the Whitney Museum of American Art and remained here until 1953. The ornate 20-foot-tall fireplace and ceiling in the original Whitney Studio is a masterpiece commissioned by Robert Winthrop Chandler. . . . #gertrudevanderbiltwhitneystudio #whitneymuseum #villagepreservation #westvillagenyc #nyclandmarks #artartart #artstudio

A side of the Plymouth Church (complex) in the golden light of this rainy Sunday. Besides claiming that Lincoln used to pray in pew 89, the church has a rich (and complicated) history with ties to anti-slave movements. We were deeply saddened to learn of great American artist Frank Stella’s death yesterday at his West Village home. Stella not only revolutionized the art world, shifting the direction from Abstract Expression to Minimalism, he was also a wonderful friend and neighbor, who was deeply rooted in this neighborhood. In 2006, Village Preservation began a campaign to save his longtime former studio at 128 East 13th Street — a former horse auction mart and onetime women’s assembly line training center he repurposed as an art studio — from planned demolition for a new condo tower. That effort resulted in the building being landmarked and still standing today, and in 2021 we placed a plaque on the building to forever mark its connection to Stella. The artist was kind enough to join us for the virtual unveiling ceremony, and shared stories of his time there as well as his life and work in the neighborhood and beyond. You can go to the link in our bio to learn more about that and see the video with Frank Stella. #FrankStella #GreatAmericanArtists #NYChistory #minimalism #greenwichvillage #greenwichvillagenyc #southofunionsquare #saveourhistory #NYClandmarks

Did you know that picnicking and ball games were once prohibited in Central Park to preserve its original pastoral character? Conversely, there have been proposals to make drastic changes to the park, such as building an underground garage for 30,000 cars, creating imitation battlefield trenches during WWI to promote war bond sales, and even demolishing Belvedere Castle. . As New York City’s population grew in the early 20th century, the purpose of parks evolved to include more recreational uses. However, safeguarding Central Park from commercial and other intrusions has been essential to maintaining its integrity. . Before the 1965 Landmarks Law, groups like the Citizens Union were instrumental in preserving Central Park's pastoral character. Years later, the Citizens Union lobbied against billboard interests, advancing legislative proposals that would allow the regulation of private property for aesthetic and historic purposes. The billboard battle, after many defeats, led to the adoption of legislation that enabled the modern legal framework for historic preservation. . Learn more about the Citizens Union’s involvement in historic preservation campaigns in our preservation history database. Link in bio! . May is National Preservation Month! This year's theme is "People Saving Places," to honor all the people who work to save our historic assets every day. One way you can celebrate is by checking out the "Homes of Preservationists" layer of Village Preservation's Greenwich Village Historic District Map + Tours (link in bio). We've highlighted the homes of those who fought to preserve the integrity of Greenwich Village even before it became a landmarked district, such as 37 Bank Street, the home of Claire and Stanley Tankel, who helped lead efforts to make Washington Square Park permanently car-free; and 44 West 9th Street, home of Margot Gayle, who organized the Village Neighborhood Committee in the 1950s and was instrumental to the successful campaign that saved the Jefferson Market Courthouse building from demolition. This first image is writer, urban theorist, and inspirational activist Jane Jacobs, and the second is of her home at 555 Hudson Street, another stop on the tour, as taken by Linda Yowell (@lindayowell) in 1999. #NationalPreservationMonth #SavingPlaces #JaneJacobs #HistoricPreservation #Landmarks #NYCLandmarks #GreenwichVillage #GreenwichVillageHD #GreenwichVillageNYC

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒𝐀 🇺🇸 : 🌳 Despite not being the largest, Central Park is the most visited park in the USA , with an average of 42 million visitors per year. Here a few reasons why 🌳 It is the most filmed location in the world, with over 532 movies shot there. 🌳 The park was built on the site of a former village called Seneca Village, which was home to freed American slaves and German and Irish residents. They were forced to leave the village they founded in 1825. 🌳 When designing the park, the architects wanted to make Central Park a microcosm of the state of New York. 🌳 Central Park was the first landscaped park in the USA. It was modeled after the parks in Paris and London. 🌳 The park is defined by meandering paths that curve from one point to the next, and they were intentionally built that way. 🌳 There are more than 10,000 benches in Central Park, and the Adopt-A-Bench program was started in 1986 to increase maintenance funding for the park. 🌳 Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx is the largest park in NYC, but Central Park remains THAT GIRL 💅🏾 Save for Later! And Add Central Park to your New York City Itinerary 🗺️ #newyorkcity #newyork #centralpark #thingstodoinnyc #travelgram

🎶 I laughed in your face and said “You’re not Dylan Thomas, I’m not Patti Smith. This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel, we’re modern idiots.” 🎶 Obviously I had to stop by the latest addition to the @taylorswift NYC canon as featured in #TTPD - the iconic @hotelchelsea, located at 222 (!!!) West 23rd St. Welsh poet Dylan Thomas famously drank himself to death while staying at the hotel in 1953. The legendary punk poet and musician Patti Smith lived at the Chelsea Hotel with Robert Mapplethorpe in 1969 (side note: I highly recommend Smith’s incredible memoir, “Just Kids”). I had a delightful Chelsea Morning cocktail at the Lobby Bar. Drinks are expensive but the service and atmosphere are excellent. I’ve included photos of the inside of the hotel and some of the art. I also had to include a selfie at magic hour because there is nothing better! The hotel and bar were not any more crowded than they would be on a busy Sunday but I expect that as #Swifties visit #NewYorkCity, they’ll add the hotel to their itinerary. Seeing it with my own eyes for the first time was an incredibly powerful sensation. Being one of the most known landmarks of the world, the Statue of Liberty transmits a very majestic vibe, and is indeed really huge. In a certain way, its like the Eiffel Tower (they even have the same engineer), as each represents an integral and iconic part of some of the most famous cities in the world. Both of them simbolise historical and cultural values of the respective countries, and despite being extremely touristic, still make a huge impact when seen for the first time! 🇺🇸🇫🇷💙🥪🥐🗽 When travelling, do you prefer the famous touristic spots like these, or the hidden gems and secret places known just by locals? ✨ NYC History Saturday ✨ 📍 Washington Square Arch Hey there! Have you ever been to Washington Square Park in New York City? It's a pretty cool place with lots of things to do and see, like musicians playing music, people having picnics, and even a big fountain! But have you ever noticed the big white marble structure at the north end of the park? That's the Washington Square Arch! The arch was actually built way back in 1892 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington, the first president of the United States. And do you know what's really cool? The arch was actually designed by a woman named Stanford White! She was one of the first female architects in the country and she did an amazing job with the arch. Over the years, the arch has become an important symbol of New York City and it's even been featured in movies and TV shows! But that's not all - the arch has also played an important role in some of the city's most important events, like when people gathered there to celebrate the end of World War II in 1945. So next time you're in Washington Square Park, take a closer look at the arch and remember its important history! #nyc #manhattan #nyclandmarks #newyorkcity #historical

Happy #ArborDay! In 2009, the Commission designated the New York Botanical Garden Museum Building, Fountain of Life, and Tulip Tree Alleé in the Bronx. The Garden, founded in 1891, was the first American museum devoted solely to botany. #NYCLandmarks

#HappyBirthday to award-winning architect I.M. Pei, born #OnThisDay in 1917 in #Guangzhou, #China. Pei was a world-renowned architect whose acclaimed designs include the #LouvrePyramid in Paris, the National Art Gallery’s East Wing in Washington D.C., as well as several #NewYorkCity structures such as the #FourSeasons Hotel and the Sundrome of #JFK airport. In 1964-1967 I.M. Pei & Associates designed University Village/Silver Towers on the superblock between West Houston and Bleecker Streets. The design represents an important moment in the evolution of Pei’s career, in modern design in general, and in #GreenwichVillage and #NewYorkCity architectural history. These buildings are an unusually sensitive and sophisticated manifestation of 1960s #modern design and some of New York’s most successful examples of cast-in-place #concrete #architecture. The design won the@aianational National Honor Award and the @cityclubny Albert S. Bard Award in 1967. Village Preservation proposed and successfully fought to have University Village/Silver Towers designated as an individual NYC landmark in 2008, preventing NYU from erecting a 400 ft. tall tower on the site. Time to celebrate: Today is Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday and New Yorkers are fortunate to have many of his projects in our backyard. The landscape architecture firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, and later of his sons (known as the Olmsted Brothers), produced designs and plans for over 350 parks, campuses and other projects throughout the United States and Canada. Here are images of two of my favorite NY parks: Central and Prospect. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #Frederick Law Olmsted @ProspectPark @ProspectParkConservancy @AudubonCenter @TheBoathouse @ProspectParkAlliance #BeauxArtsNY #NYCLandmarks #Architecture @CentralPark @CentralParkConservancy #SheepMeadow #NYCParks #SpringInNY #SATW

LIKE AND FOLLOW US FOR MORE! Answer: 18 West 11th Street; Weather Underground townhouse • On March 6th, 1970, this property was involved in an accidental bombing by the Weather Underground group, causing the façade to collapse. • The former Greek Revival Townhome, initially built in 1845, was landmarked by New York. • In 1920, this home belonged to the cofounder of Merrill Lynch, Charles E. Merrill. • Architect Hugh Hardy’s renovation references the catastrophic event and was approved by the NYC Landmarks Commission in 1972 by 1 single vote • This raises the question of what a new building should look like in a landmarked historic district.
