John Wesley Powell was born today in 1834, he was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. But he is most famous for his 1869 geographic expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers. That expedition was 3 months long and the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. After that and a subsequent expedition down the canyon in 1871, he wrote "The Exploration of the Colorado," a fascinating read about his explorations and observations.
