Today in History - 2 May 1945: 2nd New Zealand Division liberates Trieste in Italy. The 2nd New Zealand Division's final charge of WWII in Europe covered over 220km in less than a week, attacking up the north-eastern edge of Italy, finally reaching the city of Trieste on 2 May 1945. They liberated Trieste just in time to witness the unconditional surrender of German forces in Italy. Proving to be a "helluva way to end a war" (as one soldier recorded in his diary), New Zealand troops in Trieste found themselves involved in what could be considered one of the first confrontations of the Cold War. Determined to occupy Trieste and incorporate it into Yugoslavia, tensions rose between the Western allies, local partisans, and units of Josip Tito's Fourth Yugoslav Army. The threat of violence increased as a Yugoslav demand for the Allies' withdrawal was stoutly refused by NZ Commander General Freyberg. As a result, when Victory in Europe (VE) Day was announced on 7 May, there was little celebration amongst the NZ troops who were still standing at arms and facing an uncertain peace. Following high level diplomatic discussions, the Yugoslavs withdrew on 11 June, and our kiwi soldiers could finally relax and, for many, prepare to head home. #nzarmymuseum #todayinhistory #worldwar2 #trieste #2nzdivision #nzmilitaryhistory

#OnThisDay May 1, 1931 The Empire State Building is officially dedicated in New York City. Rising majestically into the Manhattan skyline, the Empire State Building stands as a symbol of ambition, innovation, and resilience, embodying the spirit of the American Dream during the height of the Great Depression. Designed by architect William F. Lamb of the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the Empire State Building was conceived as a symbol of hope and progress amidst the economic turmoil of the 1930s. Construction of the building began in 1930, during the depths of the Great Depression, and proceeded at a rapid pace, with thousands of workers laboring tirelessly to erect the towering structure in record time. Standing at 1,454 feet tall, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world at the time of its completion, a title it held for nearly four decades until the construction of the World Trade Center in the early 1970s. The building's distinctive Art Deco design, characterized by its sleek lines, setbacks, and intricate detailing, captured the imagination of people around the world and set a new standard for skyscraper architecture. The dedication ceremony for the Empire State Building on May 1, 1931, was a grand affair, attended by dignitaries, politicians, and celebrities from around the world. President Herbert Hoover, who was unable to attend in person, pressed a button in Washington, D.C., to illuminate the building's lights remotely, officially signalling its completion and dedication to the world. From the moment of its dedication, the Empire State Building captured the public's imagination and became an enduring symbol of New York City and American ingenuity. Its towering presence on the Manhattan skyline made it a magnet for tourists and visitors, who flocked to its observation decks to take in breathtaking views of the city below. Battle of Chancellorsville : “Fighting Commences” : Federal infantry had concentrated near Chancellorsville, Virginia on April 30, 1863 and in concert with the Union force near Fredericksburg, Union General Joseph Hooker planned a double envelopment, attacking Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia from both the front and rear. : Hooker advanced from Chancellorsville toward Lee, but the Confederate general split his army in the face of superior numbers, leaving a small force at Fredericksburg to deter Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick from advancing, while he attacked Hooker’s advance with about four-fifths of his army. : On May 1, at 11 a.m. Confederate General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson advanced along two roads west toward Chancellorsville. McLaws’s division and the brigade of Brig. Gen. William Mahone on the turnpike, and Anderson’s other brigades and Jackson’s arriving units on the Plank Road. : At the same moment of Jackson’s advance, Hooker also advanced along three roads to the east. Two divisions of Meade’s V Corps moved along River Road in an attempt to locate Bank’s Ford, meanwhile Sykes Division moved on the Turnpike; and the entirety of Slocum’s XII Corps moved on the Plank Road. : The first shots rang out just after 11:00 a.m. as the massive movement of the armies collided. Confederate General Lafayette McLaws’s initial attack was successful in pushing back Union General George Sykes’s division, however, Sykes was able rally and his counterattack was able to reclaim much of the ground lost in the initial fray. : With things going mostly well for the Union army on the field at Chancellorsville on day 1, in the early afternoon of May 1, 1863, Union Commander Joseph Hooker halted his brief offensive despite the objections of his subordinates and ordered his men to withdraw back into the Wilderness and take defensive positions around Chancellorsville. : ⬇️ POST CONCLUDED IN THE COMMENTS ⬇️

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." — 1 Peter 4:8 --- Edward IV, as King, was expected to marry somebody of royal blood. Marriage was a diplomatic tool, cementing alliances. Elizabeth Woodville was far an ideal choice as a royal bride: she was the widow of a Lancastrian noble killed in battle, though her mother was Jacquetta of Luxemburg. But "King Edward, prompted by the ardour of youth and relying entirely on his own choice without consulting the nobles of the kingdom, privately married the widow of a certain knight, Elizabeth by name". (Croyland Chronicle) The marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville took place in secret on 1st May 1464 and lasted to Edward’s death (9th April 1483) and produced many children, the most notable of whom were the uncrowned Edward V and his brother Richard, the Princes in the Tower, along with Elizabeth of York who married Henry Tudor. #otd 1 May 1643: The King arrives safely back in Oxford with the Reading garrison. Meanwhile, Parliament forces under Sir Edward Hungerford arrive outside Wardour Castle, home of Lady Arundel, with an army of 1,300. I put these two images together to show the extent of the damage done. One of the biggest tragedies of the Civil Wars was the ruin of churches, castles, and countless religious images (statues, stained glass, fonts, altar rails, etc). Keep in mind, this was also the last gasp of “medieval” warfare, when castles served their actual purpose. #englishcivilwar #17thcentury #wardourcastle #militaryhistory #britishhistory #siege #civilwar #history #todayinhistory #dailyhistory #war #onthisday #england

TODAY IN HISTORY: May 1 - U-2 Incident 🇺🇸 🇷🇺 On May 1, 1960, at the height of the Cold War, a U.S. U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet airspace, leading to a major diplomatic crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was captured, and the incident exposed the extent of U.S. surveillance activities. This event, known as the U-2 Incident, had significant implications for international relations during a tense period of the Cold War. The U-2 Incident occurred during a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a fierce competition for military and ideological supremacy. Reconnaissance flights by high-altitude U-2 planes were part of the U.S. strategy to gather intelligence on Soviet military capabilities. The incident revealed the risks involved in espionage and the potential for such activities to escalate into open conflict. The immediate aftermath of the U-2 Incident was the collapse of a summit conference in Paris, which had been intended to ease Cold War tensions. The event hardened the Soviet stance against the United States and delayed any potential progress in arms control negotiations. It also led to increased skepticism among the U.S. allies regarding the American approach to the Cold War. In the long term, the U-2 Incident highlighted the need for improved communication channels between the superpowers, which eventually contributed to the establishment of the Moscow-Washington hotline. It also underscored the importance of intelligence in shaping foreign policy and the lengths nations would go to obtain it. The legacy of the U-2 Incident is still felt today. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of power during the Cold War and the ongoing relevance of espionage in international affairs. The incident has influenced how nations conduct surveillance and the protocols in place to manage the fallout from such activities. It also provides historical context for understanding current U.S.-Russia relations and the complexities of global espionage. #today #todayinhistory #history #aviation #plane #coldwar #russia #usa #spy

LOOK 👀 at the size of those links!!! TODAY IN HISTORY: 💥 (April 30th 1778) the Great Chain was first deployed across the Hudson River at West Point. It's amazing to see the huge links up close. Hopefully you get an idea from the photo, and can see how the bend in the river was a perfect place to locate the chain. (The bend in the river at West Point was the only major obstacle for shipping between New York City and Albany). West Point’s role in the American Revolution was critical because whoever controlled the Hudson River controlled communication between the New England states and those to the south. 🌺 The Americans realized this at the outset of the war and began to fortify the ground on both sides of the river, and later constructed a chain obstacle from West Point to Constitution Island. The British raided the island as part of a campaign to take the entire river. In 1778, the American shifted their emphasis to higher ground as West Point and its surrounding hills, building a fortress the British never challenged. Is West Point on your Bucket List? If it is, book a room at @thethayerhotel. 1 MAY, MAY DAY: Happy May Day, my friends! Today marks the height of spring. The days are getting longer, fields greener, flowers bursting, bees buzzing. The fits of winter have hit their last snooze and WE’RE AWAKE ALREADY! Being the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, celebration of this day has both deep roots in history and across cultures around the globe. Common to our Anglo-Saxon heritage in the US, this holiday has Celtic origin and is known for the pagan holiday Beltane, second most significant behind Samhain (Halloween). For obvious reasons, this holiday is a festival of rebirth. To celebrate all the traditions, get yourself some flowers, leave a basket of flowers on a neighbor’s doorstep, braid a crown of flowers to wear or gift, have some flowers for your table. Dancing around a Maypole with colorful ribbons isn’t as common anymore but do whatever makes ya happy. Today is all things spring so let’s go get sprung! (I chose to get a bouquet of big-bulbed, orange flowers for my table where I’ve been drawing with oil pastels. Even with all the colors of the rainbow in as many shades as man can make, aren’t those flowers the most beautifully saturated?) If you like these reminders to set the tone for your week and through the year, it’s not to late to get one of my limited edition 2024 calendars: https://shopwefancy.com/collections/2024-calendars-with-original-art-from-jennifer-s-levines-solamente-show #MayDay2024 #mayday #firepowerproductions #jennifire #wefancy #shopwefancy #pamperyourpeopleandspoilyourspace #flowerpower #flowerstagram #calendar2024 #TodayInHistory #letthelightshine #beltane #beltaneblessings #themoreyouknowthemoreyougrow #herecomesthesun #spring2024 #thegoodlife #springsprung #celebratelife #tiptoethroughthetulips #healthyhabits #flowerbasket #maypole #easterbonnet

On May 1, 1844, Henry Clay was nominated as the presidential candidate at the Whig National Convention. This was the 3rd time that Clay would run for president. 3️⃣ The 1st time he ran, Clay was one of 4 candidates running in the 1824 election. Ultimately, John Quincy Adams was chosen by the House of Representatives after no candidate won an electoral majority. Clay received the least number of electoral votes in that election and was thus not one of the 3 candidates eligible to be considered by the House under the 12th Amendment. 👎 Again, in 1832, Clay was one of 4 candidates. In that election, Clay came in 2nd, but Andrew Jackson won that election by a landslide. 👎 The 1844 election would be Clay's last quest for the White House. A Whig had been elected in the last election, in 1840. In that election, Whig candidate William Henry Harrison defeated Martin Van Buren in a landslide. But Harrison died after only a month in office and his Vice President, John Tyler, became President. Although Tyler started his presidential term as a Whig, he was expelled from the party during his term because he vetoed bills passed by the Whig-controlled Congress. 👎 In 1844, the Whigs unanimously chose Clay as their candidate. He ran against James Polk, who favored expansionism later called Manifest Destiny. Polk and the Democrats advocated for the annexation of Texas and believed that the U.S. had a claim to all of Oregon. This platform appealed to both the Northern and Southern expansionists; the latter focused on adding Texas as a slave state. Clay lost again, but this time it was a close election.

🧪 Mixing up a poisonous potion... This painting sparked some controversy in the past. 👉 Frederick Sandys (born #OnThisDay in 1829) submitted this work to the Royal Academy for display. Although agreed to be of quality, the painting was ultimately rejected. It remains unknown whether the rejection was because of internal politics or the subject matter. A critic the next year predicted it would be 'either vastly admired or supremely detested.' 🐸 The artist paints a woman so enraged by her deceitful husband that she commits murder with a deadly mixture. Medea was a popular mythological subject in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. – 'Medea' by Frederick Sandys (1829–1904) 📷 @birmingham_mag #TodayInHistory #Medea #BirminghamMuseum #FrederickSandys
