“Down the Great Unknown," by Edward Dolnick is one of the best Powell biographies that this Worm has wiggled through to date. Whereas Powell’s own account of his journey (“The Exploration of the Colorado River and its Canyons”) tends to exaggerate the nobility of the scientific work and downplay the hardship, this book gives you the juice!⁠ 🐛⁠ Drawing heavily on the journals of the other men on the trip (George Bradley and Jack Sumner in particular), Dolnick’s well-researched work fills in the details behind the scenes. The personalities and fortitude of the other men shine through their own words, as does the antipathy that some came to feel toward their leader. Dolnick also does a great job of putting the expedition into historical context. John Wesley Powell was born today in 1834, he was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. But he is most famous for his 1869 geographic expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers. That expedition was 3 months long and the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. After that and a subsequent expedition down the canyon in 1871, he wrote "The Exploration of the Colorado," a fascinating read about his explorations and observations. Transformation, back on the silty river that taught me all the foundations of how to row a boat. If you’re driving a 28ft vehicle, you definitely need to get there early to get the good spaces in the parking lot! Windows Arch - we got there early and even managed to sit playing cars under that arch, enjoying the views for ages. . Top tip- if you have a camper-van, get into the park before the gates are manned and drive straight to the point you are most desperate to see in peace and quiet. Arches National Park lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, it’s known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east. Long, thin Landscape Arch stands in Devils Garden to the north. Arches national park was beautiful beyond belief I’ve been feeling so blessed for the time we’ve been spending in Utah. The sandstone of Arches National Park is colored red due to iron. White areas occur where water has either removed the iron or bleached the rock chemically.
