Places Tuesday. BOLTON PERCY is a small village in the north of Yorkshire with its main nearby town being Tadcaster. Following the Norman Conquest (1066-1071) the village was held by a William de Malet, who was the county’s first high sheriff but by 1284 the village Lordship came to the Percey family and the name changed with the addition of ‘Percy’. The Lordship then passed to the Vesci family, the Beaumonts and then the Fairfax family, who were linked to the village for several centuries and who have memorials in the village church. The current village church was built by Thomas Parker in the 15th century, he was a rector of the parish who had employed the same architectural ideas to what was used in the building of York Minster and the church was considered a significant church in the diocese of York. A rectory was built for the church in 1698 and was formerly the residence of the Archdeacon of York, who became rector of the church in 1866, moving himself, his family and many servants into the property (he was very highly paid).
A railway station functioned here between 1839-1965 but this has since been demolished and now forms part of a nature reserve. A lovely quintessential English village.

#boltonpercy #boltonpercygatehouse #tadcaster #yorkshirevillage #village #yorkshire #normanconquest #highsheriff #britishtelephonebox #redtelephonebox #lordship #buildinglovers #travelphotography #fairfax #yorkminster #quintessential #railway #naturereserve #nature #rector #dioceseofyork #york #demolished #history #oldvillage #villagechurch #archdeacon #villagelife #percey #parish
