An early painting by David Prentice dated 1958. I can’t work out the location.. if anyone knows then welcome some help … a TWA billboard a Guinness Advert and a Dolcis shop sign (blast from the past there!) all throw me in different directions 🤷♂️ Anyway .. Prentice was born in 1934 in Birmingham and studied at Moseley School Of Art there. He’s perhaps best remembered not only as a gifted painter but also the founder of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham - a gallery that pushed the boundaries of art in the 60s and 70s - particularly in Birmingham which I think is fair to say hadn’t been a hotbed of art. In the 90s he moved to Malvern and set up a studio there painting the hills locally in a colourful semi abstract style - works which were exhibited at the John Davies Gallery in Stow On The Wold in 2003. His works are now held in the collections of the V&A Museum, Whitworth Manchester, Art Institute Of Chicago and the Arts Council Of Great Britain. He died in 2014. The hidden life of the artist is at the heart of a new exhibition coming soon to our Cirencester shop. Cotswold artists @jeremybrookesartist and @hawkemlou are joining forces with Cheltenham author @harriethitchen to create a special exhibition at Crumps Barn Studio that brings together the printed word, painting and sculpture. Harriet says, “My debut novel is about revealing the secret life of the artist. I was inspired by forgotten Pre-Raphaelite painter Joanna Boyce whose work was almost completely destroyed during the Bath Blitz.” The show at our shop and gallery on The Waterloo will examine how the life of the artist is revealed in their work. Louise Hawkins has created a series of still life paintings. “In Harriet’s novel, the artist finds her true self through the making of her art. I decided to explore the idea that my work always has an autobiographical element – the objects that find their way into my paintings are there for a reason.” Sculptor Jeremy Brookes has produced a series of large scale wooden vessels. “My work is abstract, but it is fundamentally a self-portrait. For me, art is a way of looking at the unknown – the unconscious parts of ourselves.” An informal Private View for Hidden Lives exhibition will be held on Saturday 3 June. It will be a drop-in event during opening hours 10:30 to 4:30. Admission is free and there is no need to pre-book. Harriet says, “They say an author is someone who paints with words. It's tricky to show long and wide art on Instagram - so these superb 'Walk' multi-aperture prints, by Catherine Williams, are more like walk glimpses than full promenades. The two main framed pieces are 'Thames Walk' and 'Cirencester Walk' - various print formats picking out landmarks and views in both locations. A clever and engaging idea which we're going to put to good use with a Tetbury town strolling and sketching workshop this summer and, exclusive to us, a new 'Tetbury Walk' artwork by Catherine herself. It will all coincide with our summer landscape show. If you're interested, the workshop will be for a day, include a sandwich lunch and an end-of-day debrief and display. The date is Wednesday 26 July. Pen and ink work followed by a printing follow-up day, for those who're keen. I’ve just done a little count up and we’re currently displaying a total of 162 paintings in the gallery today. Oil paintings that span the entire 20thC but predominantly mid / late 20th Century. I don’t think there’s another retail art gallery in the country to boast such a stock from the 20th Century. Equally our prices are very competitive - working on turnover as opposed to profit which is unlike any other gallery. I set up the gallery because I’m passionate about art and how it can change the whole feel of a house for the better. So many homes have their walls decorated with mass produced prints or inherited b&w Victorian prints.. or endless family photographs or even nothing at all … soulless and impersonal (well apart from the family photos …which takes it completely the other way!) Why is it that so many people focus on everything else but what goes on the walls .. upholstery, curtains, colour schemes, wallpaper, furniture … but then forget about the art. Is it because they don’t know where to buy good art without feeling intimidated or is it because they think art is just what you see in the high street gallery chains up and down the country 🤫 .. it’s not !! Buying art doesn’t have to be intimidating and doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have original paintings in here ranging from £150 to £1500+. These were painted 30 years ago and have a sort of Northern School Lowry-esque feel to them.
