Consumerism is the theory that individuals who consume goods and services in large quantities beyond those necessary for survival will be better off. Look at the state of our world. Are we really "better off?" This "theory" sounds more like the exploitation of our resources and a nesting place for greed where people become one more product to abuse and misuse for the financial gain of others. With the disproportionate rise in taxes and interest rates of the prices of "goods and services," how are we supposed to be financially solvent? It's not like our salaries are going up to match the exponential increment in the cost of living. It is harder and harder to even take care of basic needs such as food, housing, and health. This is what our so-called "commodity" looks like nowadays. We're getting f*cked so that corporations can make a profit. How much longer are we going to live like this? Do we have a choice? I am excited to announce that My Character will be in an exhibit at the esteemed Duncan Miller Gallery in LA. The exhibit centers around the hand made photographic process called Gum Bichromate. I am using it in a very unique way, putting layers upon layers onto a traditional panel process that dates back centuries. I am mixing these anachronistic processes with the idea of our consumerism nightmare. The object is a container ship called MINE. It is filled with containers labeled with all the things that make up the stuff of a person, such as my boots, my toys, my nourishment, my phones, my computer, my religion, my colors, my porography, my books. . This work was finished in 2016. It was before we knew the words supply chain, but, predicted the mess of relying on stuff, especially stuff shipped across the world. 🛍️💲💳😰Three years ago, my self-care routine was something right off an Instagram post and let me be honest, it broke the bank. I had all the skin care devices and lines, I had the nail designs, I had all the books telling me how to care for myself, yoga mats (welp, I still have those), and you name it, I had it. The thing was, I didn't have enough time in my day to do all the things that had been preached to me about effective self-care. I was actually HURTING MYSELF by CAUSING STRESS and FINANCIAL BURDEN to do all this self-care and guess what, I didn't EVEN believe in it. I was just following what everyone else told me I should do! 🥴WOW!!!! (It's quite embarrassing when I put it into written words) I learned about true self-care when I was healing. 🧘🧑🌾🐐🐮🐴🦮🛏️🕯️🤾Now, I have a basic skincare routine that is almost all natural. I eat healthier, practice yoga, meditate, breathe, hike in nature, ground myself, listen to calming music, go to sound baths, follow good sleep hygiene, paint, read, write, cook, garden and hang with animals as much as humanly possible. I let my inner child out to play and I make time for rest and relaxation. ⛔🚫🙅🚫⛔AND GUESS WHAT, I say no A LOT. I say no to gossip, to toxic people, invites when they don't sound like a real good time. I say no to comparisons, judging others, and to stress. I say no to anything that will bring me down. 🆓 And the cost? Minimal, if not free. The cost to my nervous system, zero, zilch, nada. 🌿❤️🩹🫶💕🥰I found what works for me and I do it for the enjoyment of doing it. Self-care doesn't have to be a routine. I thought today I’d share some thoughts on my current read and showcase some of my favourite Non-Fiction books. The wonderful team @bloomsburypublishing sent me a proof of this one a few months ago, I had a feeling this book was going to make me angry but I had no idea that it would turn into one of my favourite non-fiction books. There’s so much I have learnt and so much I want to say but I think this is a book you really should read yourself, I mean I could ramble on all day about the topics covered. The introduction set the scene perfectly and some of the quotes simply blew my mind, I guess it’s all about seeing the bigger picture. “ This sense of unfreedom is grounded in the deep disparities of power that exist within capitalist societies - many of which are completely invisible. Most people are denied autonomy over their lives, yet we are consistently told we are free to choose the way we live. Life under capitalism means life under a system in which decisions about how we work, how we live and what we buy have already been taken by somebody else. Life under capitalism means living in a planned economy while being told that you are free.” Facebook, Amazon, the banks, back handers, consumerism, monopolies, this book covers it all and it’s written in a format that’s so accessible. This had the potential to be boring but it was everything but. I’ve got a further 50 pages to go but this is going to be a five star for me, without a doubt. I’ve already ordered myself another copy so that it can sit proudly amongst one of my favourite book shelves. I have some spicy news to share! ♨️ Good. Now that I have your attention, let's talk about FOOD WASTAGE. India faces the paradox of being self-sufficient with food but not in food security. Not only is the food itself wasted, but also many collateral resources like water, labour, livestock, manure and pesticides, logistics, everything that goes from planting the sapling to it being sold to the end consumer. Or in the case of non-vegetarian, as harsh as it sounds, an animated life gone to waste. The Food Waste Index measures food waste at retail and consumer level (households and food service). It is jointly authored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and WRAP, a UK based organisation which pointed out that we waste 1 BILLION MEALS PER DAY. Almost one-fifth of all the food produced is wasted while 783 million people go hungry with the major contributors of this colossal waste being - households and the Food Service industry. While zero-waste meals have become a new clique for the FnB industry, this is what we can do at home - 1. Please, please buy only what's necessary. It's not glamorous to do a stocking and organising video of your refrigerators with copious amounts of produce. It's stupid, wasteful and reeks of non-sustainable practices. 2. Use the odd bits and ends to create stocks, chips and incorporate in garnishings and dressings. Even minute actions like cutting off the tops of veggies on a minimal scale is helpful. 3. If no one is eating the leftovers, please be generous with other humans and animals. Cook and preserve in a way where the transfer can happen in a dignified and considerate manner. 4. Finish every grain, every pulse and every shred on your plate. Wipe your plates CLEAN. The kind of wastage I see on the plates of consumers in restaurants and especially weddings makes me absolutely furious. Takeaway even if it's just 2 bites and ffs only serve yourself how much you can eat in places you cannot pack up. Whatever you send back in restaurants, is THROWN away. Not everyone can make and implement policies, get grants and conduct research to be sustainable, but the least you can do, is start from your own home.

The event was a social-spiritual performance art project meant as a spiritual--and tangible--release for the end of the school year. One student brought a box of papers and books to be burned. I brought a box of discontinued Printery House cards. There happened to be a guest priest on retreat who came out and gave his blessing for the Column. Tant que nous en prenons pas conscience, nous sommes consumés par la fausse croyance que le bonheur s’achète. J’ai pris conscience que mes achats compulsifs et les objets non nécessaires provenaient de mes propres insécurités mais aussi de cette injonction à correspondre aux codes de son statut social. En apprenant à m’aimer de l’intérieur et tel que je suis, en comprenant que mon aisance financière n’avait pas à transparaître dans le monde physique, ma detox consumériste a commencé. Je me suis libéré des chaînes du passé, celles d’avoir trop manqué. Celles du présent, du stress environnant qui pousse à la récompense immédiate. Feeling deeply content after yesterday’s yard sale. It was such a joy to see treasures that I’ve long loved find new homes. It was both a satisfying day in and of itself, and also part of the broader arc that is a theme for me this year. And that theme is spaciousness. I am craving spaciousness more than I am craving stuff. And this is coming from a girl who loves her stuff. Never a minimalist, I love being surrounded by beautifully curated, deeply meaningful objects. I love dressing and adorning myself in them as well. However. It’s become too much. When I did my year ahead spread, the theme card for the year was the empty room. When light, spaciousness, potential, possibility. When dark, addiction, insatiability, more for more’s sake. And so I’ve made commitments. No new supplies in my business. Nothing but the absolute essentials. I’ve made a few exceptions here and there, but I’m happy to say I have stuck with the spirit of that commitment. And in my regular life, no new things. I allow myself to buy new consumables, obviously. And everything else is secondhand. Again, I’ve made a few exceptions here and there, but I’ve stuck with the spirit of this commitment as well. The word I chose for this year is settle. To settle more deeply into my life, my home, what I already have. And this yard sale felt like that. There were things that were precious to me in a season that no longer fit into this life, this home, this version. And it has been hard to let them go. I’ve clung. And yesterday was a beautiful and long awaited release. And there was labor involved. And that was part of the magic too. It would have been easy to load up my car and drive everything to the goodwill and just drop it off. And goddess knows, I’ve done that plenty. I’ve made my excess someone else’s labor to figure out. And this last week or so, I’ve done my own labor. I’ve addressed my own excesses. And in knowing how much labor is involved in rehoming these things, it certainly does strengthen my resolve to think long and hard before bringing in anything new, even secondhand new. And so I sit here in satisfaction, knowing the work is not done, but we are well on our way.
