Book 17 for #ReadingChallenge2024 carries on with #scifi, and a return to #KimStanleyRobinson with #RedMoon. Not going to lie, this book is a weird one. Set roughly 30 years into the future, where the moon is being colonised and revolution in both the US and China is in the air as the backdrop, the story sells itself as a near-future murder mystery wrapped up in political intrigue. And if that’s the story you fancy, then I’d advise you stay clear of this book. Because it just isn’t it. Or: it is but not in the way you expect. I very much enjoy KSR, and even if I sometimes find his stories slightly detached from my liking I’ve always enjoyed his narrative style. This style is very much lacking here, and it’s a shame because there’s a grand concept in this book: about the path our global social-economic society is going down, how the people will strive and revolt for change and fair representation, and how AI can be used for good. That’s all classic KSR. But…the vehicle used to convey this concept is a shoddy tale of political intrigue where the key protagonists are just…stupid. Not naive, just stupid. You can see ‘twists’ coming from chapters away. The narrative is broken up with reflections on Chinese cultural history (insightful) and AI development (done much better in his book #Aurora). And for a book that’s supposed be set in the Moon, a good two thirds of it takes place on Earth. I got the feeling reading this that the concept was there, but the narrative wasn’t nailed down. So unlike his other works, the message of this book (that people have the power to bring about change) doesn’t hit as strongly as it could have. Which is a shame. Side note: this was published in 2018 and its praise of the then (and still) current Chinese leadership has not have aged well. The main saving grace in the book is the relationship between two of the protagonists, Fred and Qi. Over the course of the book the evolution of their relationship is quite lovely. The backbone to an otherwise flaccid story. Whilst not a disaster, and with his typical high-concept hat on, there are other KSR books I’d recommend way ahead of this one.

Do you like big ideas? Are you also concerned about climate change and conservation? Does "monetary policy, but make it fiction" sound appealing? Have I got the book for you! But seriously, The Ministry for the Future will appeal to policy geeks. Barack Obama loved it. Ezra Klein blurbed it. It was recommended to me by multiple nerdy friends. And they were right: I found a lot to like here. The book loosely follows two main characters, Mary, the Irish head of the titular Ministry for the Future, and Frank, the American aid worker who survives a deadly heat wave in India - his harrowing experience is depicted in the gripping opening chapter - but I wouldn't pick it up purely for the story. There's kind of a plot and there's kind of some character development, but the characters' lives outside of their connections to climate change are not explored in depth. They're not the point here. This is like the climate/economic policy equivalent of hard science-fiction, where the characters are primarily vessels for exploring ideas. The chapters, which are generally short, rotate POVs. Frank and Mary recur, while others pop up for limited but memorable runs, often to illustrate how a particular solution might play out in the real world. Some chapters take the form of meeting notes, some are lecture transcripts - oh, and every now and then, there’s a brief and playful POV from the perspective of, say, a photon or a carbon molecule. What ideas are explored? Characters mourn the tragedy of the time horizon, where damage - some of which is irreversible - that won’t manifest until the distant-ish future is discounted due to the belief that later generations will be better equipped to deal with that harm. They ask: are there ways to give value to future generations? Could capitalism be updated with an economic system aimed at maximizing planetary health rather than profit? Is violence ever justified if it would bring about needed reform? In trying to craft a better future, Robinson’s characters consider a variety of solutions ranging from tax and banking reforms to geoengineering to wildlife corridors and worker cooperatives. Thought-provoking and hopeful-ish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished reading "The Ministry for the Future" by Kim Stanley Robinson. The Ministry for the Future is a fictional branch of the UN that is set up in 2025 to advocate for future generations and protect the living creatures and biosphere of the Earth in the face of climate change. It follows the Ministry through its infancy as it establishes its objectives, struggles to gain legitimacy, and sees early successes. Other players include the Children of Kali, an India-based radical ecoterrorism group, world governments, and several specific individuals in and out of the Ministry. A stunning look at the near future possibilities of climate change and what we can do about. This book has a central narrative that is interspersed with science and ideas on how to slow, prevent, and reverse climate change. While the outlook of climate change can be anxiety inducing, and Robinson doesn't shy away from the massive negative impacts of climate change, he tells a deeply hopeful and optimistic story about how we can affect positive change. What I like about his vision is that he doesn't put the weight of responsibility on the individual, like we see a lot in the media. His vision is a combination of international legislation, financial reform, direct action, urban replanning, technological advances, and also individual change. Another excellent book by my favourite science fiction author. Un livre que je voulais lire depuis longtemps, qui se situe entre roman d'anticipation et essai écologique et économique. Beaucoup beaucoup d'informations (facilement vérifiables par ailleurs) et qui demandent de la réflexion.📚💻 Je recommande vraiment de lire ce livre, il n'est certes pas évident mais il apporte tellement d'éléments et de questionnement qui sont très intéressants et permettent de réfléchir à la société du futur. Vagues de chaleur meurtrières, fonte des glaciers et montée des océans, réchauffement climatique. L’humanité est menacée, le monde décide d’établir le ministère du futur: mission - trouver des solutions pour protéger les créatures vivantes et défendre le droit des générations futures. Les nations les plus exposées aux dommages collatéraux et humains et qui payent le plus lourd tribu du réchauffement climatique ne sont pas celles qui y ont contribué le plus.Alors,face à l’injustice, la colère gronde: la population se révolte et décide de faire bouger les choses et attaquer les responsables de la calamité à la source. Chapitres courts et très différents qui dressent le portrait d’un monde en crise: mais pas que. Des solutions et des actions sont possibles et ce livre en dresse une liste impressionnante, sont-elles toutes réalistes, les spécialistes le diront, mais elles ont le mérite d’exister et de donner espoir face à une paralysie fataliste et mortifère devant l’urgence d’agir. Opravdu mám pocit, že se snažíme svět změnit. A pak mě unese jeden chlápek a řekne mi co si o tom našem snažení myslí. Nepřestává mi to vrtat hlavou a pak konečně pochopím, že toho opravdu neděláme dost. Pro nás lidi, pro vše živé… pro naši planetu. 🌿V roce 2025 postihne Indii vlna obrovských veder. Miliony lidí zemře. Je čas změnit svět, je čas změnit budoucnost. 🌿Tahle kniha není obyčejným sci-fi počinem. Je to kniha promyšlená do nejmenšího detailu. Je to kniha, která se zabývá naší budoucností a konkrétně změnou klimatu. Já osobně věřím, že příroda i klima se mění k horšímu podle toho jak se ke světu chováme. Vím, že to není názor všech a nechci vířit vody ale tahle kniha je rozhodně víří. Není to kniha pro každého, je docela složitá na čtení. Střídají se tu kapitoly lidí například Mary nebo Franka ale také tu jsou kapitoly kdy mluví věci nebo kde jsou vědci, kteří zkoumají ledovce a podobně. Možná to teď nemusí dávat smysl ale nakonec to utvoří celek. Kniha obsahuje spoustu témat jako je tání ledovců, vlna veder, záplavy, uprchlické tábory a další. Je to rozhodně zajímavé čtení k zamyšlení. Z velké části se děj odehrává ve Švýcarsku kde sídlí ministersto a bylo moc hezké tuto zemi poznávat. Knihu doporučuji všem, kreří čtou rádi o budoucnosti. Také těm, které zajímá nejen naše klima ale celá planeta. V knize je spoustu odborných názvů, jmen i míst a méně přímé řeči. Na to pozor ne káždému to může sednout. New York im Jahr 2140. Der Meeresspiegel ist stark angestiegen und New York wurde teilweise überflutet. Doch das Leben geht weiter, auch wenn es viele Todesopfer gab haben die Menschen sich mit der Situation arrangiert, die überfluteten Stockwerke wurden abgedichtet und auf der Höhe des Wasserspiegels Bootshäuser eingebaut. Die Bewohner der verbliebenen Gebäude müssen enger zusammenrücken, das Essen ist relativ knapp und Wohnraum Mangelware. Zeitgleich mit einem anonymen Kaufangebot für ihr Gebäude, was eher einer feindlichen Übernahme gleichkommen würde, bemerken die Bewohner des Met Life Building, dass durch Sabotage am Gebäude an verschiedenen Stellen Wasser eingedrungen ist.... Trotz des Klimathemas keine düstere Dystopie, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Wer überhaupt kein Interesse an Vorgängen am Finanzmarkt hat, sollte die Lektüre aber vielleicht eher vermeiden. Und ich muss kritisch anmerken, dass sich manche Kapitel in die Länge gezogen haben wie klebriger Kaugummi. Hay historias mejores e historias peores, pero en general aportan nueva información sobre hechos acaecidos en la trama de los libros y sobre personajes más o menos importantes. Gaudé, prix Goncourt de surcroît. 2/ Sur l'écologie, un livre futuriste qui connait du succès et qui a pour thème principal ce qui nous occupe : "Le ministère du futur" de KS Robinson. 3/ pour la bio, A. De Caunes m'avait donné envie l'année dernière de lire "Life" du célèbre guitariste des Rolling Stones, K. Richards. Gene Wolfe and JK Potter?! This might be the best book ever. For this #genewolfewednesday I’d like to present PS Publishing’s signed and numbered edition of The Very Best of Gene Wolfe (released back in 2009). I got very fortunate and found a reasonably priced copy on eBay. This is one of my favorite Wolfe limited editions. Not only does it feature Potter’s fantastic dust jacket art, but collects (as the title states) some of Wolfe’s very best short fiction.

Lucky Strike Uzun zamandır bilimkurgu temalı kitaplardan okumuyordum. Okuduğumda ise İthaki yayınlarının bilimkurgu serisini takip ediyordum, bu kitapla tanışmamız biraz rastlantı sonucu oldu çünkü okuyan çok fazla kişi görmedim, kapağını görünce direk okumaya karar verdim. ( Kapak tasarımlarının önemi.) Yazar, Mars Üçlemesi adında bir serisiyle tanınıyormuş ama ben o kitaplarını da duymamıştım. Benim için bu kitap tanışma kitabı oldu. Kitapta, Hiroşima ve Nagazaki şehirlerine atılan atom bombasının farklı bir versiyonu anlatılmış. Kitap üç bölümden oluşuyor, ilk bölümde January isimli bir karakterin saldırı ekibine nasıl girdiğini ve ruh halini okuyoruz. Saldırı grubunun ruh halinin, içindeki gelgitlerinin bize güzel aktarıldığını düşünüyorum. İkinci bölümde ise bazı parametreler farklı olsaydı nasıl olurdu gibi alternatif seçenekler anlatılmış. Örnek vermek gerekirse, hava bulutlu olsaydı, başka bir adaya atılsaydı yada başka bir yol bulunsaydı gibi örneklerin içi doldurularak bize alternatif sonlar hazırlanmış. (Benim en sevdiğim kısım bu kısım oldu.) Üçüncü bölümde ise tamamen yazara ayrılmış, yazarla sohbet havasında bir söyleşi gerçekleştirilmiş. Açıkçası bu tarz bir kitap daha önce okumadığım için bana değişik geldi. O sebeple beğendim yada beğenmedim diyemiyorum. Sadece alternatif tarih fikri hoşuma gitti, zaten kısacık bir kitap belki şans vermek istersiniz. With the recent hot 🥵 weather , and forecasts to breach 3.5°C for global temperatures, it was a hard sobering read. Almost like #thoughtexperiment of what would we do if we experience a deadly heat wave ? Would each country act without regards to UN compact against Geo engineering, raise of ecoterrorism, climate refugees .. there were bold projects discussed in the book that I just heard on March 2024 on BBC like efforts to retain the thickness of sea ice in Antarctica , and solar radiation management SRM . The writer did lots of research that adds to the storytelling realism but also his speculation of the impact on society and culture help us to see the cost to humanity as a whole . Love his idea of ‘the future can’t speak for itself ‘ yet there is a cost , and we can calculate that cost today if we don’t act . Baczność! Dziś obejdzie się bez cytatu na początek, bo i po prawdzie, to nie bardzo jest z czego wybrać. Zapraszam was w (miejmy nadzieję) bardzo niedaleką przyszłość, w której człowiek nie tylko postawił stopę na Marsie, ale i zaczął się na nim solidnie kokosić. "Czerwony Mars" Kima Stanleya Robinsona opowiada historię setki wybrańców, mających za zadanie postawić fundamenty początku kolonizacji czwartej od Słońca planety. I wszystko byłoby fajnie, gdyby sytuacja nie zaczęła się (jak to zwykle bywa) solić, papryczkować, a nawet pieprzyć :D Wśród zdobywców Nowego Świata narasta konflikt o sprawy poważne (terraformacja, badania), jak i bardziej przyzie... przymarsjańkie? (religia, kto z kim sypia). Niestety, długie opisy kolejnych wypraw i powolny rozwój wydarzeń skutecznie zniechęciły mnie do śledzenia losów bohaterów. Choć książka została napisana na początku lat 90 XX wieku, (gdy co nieco już o warunkach marsjańskich wiedzieliśmy), to sprawia wrażenie bardzo przestarzałej. Wszystkie przedsięwzięcia, eksperymenty, stawianie kolejnych budowli, przychodzi bohaterom zbyt łatwo. "Marsjanin", pomimo koniecznych uproszczeń był pod tym względem momentami...bezwzględny. I te nieszczęsne romanse i zazdrostki. Astronauci to przecież ludzie inteligentni, potrafiący pracować w grupie, nie przywiązujący wagi do kwestii religii, czy kto z kim sypia. Chociaż, może takie było zamierzenie autora? Nawet postawienie stopy na innej planecie nie uwolni nas od ziemskich przywar. Sama jakość wydania jak najbardziej wzorowa, ale do tego już nas Vesper przyzwyczaiło. Z kolei "Fort Solis" to polsko-brytyjska gra wydana na komputery i konsole. Jack Leary, inżynier pracujący na Marsie dla korporacji górniczej, odbiera sygnał SOS z tytułowej bazy. Na miejscu okazuje się, że jej załoga nie jest już do końca kompletna, a w zakamarkach Coś się czai. Choć nie zbyt dobrze zooptymalizowana, gra wciąga fabułą nawiązującą wielokrotnie do klasyki fantastyki naukowej i horroru. In seinem Roman "Der Plan zur Rettung der Welt" schreibt @nickfullergoogins über die nahe Zukunft – in der die Menschheit die Ärmel hochgekrempelt und der Klimakrise den Kampf angesagt hat. Der arktische Eisschild ist trotzdem gefallen. Die Erde hat überall lichterloh gebrannt. Doch die Menschheit hat's, unter viel Einsatz und großen Verlusten, überstanden. Die Lebensräume neu aufgeteilt, damit sich die Natur erholen kann. Flutmauern und anderes gebaut. Man arbeitet und denkt gemeinschaftlich. Energie kommt aus Batterien, die mittels riesiger Turbinen in Hurricanes in New York aufgeladen werden. Und und und ... Deshalb ist aber noch nicht alles gut oder für immer sicher, wie eine in Grönland lebende Familie am eigenen Leib erfährt ... Für mich ist dieser Roman ("The Great Transition" im Original) der würdige Nachfolger von Paolo Bacigalupis "Biokrieg" und von Stanley Kim Robinsons "Das Ministerium für die Zukunft". DER Roman zum Thema Klimakatastrophe, den gerade alle lesen sollten. Weil er einmal mehr zeigt, dass der Kampf gegen die Klimakrise ein Generationenkonflikt ist (und bleibt), und wie unser Mindset tickt oftmals – und weil er Verzweiflung, Untergang, Hoffnung, Neuanfang immer wieder faszinierend nah zusammenbringt, verbindet. Stilistisch außerdem super interessant und gekonnt gemacht (Goggins nutzt keine "Anführungszeichen" für seine Dialoge, Erzählperspektive sind Vater und Tochter, dazu kommen Interviews für Schulaufsätze der Tochter). Zieht einen sofort rein, ist anders als alles andere derzeit, und klar, richtig wichtig. But today I wanted to share a nugget of wisdom I received from a Sci-fi writer I admire very much that I hope may help. Two years ago I reached out to #kimstanleyrobinson after a series of crises to ask him how to hold on to hope (I don’t usually do this, but I was desperate.) Here’s what he said: - Remember “never let a crisis go to waste.” Good may come from these bad events, on a rebound as people are repulsed and see the need to act more. - Go outdoors/go to the beach - Take a walk I still find his advice as relevant today as it was then. I will also add that our family has restarted our outdoor garden again after two years of being too busy to do so, and that has helped me mentally. Because we have a lot of gophers, we’re going vertical this time. I used to think of gophers as pests, but I just learned yesterday at the Natural History Museum that they are native to San Diego and play an important role in our ecosystem by aerating the soil and making it more fertile. i think you will like it… when i say the book is “hopeful,” i don’t mean that it’s an easy read. the heatwave scenes are incredibly hard to read, and it’s terrifying to think that climate change could cause millions of casualties in the Global South… especially since rich nations are the ones most responsible for the changing climate. in this way, the book teaches us important lessons about climate justice. and it’s “hopeful” in the sense that it imagines a future where we solve climate change and establish a more equitable, sustainable economic system. let me know if Bookshop works for you. this is my first time trying their online store. #ministryforthefuture #kimstanleyrobinson #climatefiction #scifi #systemchange
I wrote on solarpunk literature, the defiant eco-socialist answer to the dystopian novel, for @curaffairsmag! Just as there is a left-wing climate movement demanding humanity break from fossil fuels to create a bright future for life on Earth, so is there a parallel climate fiction that allows us to imagine that better world. Solarpunk looks towards a post-capitalist future of renewable energy. It rejects climate “doomerism” and shows what our collective future could look like if we heal our relationship with the natural world. [Reklama @wydawnictwo_vesper] Marzenia człowieka o zdobywaniu kosmosu pchają go ciągle ku eksploracji nieznanego bez względu na ryzyko. Kim Stanley Robinson w „Czerwonym Marsie”, pierwszej części Trylogii marsjańskiej, zabiera nas w fascynującą podróż, której celem jest kolonizacja tej surowej i niemalże niemożliwej do oswojenia planety. Autor już na początku opowieści pokazuje, że ludzie mogą zmienić planetę, ale sami nigdy się nie zmienią. I choć pobyt pierwszych starannie wyselekcjonowanych pionierów jest „niezapisaną czerwoną kartą”, to szybko wypełniają ją sceny zazdrości, plotki i podziały. Bo życie „na Marsie czy gdziekolwiek indziej rządzi się takimi samymi prawami", a ludzie, mimo że zostawili Ziemię daleko za sobą, przywożą swoje poglądy, problemy i ambicje. Autor ukazuje nie tylko dramat ludzkiej egzystencji skazanej na walkę o władzę, zasoby i ideologie, ale z ogromną szczegółowością kreśli jej zmagania z zabójczą naturą, którą próbuje okiełznać i zaprzęgniętą do stworzenia zdatnych do życia warunków technologią. Nie spotkałam się jeszcze z tak obrazowymi, drobiazgowymi i napisanymi ze znawstwem opisami marsjańskiego krajobrazu. Przy czytaniu rozciąga się przed nami w pełnej okazałości "piękny, ale i niezmiernie surowy: prosty, nagi, milczący, obojętny, skalisty i odwieczny... Majestatyczny." Z równym realizmem poznajemy specyfikę dostosowanych do marsjańskich warunków budowli, nowatorskich technologii i procesów zachodzących w naturze, co świadczy o niesamowitej wiedzy Autora na wiele tematów, albo wykonaną tytaniczną pracę. Podział na rozdziały ukazujące perspektywę kolejnych, odgrywających w procesie kolonizacji istotną rolę bohaterów daje nam wgląd w przypisane im zadania, ich oczekiwania i wizje. Na ponad dziewięciuset stronach Robinson zawarł opowieść wciągającą w wir emocji, rozważań i zmagań z nieznanym, której efektem jest głębsze zrozumienie zarówno ludzkiej natury, jak i tajemnic kosmosu.
