I had a nice surprise today. I was at the Visual Art Center today when my friend Martha MacDonald and a couple of her students stopped in to say hi. Then one of them told me she especially liked my nail polish series of houses and barns and she bought this piece titled “Ain’t That America” (people of a certain age will recognize the lyrics from a John Mellencamp song). The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting work from Black artists that we’ve been fortunate to showcase in our gallery spaces. Here, we shine a spotlight on Kevin Blythe Sampson. @kevinblythesampson is a multi-media artist whose work often takes a critical view of social, political, and cultural issues. A self-proclaimed “civil rights baby,” Sampson was born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ. His father was a community leader whose passionate activism and knowledge of African American history provided Sampson with a lasting legacy of inspiration. After serving as a New Jersey police officer for twenty years—eleven of them as a composite sketch artist—Sampson moved to Newark, NJ, where he has lived and worked as a professional artist since 1992. “Kevin Blythe Sampson: Black and Blue” was presented in the Art Center’s Main Gallery during the fall of 2018, and featured a selection of Sampson’s mixed media sculptures and drawings, and included a mural commissioned especially for the show. Struggling to reconcile his identity as an African American and a retired police officer, Sampson appropriated symbols from both sides of the media debate on policing and race to make a series of powerful ceramic sculptures responding to the Black and Blue Lives Matter movements. For this community-based artist who derives his motivation and inspiration from the human condition, it is clear that no matter what medium he employs, Sampson sees art as a healing mechanism. The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting work from Black artists that we’ve been fortunate to showcase in our gallery spaces. Here, we shine a spotlight on Chakaia Booker. New Jersey-born @chakaiabooker is an abstract artist known and celebrated for her monumental sculptures made of an unconventional artistic material: rubber tires. Whether composed of swooping tendrils of hanging rubber, layered sharp shards of steel belted tires or tightly tailored works that take on the shape of their underlying steel armatures, Booker's dynamic works are visually and conceptually rich in mean­ing. Building on the inherent associations of rubber to themes of industrialization, urban blight, suburban sprawl, and environmental pollution, and the physical properties of her chosen material, Booker's works dialogue with the history of abstraction, address potent socio-political and humanistic concerns, and find recycled purpose and beauty in refuse. As part of the Contemporary View Series, her work was featured in the exhibition “Cut, Weld and Build: Process in Works by Chakaia Booker.” The works presented reveal that even as Booker's production is infinitely varied in form and scale, the ways in which she makes her tough material pliable is remarkably consistent. Her creative process often begins by deconstructing the exterior, innards and supporting metal struc­tures of rubber tires, cutting its rubber components into long strips and/or smaller fragments, and then using these varied elements to build up works on a steel or wooden foundation or arma­ture. Using a host of cutting instruments, power tools, and the force of her own physical strength, her transformative process also includes deliberate and often repetitive actions such as coiling, twisting, folding, weaving, and braiding rubber components. #vacnj #blackhistorymonth

Here, we shine a spotlight on @philemona8, whose piece, "Limbs," (the first image) hung in the Art Center’s Stair-gazing space during the spring of 2016 and whose piece, "Embroidered Dream," (the second image) was included in our winter 2022 Main Gallery exhibition "Claiming the Narrative." Philemona Williamson creates narrative paintings in which she investigates adolescent experiences of all races and genders. Often these figures are portrayed with ambiguous expressions and gestures that leave the viewer questioning whether they are at play or in the midst of a struggle. The vibrant colors used in her palette reference childhood while distortions suggest more complex or even ominous interactions. Williamson is the recipient of awards from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, NYFA, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation among others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum and the Sheldon Museum of Art as well as many private collections including the Mott-Warsh Collection. #vacnj #blackhistorymonth

Here, we shine a spotlight on “Renée Stout: At the Crossroads.” (photos by @etienne_fro). For more than three decades, Washington, DC artist @reneestout5 has created multi-media work that explores the links between creativity, spirituality, and magic. Inspired by traditional African ritual objects, the cultures of the African Diaspora, current world events, and personal history, her handmade assemblages have often included images and ideas reflecting crossroads lore. This exhibition evolved from Stout’s belief that humanity is at a vital crossroads, navigating through a storm of political and religious conflict and social and economic inequality. She notes, “The crossroads is a place of chance, choices, and decision-making. Everyone has ancestors, and the way I see it, they’re all watching, waiting, and wondering if we’ll make the right choices to bring the world to a more enlightened place, so that everyone has the ability and conditions in which to grow and flourish.” #vacnj #blackhistorymonth

This August, I’m bringing #papermaking to @artcenternj! 💥CONTEMPORARY PAPERMAKING TECHNIQUES: Sunday, August 7, 2022, 10a-4p💥 Using found papers, objects, and materials, artists will create works exploring the possibilities of paper pulp. Artists will learn the basics of pulling sheets and creating collage-work in the wet-process in this introductory workshop. Techniques taught include blow outs, inclusions, double-couching, shaped deckles and pigmenting pulp. I went to wonderful gallery tour at Kean University, sponsored by the Visual Art Center of NJ. It included three galleries and my favorite was In Knots by Katie Truk who also spoke about her inspiration and process. These pieces were made during the pandemic and even though you see references to the anxiety and challenges during the last two years, the colors and patterns are so vibrant. #vacnj #keanuniversity

What’s that I see in our parking lot ... a school bus!? Forgive me for not immediately recognizing it. It’s been more than two years since we’ve had students visit the Art Center for a museum education tour, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them back! Today’s visitors were a group of special needs students from West Orange High School, who toured the current exhibitions, then made an art project in clay led by art therapist Megan Tuttle. Not a bad way to close the week, if we do say so ourselves. #vacnj #vacnjprograms

FREE and open to the public! Light refreshments will be served. 🍷 Currently on view in VACNJ’s Marité and Joe Robinson Strolling Gallery, the exhibition is made up of portraits of 25 Black women and features quotations from, and brief biographies of, each sitter. Beginning in June 2020, @parvathi_kumar_photography interviewed and photographed 25 Black women in the NJ area to showcase their collective courage and resilience. Responding to the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as the global COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey-based photographer, wanted to document and share the vast goodness she observed in this group of women—goodness that prevailed over the pain people were feeling. Through networking and research, Kumar identified women leading ordinary, everyday lives, who were also exceptional in their own ways. Ranging in age from 19 to 86, they represent a broad array of professions and experiences, including author, educator, entrepreneur, activist, CEO, doctor, disability advocate, attorney, environmentalist, and student. Acknowledging the individual challenges they face, Kumar also observed a common thread binding the group together—selflessness and commitment to service that makes them the backbones of their families, communities, and this country. This June, I’m bringing #papermaking to @artcenternj! 💥CONTEMPORARY PAPERMAKING TECHNIQUES: Sunday, June 5, 2022, 10a-4p💥 Using found papers, objects, and materials, artists will create works exploring the possibilities of paper pulp. Artists will learn the basics of pulling sheets and creating collage-work in the wet-process in this introductory workshop. Techniques taught include blow outs, inclusions, double-couching, shaped deckles and pigmenting pulp. Artists are encouraged to bring papers, objects and materials that have minimal dimension and can be added to their work collages for a more personalized touch.
