The Shopkeeper’s Quarters | a case study by 1924us Shopkeepers Quarters (@shopkeepersmaldon) is a Vacation Home Rental situated in Maldon, Victoria, known as “Australia’s First Notable Town” due to its unique historical and architectural provenance, particularly its gold town buildings. What was once the ledger of a shop in an old goldfields town, is now a hideaway for romantic hearts + creative souls. With the intention of being set up as an inhabitable installation, the property attracts quite a few artists of note, interior designers, vintage freaks, writers and craftspeople. It’s about being more than just another retreat, but a home filled with inspiration for anyone who passes through its doors. They needed people to look at the branding and translate the sense that’s there’s more here than meets the eye, a story to be told and shared, this was our duty. It had to ground a distinctive, real and noticeable presence and reflect the soul that coursed through the property – notions of curiosity, intrigue and desire. “the handmade, unique/not mass-produced, nor mass-producible, a process that takes time and reflection” Our heritage approach to branding was a natural fit for the project, and we focused on traditional gold-rush shopfronts, adorned with a menagerie of lettering and advertising, to leave our own “mark of the maker”. #1924us #branding #design #art #cool #inspiration #typography #lettering #beautiful

Family is an incredible blessing, and a great responsibility. Not great in terms of size, though it is, but great in terms of rewarding. I think this world, mostly the West I mean, struggles with the idea of “giving up” yourself to something “greater”, because this world has taught us the greatest thing is ourselves. Our politics, our ideas, our religions, these are seen as more important than the sanctity of human life, or compassion, or leadership and stewardship. It’s okay to be a part of something greater, in fact, it’s amazing! Having two kids under 2 with no babysitters, no daycare, no preschool, always at home, hahaha it can seem to many like it immediately means you’ll never have time for yourself. But counter to that, I’ve done more work than ever, Elle and I have travelled to many parts of the world in that time, we’ve worked to make that happen. Neither of us come from money. There’s no big bag in the bank. We, like many others, live paycheck to paycheck. My hope with sharing this, is to be hopefully a small match of inspiration in a world so disinterested in continuing. We’re so thankful for the people we have in our lives who equally inspire us! Since having the kids, we‘ve unlocked a whole new level in our life, and it’s meant everything to us. Salt Church | a case study by 1924us It’s a never-ending honor for us to work with like-minded people, perhaps more importantly: like-hearted. Sharing in the vastness that is Christ’s love, is a great call to community. In today’s society, everything can feel isolating, church should be a place for everyone to come and lay down their hearts. That’s what Salt Church wants to provide for people, and we wanted to help them to do it. Seven Keys Lodge | a case study by @1924us This beautiful piece of revered history formerly known as Baldpate Inn rebranded to the Seven Keys Lodge a couple years back! And we had the deep honor of taking on that task for the beautiful family that now runs it. A piece of Estes Park Colorado since 1917, this massive wooden lodge is without doubt one of the coziest places nestled in the mountains and woods. Our job, was to bring that era from before, into today, with a love for nature, for its originality, and with the hope that moving forward the place would forever be a warm memory in the hearts of those who visit Her. With a full system, and even a working typeface, we had much to work with, and much to do. The job was fun for our studio, but more importantly, it’s one of those projects that deeply, deeply matters to us, because it helps us to protect, and to present the past in a way that allows it to live on. The Kinlands | case study by @1924us Nestled deeply in one of the most visually provoking landscapes, the Kinlands offers an incredibly unique and highly curated shooing experience. Books, pastries, gifts and a wide array of a multitude of other things, it is one of the most charming places to shop for whatever you need. When they came to us for branding, their hope was to get a system that allowed them to execute this feeling, so our hope was to create something classical and rustic. Their tagline “the language of life” an ode to community shared through our longing for it, that we can all speak together on some level no matter our differences or backgrounds. A pretty beautiful and sweeping thought. The hardest part was crafting a workable, dual-case font that they could use on products. Of course not everything here ended up becoming their branding, but several elements made the cut! We showcase these systems to show the iterative process, the back-and-forth, we go through in order to reach a settled idea. Globe Runner | a case study by 1924us Built for the adventure, to go the distance, to triumph the body: Globe Runner set out to make, source curate and provide the best possible goods for travellers of all kinds, but the catch was to do it with sustainability in mind, not just over produce stuff, but to make it intentionally and for a purpose. Our work focused on the organic side of it, how we could create this sort of movement to invoke the travelling spirit, while at the same time build out an organic feel that also felt reputable. This is a system 1 pitch and costs 5k to make. After several rounds of iteration, a logo, an icon and an illustration are chosen, these assets help a brand take off. System 1’s are our most common project. We are deeply proud, and honoured to be transparent about our costs, and pricing. Velour Vintage | a case study by 1924us A little while ago we had the great honor of branding @shopvelour, we had the great fun of teaming up with @joshuaminnich as well to create some of the assets pitched! Velour is a one of a kind curated retail shopping experience, specialising in vintage, handmade, and heritage clothing and decor! The shop, ran by a tight knit group of hard working curators, the shop is constantly abuzz with keeping the old alive. From old denim to candles, they sell a wide array of things and our design work wanted to focus on the multitude of things they sell, a bit pieced together, a look that makes you think twice and wonder how it all comes together - but that’s what curation is! It’s a collaboration of makers from years ago with stylistic visions of today! We used a lot of antique imagery as references, old French projectors, old dynamite boxes, and we came up with this selection of designs for the brand to use! Two Trees Church | a brand case study by 1924us I grew up hating church, I just always felt out of place. I didn’t mind seeing my friends or even being away from my house, but it just always felt like work. Fast forward two decades and I’m blessed with an unmatched honor to help brand them. I know many of you here aren’t religious, that’s okay! I understand it, really I do. I was saved at 14 and again at 25 and it’s changed my life for the better. But it’s not for everyone (though I do believe it’s for everyone if ya feel me!) I loveeee working with groups like @twotreeschurch, simply because of their heart for God being so transparent. So much these days church has become about a show, fog machines and lights and it feels like it’s lost the heart of what it means to be a Christian. It’s easy to point out all the flaws in a broken home, but not easy to point out all the amazing work being done in spite of that. Based out of Ventura, CA, Two Trees has a hope and dedicated effort to making Christ a home for everyone. In Scripture we’re taught that “no man can come to the Father except through Him” good works and faith alone are not enough. So we attempted to capture this minimally using subtle typography, simpler symbolism and approachable layouts that reflected the area. Designing for churches is a special cause in my heart. I could go on for hours about it, but really I am so deeply humbled to be afforded such opportunities. We hope that, as a business, by lifting others whose mission it is to lift others up, we can create a cycle of perpetual progress into health and good standing in life and community. These last few months have provoked a great many thing in my life. The peace I feel as a father and husband is unparalleled in necessity, and is one of the greatest gifts we take for granted too often, or too little prioritise. I don’t make much money. I’ve been honest about that. Though in history, if I can boast, few artists ever did. Ever since releasing my financial transparency reel, something that was like a 1 minute, edited and truncated, I’ve received countless messages about how to “up my hustle” “up my game”, etc. Thing is, I’m home most everyday. I get to see my children grow, see them take their steps, hear their words, laugh, cry, imagine, play, wrestle with them. I’ve read too many books from people on the brink of death who say that working in their youth lead to bitterness in their old age. The regret for not experiencing life’s most precious moments, out of some sense of need to accomplish for the greatness of self, came at a cost no money could purchase - time. No I’m not a rich man financially, but spiritually and in the sanctity of my home, I am beyond wealthy. We’ve been taught that the measure of a man is how much he has, not how much he gives. A backwards notion. But really, neither of these things truly define us. So why am I saying all this? As we’ve moved to Tasmania, things have picked up majorly for me in my design work. I’ve now booked more clients in 3 months than all of last year combined. It means I’m working a bit harder, still doing so from the comfort of my home. We left Queensland because we needed the change, it was costly, and a risk, but one that has no doubt paid off in more ways than one - seeing peace in my household is something no client can pay for, no amount I make purchases that. It’s stoked and cultivated. It’s okay to take risks, to fail in some areas to succeed and excel in others. Life is far too great to spend wasting away in a comfortable discomfort.
