She didn't seem all that impressed and quickly asked for a different type of postcard. Why? Perhaps her own family’s military history was hard to top. Her husband, John Hezzie Patrick, served in WWI. Her grandfather Leslie Peacock Riley (She was born Elizabeth Riley) was commissioned captain of Co. B First regiment, Ohio militia during the Civil War. His brother, Joseph Fletcher Riley, served in the Civil War and died in battle in 1863. Their other brother, Sameul Riley fought in the Civil War, and his son Captain Victor Riley, served in WWI. Elizabeth's Great Great Grandmother was Meriban Springer Peacock Riley And Meriban’s great grandfather? He was Adonijah Peacock Sr. He owned a powder mill that made gun powder for General George Washington's army during the revolutionary war. An explosion in the mill killed him. No wonder Elizabeth was not impressed. (The Michigan Veterans’ Facility, formerly the Michigan Soldiers’ Home, was dedicated in December 1886 as a home for disabled Michigan veterans of the Civil War. 📓 <엄마의 36년> 오래전부터 마음속에 간직하고 있는 책 기획이 하나 있다. 바로 엄마에 관한 책이다. 약 5년 전 멀리 소풍을 떠나버린 우리 엄마에 관한 이야기를 쓰고자 한다. 엄마는 아주 오래전부터 가계부 겸 짧은 일기를 써오셨었다. 검은색 인조가죽 커버에 금색이나 은색으로 그 해의 연도가 형압 처리되어 있는 옛날식 노트를 쓰시거나 작은 손 노트 같은 것들에 기록을 해오셨다. 엄마가 기록을 꾸준히 해오고 계시다는 걸 안 것은 고등학생 때쯤이었던 것 같다. 안방 화장대에는 이런 기록 노트가 항상 펼쳐져 있는 고정석이 있었는데 오며 가며 흘끔흘끔 엄마가 뭘 하셨나 훔쳐보곤 했다. 그 안에는 그날 그날 무엇에 지출을 했는지, 어떤 이벤트가 있었는지, 엄마가 무슨 생각을 했는지가 짧게는 한두 줄, 길게는 서너 줄 정도로 적혀 있었다. 일기라고 하기엔 너무나 짧았지만 이 정도 분량이기에 그 긴 세월을 꾸준히 기록하실 수 있었겠구나 싶다. 놀랍게도 엄마의 기록 노트는 1983년도부터 돌아가시기 몇 달 전인 2019년도까지가 상자에 고스란히 남아있다. 엄마의 역사가 담긴 이 상자를 나는 유품으로 간직하고 있는 중이다. 엄마의 이 기록들은 우리 집안의 산 역사 그 자체이다. 결혼해 시집으로 들어와 시어머니와 남편 외에 결혼 안 한 시누이와 시동생까지 건사하며 꾸려 낸 가계부가 소상히 기록되어 있다. 많지 않은 소득에 치열하게 살아온 엄마의 씀씀이를 보면 경외감과 안쓰러움이 물밀듯 밀려온다. 몇 십 원 짜리 아이스크림, 고등어 한손 가격뿐 아니라 그 와중에 소소하게 하신 투자 내역까지…… 엄마의 절약 정신과 투자 정신이 노트 안에 찬란히 빛나고 있다. 엄마는 시니컬하면서도 위트 있는 사람이었다. 노트에 가계부 외에 누구를 만나고 무슨 경조사를 다녀왔고 나와 동생에게 있던 이벤트 등등을 써 놓으셨는데 그 표현이 딱히 다정하지는 않으셨다. 하지만 툭툭 스치듯 묻혀놓은 그날의 감상을 읽다 보면 입꼬리가 씰룩하게 돼 곤 한다. ‘우리 엄마가 이런 생각도 했네?’ 하면서. 엄마는 갑상선암에서 벗어나 저 하늘에서 자유롭게 잘 지내고 계시리라 믿는다. 그렇지만 고작 36년밖에 같이 보내지 못한 딸의 입장에서 엄마의 삶이 너무 아깝고 안타깝다. 너무 착하고 성실하셨어서, 애초에 약하게 태어난 데다 보살핌을 많이 받지 못하셨어서 이 세상에 좀 더 자취를 남기지 못하신 이 아쉬움을 내가 책이라는 형태로 풀어드리고 싶다. 그러한 이유로 엉성한 글 실력을 업그레이드해보고 싶어 글쓰기 미션에 참여하고 있기도 하다. 언제가 될지는 모르겠지만 엄마의 삶을 재조명해 드릴 수 있는 책을 꼭 세상에 선보이리라 다짐한다. - 오늘따라 엄마가 많이 그리운 마흔살 딸 씀 🤍
