Is this the biggest molehill in Aberdeenshire? A few miles to the south of Fraserburgh is this colossal mound measuring 25 metres across and nearly 5m high (80 feet by 16 feet), which would mean one very big mole... This is Memsie Cairn, and the remarkable thing is that it used to be one of several in the area. In 1723 it was recorded that there were three such cairns here, each the same size. As ever, the question is, why? Well, the people who built the cairns did so around 4,000 years ago, and as is typical with cairns, they were used as burial mounds. As to why they were so huge; the low ridge of Cairn Muir is made up of glacial gravel and was a relatively dry site for burials in a wider landscape that was poorly drained. Over time, the mounds were gradually depleted of their stone for other uses. Roads, field walls; even Fraserburgh harbour were built from the rubble of these cairns. The situation grew so drastic, in 1930 the Office of Works bought the remaining cairn for £30 in order to preserve it, with the others having been completely removed. It's hard to know what has been lost, aside from the stones. Reported finds in the cairns have included human bones, flint 'dart-heads' an iron sword, and another from the Bronze Age. This curious mixture of finds suggests the Memsie Cairns were in use for millennia – from the 2000s BC up into the medieval period – as a place for burial, for hundreds of generations. If you’ve visited the bookshop recently you may have noticed the changing display on the top of our back table. We’ve been using this space to spotlight different independent publishers each month! I took another photo of the Jacobite steam train at the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands, this time as it returned to its home station in Fort William. Visiting the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands and capturing it with the famous Jacobite steam train, known from the Harry Potter movies, was an incredible experience.
